With Fame hitting movie theaters nationwide on September 25, 2009 it is only natural for there to be a soundtrack release. Although this soundtrack did not have many similar elements to the original movie musical as this Fame has found its own sound. It defines fame for the 21st century. In replace of 80's pop, you will hear r&b and hip hop from today's generation. There are far more new additions to the soundtrack than songs from the 1980's film which might disappoint some, but may thrill others. There are phenomenal vocal performance by Naturi Naughton and newcomer, Asher Book. Naturi kills with her rendition of "Out Here on My Own" giving some steep competition between her and Irene Cara. Asher gives a stellar cover of John Legend's "Ordinary People" however his track, "Someone to Watch Over Me" seems more like a fan favorite. Santigold's "You'll Find A Way (Switch & Sinden Remix)" is gold...as is Sam Sparro's "Black & Gold." Needless to say...the song selection for the new tracks seem very fitting. Although the new rendition of "I Put A Spell On You" is painful to listen to and "Too Many Women" is simply mediocre. The songwriting is on point though. In fact, the songwriting for all of the new tracks are very well crafted, inspirational, and relatable. "Get On The Floor" will definitely be a fan favorite, that's for sure. Megan Mullally's take on Rodgers & Hart's "You Took Advantage of Me" is the only true show tune on the soundtrack which is quite disappointing. Overall, Fame is what you want to hear if you want to hear different infusions of today's generation of music but because of that, this soundtrack is not timeless. Every song cannot be listened to and enjoyed the way they are today, years from now. That's the only downfall. One thing is for sure, when you listen to Fame, you won't be able to stop dancing! It will be incredibly interesting to see how the new tracks fit into the film...maybe then I will change my mind about some of the tracks. Only time will tell. Overall, Fame is worth the buy.
Fame Soundtrack is in stores now.
