The writing was incredible. Adam Glass and David Hollander wrote this episode. In this episode, William's dad, Ben (Raymond J. Barry) has William help his best friend who is an alcoholic. It becomes a bit of a domino effect since William's plans for relaxing down time with his father come crashing down when Ben's best friend introduces William to another alcoholic. He is so far gone that he abuses his own son. Michael Beach did a fantastic job playing an abusive alcoholic...his portrayal was very disturbing. Guest star, Tyler James Williams plays the son and his performance was incredible as well. Personally, these two cases in one episode was a lot to handle. There are so many strong emotions...at moments I felt uncomfortable, as I believe those in similar real life situations must feel when they are trying to help their loved ones recover. This is definitely a powerful episode and could possibly be setting the tone for the rest of the season. If you thought Season 1 was good, you haven't seen anything yet.

An all new episode of The Cleaner airs tonight on A&E at 10/9c and below is an early mini review of tonight's episode, "Last American Casualty."

Loni Love
Last week, numerous comedians regularly featured on Chelsea Lately (E!) performed their own show at Club Nokia in Downtown LA. One of those comedians was Loni Love and I was thrilled to be able to speak with her the day before the big night.

When did you first meet Chelsea Handler and how did you get involved in Chelsea Lately?
I met Chelsea when she was on the show, Girls Behaving Badly. I was on a couple of episodes for that show. Then, when Chelsea Lately came about there were auditions for the panel guests. I went to the audition and that's how I got on the show.
What shows would you like to create skits out of on Chelsea Lately?
(laughs) Oh gosh. We did The Facts of Life and that was really funny! I would love to do the older shows like Diff'rent Strokes, The Cosby Show, Friends...there is so much out there that we haven't even touched so it is only a matter of time.
Which round table panelist on Chelsea Lately have you connected to the most and hang out with the most when you are not working?
I would say all of them, it just depends on where we are. Most of the time we hang out when Chelsea is performing. We have all been so busy though, it is pretty crazy right now.
Are there any celebrities that you make sure you defend on the show?
We do defend some people, it just depends on the topic. Many times we are praising different people. That is why Chelsea has 3 comics because everyone doesn't have to take the same point of view, you know?
What do you do about writer’s block?
If I have a really good performance I can usually snap back into things but if I am having writer's block it usually means that I am working too hard and thinking too hard about things. So I'll just go and relax, take a walk, and come back to the writing a few days later.
When doing stand up comedy is there anything that you wouldn’t talk about?
Sometimes you have to give a certain topic time if something has happened. I try to be aware of certain issues depending on where I am. I am an entertainer but I also respect my audience.
What advice do you have for women who want to be in stand up?
It is a very demanding occupation. I would suggest that you start at an open mic and develop your act. Practice your craft as much as you can, try to get into comedy festivals and once you develop your act, try to get representation.
You have appeared on VH1’s I Love the 70’s/80’s/90’s but which decade would you go back to?
I like talking about the 80's...Michael Jackson rocked the 80's. I liked researching the 70s the most. There was an energy and style that I haven't seen from way back. The music and fashion were great. People seemed to be a lot more free.
What was it like being a correspondent for the CNN show D.L. Hughley Breaks the News and covering the inauguration of President Barak Obama?
That was one of the most fantastic experiences og my life. I found out the difference between a news network and an entertainment network. When I went there and got my assignment, everyone was excited because they thought it was a comedy piece. There was this positive energy that I can't even explain. Everyone was friendly and happy. It was so historic so I was really blessed that I was able to o. That is the thing about stand up, you never know where it will take you. People asked why I left my job as an engineer and I left because I wanted to do something different, entertain people, and work for myself. I am meeting people that I grew up watching on TV. I can say that I met Ed Mcmahon. I have been on shows that I grew up watching, like Hollywood Squares. Being able to go to the inauguration is just another example...because of getting into comedy I was able to be a correspondent.
What are you currently working on now?
I am working on an hour special for Comedy Central. I also have a show, Wildest TV Show Moments (E!) that I host every week. I also have a show on truTV, Smoking Guns Presents. I am a regular on Chelsea Lately and I tour my stand up. Check Myspace for tour dates.

Have You Heard of Sugarwall?

I was introduced to Sugarwall a few weeks ago and I just want to put this out there for anyone who might be interested in this band. This band consists of 4 multi-talented guys from across the US and their record “Find A Way” just released on June 23, 2009.
I would describe their sound as rock with a bit of country. Describing each song on the new album...The vocals on "Find A Way" are great and the song seems like it could be a great single. I understand why it is the first song on the album, it definitely feels like an opener. "Nothing" is a track that could also be a great single. It's one of those songs where you feel the emotion behind the song in the band's voices and instruments. Great stuff. "Missed You" speaks for itself although the lyrics are relatable and catchy so this could easily be a fan favorite. I like the lyrics and instruments in "Goodbye." Even though the song is titled "Goodbye" it is inspirational and about moving on, so I like that. "Forever Now" has a pop edge to it in a sense, as it seems very commercial. That could be good or bad. "Video Star" has a very country feel to it and it is fun to listen to if you like that. "For Your Love" sounds like a song I would hear at a wedding. I'll leave it at that. My least favorite song would have to be "Better Days" because of the overuse of vibrato. I would love to hear a female country artist sing this song instead. The lyrics of this song are great though! "Like Yesterday" is one of my favorite tracks because everything comes together so well. This is one of those songs you put on repeat all day and never get tired of.
I like rock and I like country but there is just not enough sugar in the band and too much vibrato in the songs to make me want to put this music on my iPod. The lyrics are very strong which I like. Although overall, I have a feeling this band is better performing live as opposed to listening to their recorded and edited tracks.
Take a listen for yourself and decide if you are a fan of Sugarwall.

