Chatting With Yvette Nicole Brown

Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with Yvette Nicole Brown about her upcoming projects, her past projects, and I got to know a lot more about Yvette herself.

You may have seen her on TV, whether on Drake & Josh or in one of the many commercials she can be seen in. You can see her this July in the film, The Ugly Truth. You can also get to know much more about her below!

So what are your upcoming projects?
I have a movie coming out starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler in July called, The Ugly Truth. I also have a movie coming out called, Repossession Mambo with Jude Law & Forest Whitaker.

What was your first commercial?
My very first commercial was 1-800-CALL-ATT with D.L. Hughley but my first commercial that I think people took notice of was probably Big Lots.

What has been your favorite commercial to film?
I worked with the director, Baker Smith a few times. Any commercial with him is pretty much my favorite because he is such a fun director. I’ve done a Dairy Queen commercial with him and a Time Warner commercial with him.

Having singing experience, are there any plans of releasing a solo album in the future?
You know what, not really. Music is something that I do now just for myself or in church. I don’t have any plans to head in that direction but you never know which way the Lord is going to lead you in.

As a Christian in the industry, do you find it easier or harder living in LA?

Living in LA is probably hard whether you are a Christian or not but I do find navigating the business much easier. Being a Christian, it makes my decision process really easy. I already have a clear cut idea of who I am and what I will or will not do so it makes saying no really easy.

Who are some of your favorite Christian musical artists?
I love Group 1 Crew right now. They have this song, “Living the Life” that is my anthem. I love Natalie Grant, Virtue, Mary Mary, and Nicole Nordeman is also a favorite of mine. Every time a new album of hers comes out, I am pretty much the first in line to get in.

You have a lot of quotes and bible verses on your blog so what is your favorite verse from the bible?
Jeremiah 29:11 is my absolute favorite verse. A lot of times when life gets rough you may forget that God has a plan. So when things get crazy, if you just wait it out, eventually God’s plans will manifest that will lead you to your plan.

So you grew up in church?
Yes, I did. Actually, my Aunt and Uncle are Pastors so I used to go to their church when I was younger. When I got older, I went to a church that was near where I lived.

So how often do you visit Ohio?
You know what, I was going every holiday season and then I remembered that I hate snow. Now it is about once every other year. I am going back this August so I am really excited.

What were you involved in during high school and junior high?
We did a play called “Cindy Ella” which is a rip on “Cinderella” and I played the evil stepmother. I wasn’t really a sports girl but I was a high stepper (like a cheerleader for the band). I was in the choir and in the drama club.

Now what are you currently reading?
I don’t think I am reading anything right now that doesn’t have to do with acting or taxes.

Would you rather go back to the 80s or the 90s?
Whoa. That’s a good question! I would rather go back to the 80’s. The 80’s had The Cosby Show and really, really good music. I love the retro idea of going back to the 80’s. Just the idea of going back to the 80’s makes me smile.

What are your favorite things to do in LA?
I love going to the movies and going to dinner with friends but I am really a homebody. Watching a Netflix movie or something on Tivo is really fun right about now. It’s a pretty simple life.

What are your favorite movies and television shows?
I love comedies and anything that Sandra Bullock is in. I would love to play her best friend or something in a movie. I am hoping one day our paths will cross and I will get to work with her. With television, I watch everything from America’s Next Top Model and American Idol to Friday Night Lights, The Game, 24, etc…

Is there a recent quote you found that you would like to share?

James Gunn – “Treasure the one who is thinking of you when all others are thinking of themselves.” In a place like LA I think that quote is magical. It works for every area of your life.

What has been your favorite filming location?
I love lots. Anytime that I can be on a studio lot, I am overjoyed. My favorite lot in LA is Warner Brothers. It is the most “Hollywood.” When I thought about a studio lot when I was a kid, Warner Bros is exactly what I envisioned.

What was it like getting back together with the cast of Drake & Josh for the Christmas movie?
It was like coming home. That is my family. That was one of the first jobs that I had when I came to LA and one of the longest jobs that I have had as an actor. I have seen the kids grow up, I am friends with most of the people that are guest stars on the show so it was such a beautiful experience. We all get along and really love each other. It really was the most wonderful experience. I hope that Dan Schneider continues to write, Drake & Josh Go To Prom, Drake & Josh Buy A House, etc… I will do a Drake & Josh movie or series until the day I die.
