There is an indie singer/songwriter Nick Mery aka Merykid, that I think many will find to be an interesting listen. He has a very unique sound, as you can hear on his Myspace. He mixes pop, folk, and experimental music and it is definitely nothing I have ever heard before. There is no shortage in self creativity as he is self-taught in the following instruments: acoustic guitar, bass, drums, bouzouki, harmonica, trumpet, banjo, synthesizer, and numerous percussion instruments.
Merykid's sophomore EP Boy & The Bird is due to release on June 30, 2009. He says of his new project, “The album was written at a time when I had a lot more questions than I did answers.” Two of Merykid's favorite albums are Ryan Adam’s Love Is Hell and Radiohead’s In Rainbows, so the new EP may have some familiar sounds. On the EP, I enjoy the song, Keep Movin the most since it is inspirational and I know that I can listen to it no matter what mood I am in. The songs, Bad Things and Goodbye Moon are written so well. No, these songs are not inspirational but they definitely make you think. I like music that makes me think. I also really liked, If She Only Knew which is about a good relationship gone wrong but as you can tell from the title, there is more to it. Everyone can take something from that song based on various experiences in relationships.
Now over the years, Merykid has performed with Blue October, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and Katharine McPhee among others. Who knows who he will be playing with in the future...but based on who he has performed with in the past, I can only imagine nothing but the best.