Review: Samantha Who? - The Rock Star
*Reviews May Contain Spoilers*

Andrea: Dude, you sleep on a couch and your ex is dating Tommy Wilder. I think you've got bigger problems than crumbs.
It is so good to be reviewing Samantha Who? again, even if it is only for the last remaining episodes of the season. This show definitely was canceled before its time but I am going to enjoy these last few episodes instead of being sad about the end. So getting to the episode... I enjoyed the introduction. I could not stop laughing when Dena hugged Sam twice after Sam told her who that met the night before. Dena is hilarious in everything that she does and in everything that she says. Once Sam and Dena went to Sam's parent's house...Howard came in talking about something completely different than what the girls were talking about and that was very funny. In my opinion, the character of Howard has gotten the least amount of comedic lines in this season and in the first season. Anyway, it was quite entertaining to see Dena and Andrea acting like fan girls...especially since that is probably the only time we will see the two in that element. Todd was quite funny too, putting out accusations that rock star, Tommy stole his sunglasses and tried on his shoes. What was somewhat amusing but also a bit worrying was when Sam had a flashback of when she was younger and attended a concert of Tommy's. I was hoping that this would not create problems for her relationship with Tommy. That storyline could have gone on for more than one episode but it was nice while it lasted. Overall, this was a great episode. It is unclear to me how many episodes were filmed for Season 2 and how many of those will air...so I am very anxious to see what the last episode of this show will be. Time will tell.

Big Brother 11 in 2 Weeks
In 2 weeks, Big Brother 11 begins and Hollywood the Write Way will be invaded by tons of Big Brother related posts. As Big Brother comes on 3x a week, there will be at least 3 Big Brother related posts every week starting Thursday, July 9, 2009 - September 2009.
This year there will be no House Calls but there will still be Big Brother After Dark which I will blog about. As Big Brother After Dark airs live 7 days a week, 12am-3am EST, there is no telling how much blogging I will be doing based off of this alone. I have never gotten the live feed and this year will be no different.
I am so excited for the HoH competitions, nomination ceremonies, PoV competitions, live evictions, and drama to begin!
There are some rumors about this season and I cannot wait to find out if any of the rumors are true or not. What rumors? Here is a list...
*House guests enter the house on July 5th.
*House guests will have money which they can spend on luxury goods for example, slop passes or they can save the money and cash it in at the end of the game.
*There is a High School cliques theme.
*House guests are not guaranteed $500K in the end & will have to earn the money.
*The prize money will be less than 1/2 million based on how house guests do in.
*House guests will have to live without basic amenities in order to build up prize money.
Tune in to CBS in 2 Weeks!!!

With every success and failure, William wrestles with his commitment to his work and his love for his wife Melissa (Price-Francis) and their children through an unusual relationship with God.
Season 2 of the hit A&E original scripted drama series The Cleaner, starring Benjamin Bratt, Grace Park, Amy Price-Francis and Esteban Powell airs Tuesdays at 10PM ET/PT on A&E.

The Cleaner: Hello America Review
Season 2 of The Cleaner premieres tonight on A&E at 10pm EST and below is my early review of tonight's episode, "Hello America."
You can watch the first 10 minutes of the premiere here.

A&E - William’s (Benjamin Bratt) former sponsor Pauline Kmec (Whoopi Goldberg) resurfaces when he is called to help an addict she currently sponsors. Davis (Gary Cole), a former friend and fellow program member, is a high-profile national news anchor and a spokesperson for recovery, but is struggling with his sobriety in the face of his wife’s (Jayne Brook) battle with cancer. William juggles the case while moving back in with his wife Melissa (Amy Price-Francis) to create a façade of happiness while her parents (Mariette Hartley and Barry Newman) are in town.
The introduction was very attention grabbing. This introduction foreshadows what is to come in the middle of the episode and is just as attention grabbing once that time comes. What I found the most interesting was the length an addict would go to in order to sneak his habit right in the public eye or even get his/her last fix before getting clean. Guest star, Gary Cole's character Davis truly was heartbreaking to see. So it was good to see the crew again, helping Davis get clean. The chemistry between Benjamin Bratt and Guest Star, Whoopi Goldberg was perfect. I would love to see her role on this show expand, however she has The View to attend to on the East Coast. Let's just hope that the door is open for her to appear again. Overall, I enjoyed this episode and it is worth the watch. It was more of a somber introduction to a season as opposed to a lighthearted (is that even possible for this show?) and adventurous season premiere that I am used to with the majority of the TV shows that I watch.
The Cleaner is inspired by the life of Warren Boy and as a result of this inspiration, it is a very dark show...positive intentions but dark. This is not cookie cutter entertainment. That's not what an addict, their families, and friends go through when an addict needs to get clean. I applaud the writers for portraying this show in a genuine light and not creating the show solely for ratings, etc... This is the real deal. So if you can handle that, definitely tune in every Tuesday at 10/9c.

Model Talk: Monica Olsen
Have you ever wanted to to talk to a model and ask them all of your burning questions about the modeling world and its effect on the real world? I was able to do so recently! Monica Olsen began modeling at the age of 14 and soon found herself relocating from Canada to NYC. Monica has since been featured on countless magazine covers including Elle and Cosmopolitan, various commercials, ad campaigns, etc... Today, Monica resides in Los Angeles, CA with her rocker husband and has her own skin care product line, Skin by Monica. I learned a lot about her line too. It's all below!

You entered the modeling world at the early age of 14, but did you ever consider going into modeling prior to?
Well, I had people at school and family friends tell me that I was really tall and I should be a model but I never really considered it. I had a really laid back life and it didn't occur to me to model until my neighbor who was a photographer started taking pictures of me and submitted me to an agency. I was busy doing sports and everything before.
Have you noticed at all if over the years that modeling agencies have changed their standards and requirements weight wise?
I came along when Kate Moss was really popular so for me it was very hard. NY was harsher from where I grew up. Kudos to Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, and the women who have curves that believe that this is how they are and this is how it should be. When I was in NY, it was probably one of the toughest time as far as weight goes. Curves were not in. I am glad that it is slowly coming back though. I encourage the media to reinforce that a real woman has a shape to her.
What did you notice early on and even now about models' self esteem?
That's the part that I didn't really get...the constant being preoccupied of your weight and what you eat. I was pretty lucky because I have a good metabolism. I never starved myself but I knew people who had battled with anorexia. I was very grounded though. There is a very shallow aspect to the industry but I try to do my best and always stay healthy. We all of our insecurities but I am so glad that my parents put their foot down. Nothing is worth your health and happiness.
Was your self esteem really effected when you got into modeling?
I would be lying if I said no. When I went to NY and was told that my chest was too big for what was acceptable, it kind of put me back. At times, I would be told that I should be a size zero. That irked me a bit. All throughout though I try to keep a level head. I just think, this is me and I am lucky to be here and I just want to do my best and move on.
So what do you have to say to the girls who try to look like models?
All of these magazines have the best re-touchers. Don't think that is 100% realistic. They can make your lips look bigger, make you look thinner, everything. There is a lot put into these photos post production after the hair, makeup, and photos are taken. Be accepting of yourself. Look at the qualities you have and celebrate yourself.
Sex sells but how far is too far when it comes to the modeling jobs that you take?
That is a really good question. I have been in positions where I had such opportunities such as Playboy and I have never considered them. Being married and being a mom, I just want to keep that side of me private. Nudity is something that if you are comfortable with it is okay. There are certain well known photographers who have asked me to go somewhat nude and if it is classy, and you feel okay with it then go for it. Just always remember that whatever you do in life, especially nowadays with social networking sites, you will be tied to it. There are some girls doing really stupid things out there and it is coming out on the internet. Think twice because you never know where you are going to end up.
Is there anything that really sticks out about the modeling world that you wish you knew when you were 14?
Oh gosh. I think the image of the industry is all too glamorous. When I was in NY I was in a loft where there was no air conditioning and I had to walk about 30 flights of stairs. I am really thankful for the opportunity but behind the scenes it is not always glamorous. People should enter this industry with their eyes wide open. There are a lot of people that linger around and promise you the moon so you have to keep your eyes open, be focused on what you want, and never compromise who you are.
Do you have a favorite photographer that you have worked with?
One of my favorites right now is a friend of mine, Justin Monroe. I really appreciate photographers that think outside of the box and want to be creative. Photographers who go out of the boundaries I appreciate so much! I appreciate so many types of photography, it is hard to say.
Who is your favorite designer?
That varies as well. I like Marc Jacobs. I like so many different designers though.
What makes skin care products (SKIN BY MONICA) organically and environmentally pure?
I didn't want any chemicals in the line. The other thing is that there are certain natural ingredients that aren't beneficial to you because they don't belong on your skin or can be irritating. The line has ingredients that are an added benefit to your skin other than just moisture. It repairs your skin. I love Methyl Sufanol Methane (MSM) which is a mineral that helps hydrate the skin. I like to wash my face without stripping it and drying it. It is like a breath of fresh air. I got really technical and scientific with this line.
Did you always know that you wanted your line to be available for men and women of all ages?
Yes, I wanted it for the whole family. Also, I believe everyone should treat their skin as it is sensitive baby skin.
What was your favorite part about going to NY Film Academy?
My favorite part was learning the craft of acting since I had little formal training acting. Not only were we developing various techniques but we learned how to find our own techniques. There is no one good way of acting. The whole history of acting was interesting as well. The highlight was the teachers. It was really nice to work with directors as well. It is really important for actors to know what it is like to work with directors since you will be working with them. NY Film Academy did a great thing bringing the two together when filming on the lot and coaching us.
Can you tell me about the documentary that is currently in pre-production in South Africa?
That documentary is taking place in Johannesburg. This was brought to me because they needed a female reporter. Because it is so dangerous and I was sick, I was never able to go down there. I think the world really needs to know what is going on there. It will definitely be an eye opener for everyone.
What has been your favorite country to travel to?
I love parts of China. I really enjoy Hong Kong. I like the culture and food. Argentina is so very European but with a South American flare. I love Portugal. I love it all. I have an appetite for travel and new cultures.
How many languages can you speak?
My husband says I speak 7 but I think I speak 5 fluently. I speak Russian, Hungarian, Polish, French, Spanish, Italian, and English. I went to a French school for 12 years. I am working on my Italian. I'm a linguistic. I grew up learning many different languages. My parents speak so many different languages and every time they didn't want my sister and I to know what they were saying, they would talk in German or any other language we did not understand.
When did you get into pilates and yoga?
I got into yoga when I lived in NY and had a stressful lifestyle. I went to a yoga studio downtown. I seriously got into it when I was 21/22 years old. The benefits are tremendous. Pilates was recommended to me because I am tall and I had back issues. I incorporated pilates into my workout about 2 years ago.
What do you have going on right now?
I have a project that will be announced at San Diego Comic Con. It was something that fell into my lap. I love science fiction. I love escapism. I have been to Comic Con before and I watch the Saturn Awards, etc... I really try to do things that I am interested in so I am really going after what I love.

Talking Next to Normal with Adam Chanler-Berat
I was thrilled to finally see Next to Normal the musical, winner of 3 Tony Awards this year. After listening to the original album recording since its release too many times to count, it was fantastic to finally see what I had been listening to come to life. Best of all, I interviewed Next to Normal Actor, Adam Chanler-Berat shortly after the matinee performance. He also recorded a welcome video for Hollywood the Write Way, which you can see below. Enjoy!
So tell me about the Tony Awards!
The whole night was amazing. Second Stage threw us a pre-party. The whole night we were treated like movie stars. It was really exciting and beautiful for the show to be honored in that way. As far as the ceremony goes...you know what was so exciting about it? We were this small show that started off, then went to a regional house, then came back, and we were a huge part of this national celebration of theatre. That was the most exciting thing about the evening. On the other side, I was gripping my chair practically the whole night because the anticipation is just awful. We came out well and I think it did a lot for us...the audiences we have had since then in my opinion have been more open and willing to accept that we are a non traditional story.
That's interesting. I thought the audience would know that with the Director of Rent being behind the show, you know?
Yeah. You know what it is, the willingness is what is different. Before they kind of had an idea what they were getting into because it is from the Director of Rent. But the willingness wasn't always there. Now people are willing to come and open their hearts to us. That is a lot to ask for people to do in front of 780 strangers. We get strangers to cry in front of each other.
Yes, I did tear up on a few parts.
Good! (smiles) We should sell Next to Normal tissues. But I think that as sad as it is at moments, it is uplifting at the end. At least for me the show comforts me knowing, "Give me pain if that's what is real...it's the price we pay to feel." That is a comforting thought that pain is okay to feel. You don't have to run away from it or pretend that it doesn't exist or be afraid of it because it is a part of life and you have to accept that. Otherwise you end up like Dan Goodman who has a lot of skeletons in his closet.
Now one part in one of your scenes that really made me smile was when your character, Henry smiled when Natalie showed up to the dance.
It's a very exciting moment for Henry when Natalie is finally willing to open her heart to him and let him be a support to her. I think they both really can't live without each other. In my mind, Henry and Natalie go off and probably get married at some point in their life. I think they are soul mates so that moment is really gratifying. I think Henry kind of knows that from early on in their relationship and wants to help Natalie realize that and let her experience joy. She doesn't experience enough of that so that is kind of what Henry's goal is throughout the play, to help her realize that there is joy in the world even though everything's fucked up.
So what makes your life next to normal?
I don't really know where to begin actually. I don't think I am like Diana or Natalie. Well, we are all messed up. Everyone has crazy families. Everyone is hurting. So you need someone like Henry or Dan who will be there through the good and the bad. I believe that we were made to pair up, to help each other survive life. We are a support for each other.

Now from Off Broadway to Previews to Broadway, are there any songs that were cut that you really wish could have stayed?
Everything that was cut is still alive in the musical just in a silent way. We have all experienced these songs and the journey of the score of this musical, and the book so somewhere in the depths of our memory all of these songs still live. As an actor, they are part of your story. I loved "Growing Up Unstable" but I don't think the audience needed to hear that song when they did. It is still in Natalie's story. She still has a moment where she feels what that song had to say. So I don't think I really miss anything since everything is still there just silent now.
Of all of your theatre experience, what role would you choose to play again if you had the opportunity?
I have been doing theatre since I was nine but professionally I am new to the game, as this is the first large scale production I have done. If I had to choose though, I loved playing Linus in You're A Good Man Charlie Brown.
Do you have a dream role, even if the musical has closed?
I would have loved to play Moritz in Spring Awakening. Although my dream role hasn't been written yet. I'm actually doing this project now, The Fortress of Solitude. It's an awesome book. Michael Friedman (Saved) is writing the music and lyrics for this project. Itamar Moses and Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back) are also working on this project. That is really exciting. Anyway, I would love to think that my dream role has yet to be written. I would also like to do a straight play next.
Moment of silence for Spring Awakening on Broadway.
Speaking of moments, what moment in the musical touches you the most?
It changes often actually. One of my favorite moments is when I get to say, "To the girl who was burning so brightly. In a promise, like the light from Orion above." Then I say, "The boy is long lost. So lost, forgotten his reasons" and then she jumps into my arms. I love that moment. It is a really satisfying moment for Henry.
Now did you know any of the N2N cast prior to being cast?
I knew of Alice Ripley of course. I knew of Michael Greif. I saw Rent like 10 times when I was in high school and college. I was really intimidated at first to work with them. I knew of Tom Kitt and High Fidelity. I hadn't met anyone personally but I kind of knew of everyone. Everyone though, we are like a big family.
Many celebrities come to the show, so who has been your favorite guest?
I met Betty Buckley a few weeks ago and I was so tongue tied. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban came about a week ago. They sent us a beautiful bouquet of flowers and that was really cool.
Where are some of your favorite places to hang out in NY?
I love McCarren Park. I walk by and smell fresh cut grass and I feel like I am in the suburbs. It is so nice. I love hanging out there. I always find myself hanging around here too, a lot of the times in my dressing room. I am such a homebody. I don't go out to bars or go clubbing. Neither does Henry.
Can we expect to see you on TV?
I would love to dip my hands into all of these different mediums. I would love to see what each has to offer. We have meetings with casting directors and hope that this can lead to many different things. I would love to do TV, film, a straight Broadway play...
Next to Normal movie. Just throwing it out there.
I know! I think it would make a great film.
What are your remedies for your voice?
I go to the gym as often as I can before the show. It is the best way for me to warm up. It makes singing a lot easier. Hydration is the most important thing. I as drinking water constantly. Throat Coat and also these homemade vapors I use when I am sick. A neti pot is gross but it really clears you out.
What is your favorite set or prop?
I have a favorite and a least favorite...my least favorite is the piano. It is like a cart so if you step on it, it can lock. So sometimes it is hard to push, especially since the second floor has no barriers. My favorite prop is my lighter because I carry it in 4-5 scenes in Act One and I just am attached to it now.

HawthoRNe Pilot Review

In HawthoRNe, Jada Pinkett Smith plays Christina Hawthorne in a medical drama that focuses on a group of nurses at Richmond Trinity Hospital.
Right off the bat, you can definitely tell that Jada Pinkett Smith is thrilled to be back on television. I am thrilled to see her back on the small screen as well but there are two things that needs to happen...There is no doubt that Jada is giving her all to the character of Christina Hawthorne, but this excitement should not give off the "trying to hard" to be the character image. Also, I cannot wait for the writing in general, and the writing for this character's development builds. So the opening makes one want to know how Christina’s husband died. I didn’t expect the answer to come out in this episode but I do expect it to come out within the next few episodes. Dragging something like that out would seem to be a bit much. Introducing a certain side of a character through a death of someone close to them is good to see but what else makes Christina complex? What outside of widow, single parent, and nurse who goes out of her way to help people makes her a character someone that I want to watch? Time will tell. I have to admit that I did laugh in the beginning, I believe out of shock when Christina said “Goodbye” to the patient David and then he really did jump off the roof of the building. Since that opens the door for humor in the show, I hope this door stays open and opportunities for comedy are used wisely…meaning not just thrown in there to have something funny in the episode. This also means not mimicking odd humor and emotional levels of other medical dramas. Make the show your own. It was a smart idea to write in the baby storyline to the pilot because that really draws people in. I must say that I knew as soon as the homeless woman showed Christina the baby that it was biologically hers. So the fact that this was supposed to be a surprise near the end was disappointing. Please, let’s not go down that predictable road. Getting to the characters…I hope that what we have seen in the pilot of Camille (Hannah Hodson) is not what we will always see. If I know that I don’t want to see a teenager in the stage of doing things for attention, then I am sure many more do not want to see it. Once some depth is given to Camille, I will be able to appreciate her more. I enjoyed getting to learn a crucial part about Bobbie’s (Suleka Mathew) life. It will be interesting to see Christina’s best friend both at the hospital and out of the hospital…finding out more about what her life is like. At first, I really wanted to believe that I got the wrong impression of Candy (Christina Moore) but unfortunately she has her own definition of helping people in the hospital it seems. Hopefully there is more to her than what it appears to be. I feel like there was not enough screen time for Ray (David Julian Hirsh) and Dr. Tom Wakefield (Michael Vartan) in order to make any impressions on them. So I am looking forward to see what these characters bring to the table, especially Michael Vartan. There is this need to see Michael Vartan in the forefront of the show…so let’s hope we get to see an entertaining character for him on this show. He alone is reason to watch. I am thrilled to see Vanessa Lengies on the show, as I am a big fan of her acting. Overall, I am just really interested to see where these characters can be taken and what stories will be shown that viewers haven’t already seen before. It is so nice to see a show that focuses on the nurses as opposed to the doctors, so that right there should bring many curious viewers. This show has the potential to be a very moving series if it continues to develop the characters as more complex than they appear to be, stay away from what is predictable, stay away from repetition, and really makes the show their own.
HawthoRNE Airs Tuesdays at 9pm on TNT.
Dove Burst

Gossip Girl ended one month ago but that doesn't mean you can't go out and continue to buy Dove Go Fresh products, an amazing partner for the show which helped promote GOSSIP GIRL: Real NYC Stories Revealed.
Ever since April, I have been enjoying Dove Burst's refreshing Nectarine & White Ginger body wash and body bar. My favorite brand is Dove so I already knew that I would love this new line. There is just something about Dove that moisturizes my skin like no other products I have tried. Anyway, the scent of Dove Burst is strong but not overpowering, as you do not even need to open the top of the body wash or open the box the body bar comes in to smell it...which I love. You know those Dove commercials that show that there is no soap scum after you take a shower and there is with a regular bar of soap? Well that certainly rings true! Not only do you smell fresh but you feel fresh and just as smooth as can be. It is the perfect early morning pick me up as it definitely wakes up the senses. Best of all, it is inexpensive! If you do not have yours now I suggest you go out and get your own Dove Burst Nectarine & White Ginger products today.

Talking to Josh Keaton
I recently had the opportunity to talk to the voice of both Peter Parker and Spider-Man on the popular animated Disney TV series The Spectacular Spider-Man. His name is Josh Keaton and he is not only an amazing voice over actor, but you have seen him act on a number of shows including Bones, ER, and Boston Public. I learned a lot about not only his TV career, but his music career...and he even told me what his experience was like being part of Newsies.

When and how did you get into voice-over work?
Voice over work grew out of my on camera career. It wasn't until after Hercules that I was approached by a voice over agent. Out of that, many more opportunities came about.
What’s the auditioning process like for voice-over work as opposed to being on screen/stage?
Usually with on camera work, you get more time to look over the material and prepare. With voice over, it is usually a cold read and then you go in. There are some instances where you will be given a script ahead of time though.
Do you have a favorite voice that you have portrayed over the years?
I like doing a lot of different voices but I do use a variation of my own voice a lot. It is also fun to do roles that are a totally different character that doesn't sound anything like me.
Is it harder to create relationships with actors that you work with when you have voice over work as opposed to on screen or on stage work?
I wouldn't say that it is harder. Voice over in general is a pretty small industry. A lot of talent is used over and over. In a way I end up having more friends here than in other industries since I see them so much.
How can you relate to your current character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man?
I pretty much was Peter Parker when I was younger. Growing up in high school, I was a complete dork. I still am. But I was not popular but at the same time, I was a child actor and I had a whole other group of friends in the entertainment industry. So it was kind of like a dual life that Spiderman has. I had a lot of the same parallels growing up so I can definitely relate.
What was it like being part of Hercules?
It was a fantastic experience! It was a long process. I went in for one audition and I didn't hear anything for 6 months. I had forgotten about the project by the time I was called back. The audition process alone was close to one year. I was able to do a few scenes with Rip Torn. It is always more fun when you have actors in the studio. I didn't have a personal trainer but I did have a personal animator. For all of the recording sessions I had, there was a camera capturing my upper body so that they could use my gestures and facial expressions.
What is the process like for voice over work when dealing with video games?
With video games it is usually the work where you get the least amount of preparation. You are in the studio yourself and you don't get any of the material ahead of time, you are just there doing stuff. As a gamer, I tend to know a lot of the genres and I am familiar with what to do. When you play enough games, you kind of know what they want. Video games are becoming more and more like animated shows in that there is so much more storyline being brought into video games and there is more focus on the vocal production. I can't tell you how many times when I was growing up when I would play a game and hate when it got to the cut scene. Today, you see much better handling of this so that is fantastic.
How many times have you been to San Diego Comic Con whether as a fan or to promote your work?
My first time going to Comic Con was to promote The Spectacular Spider-Man before it premiered and when I went I could not believe that I hadn't been there before! I have been there 3 times and Wonder Con twice. Nothing has been finalized but I probably will be going this year.
What do you remember about being in the film Newsies?
Newsies was a lot of fun. I was in Junior High and pretty much gone the entire time! It was about 6 months of rehearsal and 6 months of shooting. I really miss movies like this. Kenny Ortega was ahead of his time then and now he has had so much success with High School Musical. It was a shame that so much of the film got cut out to make it shorter. I do remember that everything was bigger than life and it was a really fantastic experience.
You have appeared on many hit shows including Touched by an Angel, Step by Step, Sister, Sister, Will and Grace, and Boy Meets World so what has been your favorite show to work on?
I would say Will and Grace. Everybody was so nice, so fantastic on set. Everyone was so welcoming. The actors went out of their way to make me feel at home. The writers, producers, director, everyone was great.
You are also talented musically, so can we expect to see you release an album and is Broadway in your future?
It has been a long process. The music industry is interesting. Recently, I have been working a lot with my brother in law writing and producing. When I was involved in RCA, I was not involved in the process so I am glad that things happened the way that they did because now on my own, I am more hands on with writing and producing. Right now though I am writing and producing songs for other artists. Also, I wouldn't rule out Broadway. If the right project came along, I would not hesitate.

Little Red Riding Hood Review

I was recently able to watch David Kaplan’s dark adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood, featuring a young Christina Ricci. Now there are not many black and white films that can keep my attention like this short film. I was instantly grabbed by the dancing wolf in the beginning of the film. The wolf, played by Timour Bourtasenkov reminded me of Cats on Broadway. I absolutely loved the narration by Quentin Crisp. This hooked me right away since that is the only voice you hear in the entire half hour. The film is such an eerie and exciting piece of fantasy...art. Who would have guessed that a children’s story could be portrayed in such a way? I definitely recommend this short film!
Little Red Riding Hood premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and screened in 50+ international film festivals, receiving several awards. You may have seen Little Red Riding Hood televised on The Sundance Channel as well. I was excited to learn that the film is currently being used as an educational tool in universities worldwide.
Other stories included in the collection are Kaplan’s rare award-winning films LITTLE SUCK-A-THUMB and THE FROG KING. Bonus features include audio commentaries by David Kaplan and folklore scholar Jack Zipes.
Little Red Riding Hood will be available on DVD tomorrow on Amazon.

Telly Leung Talks Rent & More
If you have seen Rent on Broadway in the past few years or Rent on Tour now, then you may have seen Telly Leung performing on stage. As a huge fan of Rent myself, I was so thrilled to be able to interview another cast member of Rent. Telly not only talks about Rent, but Wicked, Sweeney Todd, and more! Check it out.

Do you remember when you got asked to be part of the tour with Adam & Anthony?
I was lucky enough to be in the company when Adam and Anthony came back to Broadway a couple of years ago. I was a big fan of the show when I was in high school, and I remember vividly sitting in the front row, and watching the original company absolutely blow my mind back then. Ten years later, I’m sharing a stage with Adam and Anthony, and it seems almost surreal – like I’m living out a dream I’ve had over and over in my head! I am incredibly honored to be a part of RENT: The Broadway Tour. I know that they had a large number of RENT alums from the last 13 years on Broadway (and the numerous national / international tours) to choose from when it came time to cast the show – and to be offered a part of this experience is very humbling. I love this show so much – and I am so glad that RENT is being told this way, with THIS cast, all over the country. Every single cast member is giving 110% percent of themselves on the stage because we all LOVE and cherish this show so much. Because most of us are alums, we know that this show gives back to you as much as you put in as a performer – and we are truly giving it all we’ve got. “No Day But Today.” We have a few new additions to the RENT family this time around, and they are stellar. I watch them and say to myself, “You sure you haven’t done this show before?” We are all having an amazing time doing the show, and touring the country.
What was it like when the last few performances of Rent were filmed?
I am thrilled that RENT on Broadway has been preserved on DVD. Michael Warren (the director) and the folks at Sony / Radical did an amazing job capturing the raw energy of the stage production – and honoring Jonathan Larson’s show. I also think it’s great that Michael Greif and Marlies Yearby (our director and choreographer, respectively) have their work preserved in this way as well. I thought I was going to be very emotional on the closing night of RENT – but I personally didn’t really feel anything until the day after, when I had to go back to the empty Nederlander Theater to pick up my stuff. Because we were shooting on closing night, there was no time to let emotions take over. We had to tell the story, and tell it the best way we could – one last time – because it was going to be preserved for posterity. Usually, last shows on Broadway (especially after an epic run, like RENT) are more about the emotional goodbyes than it is about the show – but I think the RENT closing was very different (for me, anyway) because we had a task at hand. The ensemble energy was palpable, the story was well-told, and the show was very tight. Those closing night emotions didn’t really surface until the end, when the original company and final company came together on stage to sing “Seasons of Love.” Then, it really hit us all that RENT on Broadway was truly over.
Do you have a favorite memory from the closing night of Rent?
My favorite memory of closing night of RENT was looking out into the audience, looking up at the balcony, and seeing all of the RENT alums sitting there, cheering us on. I thought the company did a very good job of making sure that anyone who had done RENT on Broadway was able to get a ticket for the closing night. The RENT family is a very tight-knit group, and I could feel their energy and love pouring out from the stage.
What have you learned the most from Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal?
I am in awe of how Adam and Anthony keep this show so new and fresh. They are extremely playful on stage, and they have a sense of spontaneity in their performance that is so admirable, especially knowing how long they’ve been a part of this show. You would think that after doing the workshop production, opening the show on Broadway, being a part of the movie and returning to Broadway in their roles that they would tire or regress to stale acting choices. Instead, you watch them work, and it’s inspiring to watch how they keep it fresh night after night – even after 13 years.
What is the biggest challenge in touring?
The traveling schedule can be tricky. The changing of time zones, climates, and theaters can be challenging to the voice and body. We are playing a lot of one-week engagements, which means that our only day off (Monday) is spent packing, getting up early, and traveling.
How are the audiences reacting to this touring cast?
We’ve had the best audiences all over the country on this tour. I do a video blog for the tour and in North Carolina, I took some footage of the stage door after the show. The out-pouring of love and affection from audiences during and after the show has been overwhelming – and it’s consistently like that in EVERY city we play. It’s interesting watching parents bring their kids to the show – and exposing a whole new generation to RENT.
What was it like performing at the Tony’s last year with the original cast?
Performing on the Tony Awards was a dream come true – and getting to do it with RENT was so special. Of course, I’d love to return to the Tony Awards in the future with a nominated new show or Broadway revival.
Many celebrities have seen Rent on Broadway, so who was your favorite celebrity visit?
When Tamyra Gray was in the show, we got to meet Kelly Clarkson. That was pretty cool. Her new album just came out, and I told her my favorite track on it was this song called, “Sober”, which she admitted to me was her favorite, too.
Do you have any memories that you want to share with the fans when you were Boq in Wicked?
Getting to play Boq was such a surprise. I had auditioned for the first national tour of WICKED, and didn’t think I did so well, since I didn’t hear anything from casting. Then, I get an offer (out of the blue) to originate the role of Boq in the Chicago company of WICKED. I later found out from Joe Mantello that he had seen me in the Broadway revival of Sondheim’s PACIFIC OVERTURES, and thought of me for Boq. Just goes to show that even when you aren’t auditioning, you are auditioning. That company of WICKED was such a fantastic group. Our leading witches, Ana Gasteyer and Kate Reinders, had an incredible chemistry together. Steven Skybell (who played Dillamond) was my dressing room neighbor and we shared many laughs. I had the best scene partner in the world in Heidi Kettinring, who played Nessa Rose, and I got to work with some stellar Chicago-based actors as the Wizard and Morrible (Gene Weygandt and Rondi Reed respectively). We liked each other so much that we'd often NOT go out between shows and order in, and have a little picnic in the big Elphaba dressing room... just so we'd get to hang out more.
When RENT performed on the Tony Awards last year, I was getting ready to be pre-set backstage at Radio City, and I saw Rondi Reed only moments after she won the Tony for AUGUST OSAGE COUNTY. We shared a beautiful moment together, hugging and jumping up and down (and making way too much joyful noise backstage). In the madness of Tony night, I didn’t think I was going to get to congratulate her in person that night – so I was thrilled I got to congratulate her in person.
Where did you hang out in Chicago?
The cast sometimes had dinner across the street at Petterino’s between shows - especially if we had family or close friends in town. It’s kind of like the Sardi’s of Chicago, and the staff always treated the WICKED cast so well. I also loved going to a wine bar called BIN 66 after the show, which had amazing wine and cheese. As a New Yorker, I’m so used to walking – and I didn’t have a car in Chicago. I loved exploring neighborhoods like Lakeview and Greek Town by foot. I also got a bike when I was there, and did a lot of biking along the lake in the summer time.
You were also in Sweeney Todd a few years ago. Which film do you prefer (original or remake)?
I’m a big SWEENEY fan, and I love both versions. In my opinion, you can’t really compare them because they are different – just like you can’t really compare RENT (the movie) and RENT: FILMED LIVE ON BROADWAY. So many edits and cuts were made to the stage version for the feature film versions of both SWEENEY and RENT to fulfill the change of medium.
Of all of the theatre work that you have done, what role has been the most like you and the least like you?
The role that was the MOST like me would probably be the “boy in the tree” in PACIFIC OVERTURES. He observes the world around him meticulously with fresh eyes, and is always discovering something new – and, as Telly, I think I try to do the same in my life.
The most challenging role I’ve done, which was truly a stretch, was Song Liling in M. BUTTERFLY. To play a Chinese spy in Communist China who fools a man into thinking he’s a woman for 20 years was something VERY difficult for me to wrap my head around. But, with lots of rehearsal, and actors homework, I tried to find as many ways I could to relate to Song’s wants and needs on a human level in order to make that role my own.
Of all of the theatre work that you have done, which play or musical would you do again?
Well - I’ve done 2 productions of RENT now, and I think it’s a show that I can do over and over again. I perform the show, and I still discover new things about the show each time I do it. I will hear a line differently, or feel differently in a particular moment on stage that I’ve done hundreds of times – and it’ll teach me something new about my character’s life, or myself as an artist. I’d also love to tackle the role of SONG in M. BUTTERFLY again. I think that I can do a better job at it – now that I’ve got one under my belt.
What was it like shooting the ABC pilot, Limelight?
I had an amazing experience working on “Limelight.” I am a graduate of a performing arts college (Carnegie Mellon University) just like my character, Kevin, and I know too well the emotional highs and lows of going to school in such a unique, high energy, competitive environment. I felt like it was such a new, fresh, interesting show – with real, believable, sympathetic characters that everyone can relate to – whether they understood the world of performing arts or not. Unfortunately, ABC did not pick up the show for the fall (“that’s showbiz!”), but I am incredibly proud of the work that we all did on the show, and I have a very special place in my heart for the project – and all involved. It was my first real venture working in Los Angeles, and I met some amazing people in the TV community. Our director / executive producer, David Semel, is such a great guy. He is brilliant at his job, and really put his heart and soul in to the project. I had been a fan of his work for a long time (he is responsible for the pilot of one of my favorite shows - “Heroes”). Our other executive producer / writer (K.J. Steinberg, of “Gossip Girl”) also was very passionate about “Limelight” – and both of their collective energies proved contagious for all involved in the project. I have done a ton of theater, but this was my first TV project, starting from scratch – and everyone was so wonderful and patient with me. I learned a lot about the world of TV, and myself as an actor, through working on “Limelight”.
Can we expect another EP from you soon or a full album soon?
I am always writing whenever inspiration hits – and when I have enough to put together an album, I’d love to do that. Perhaps when the tour is over, I’ll put something together.
What can we expect from you in the future outside of acting and singing?
I’ve actually begun doing a fair bit of teaching, and I really enjoy it. I like working with young people who love theater. They are the next generation of musical theater. I am so thankful for the teachers I’ve had and what they’ve given me. I’d love to give it back somehow.
