The Little Mermaid Closes Today

Tonight marks the last performance of The Little Mermaid on Broadway after 50 previews and 685 performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. As The Little Mermaid is my second favorite Disney classic and I never got to see the show on Broadway, I am pretty bummed about this. The show sold out the remainder of its run not too long ago and I haven't heard news about a tour...the show got mixed reviews but I always wanted to see it regardless, so hopefully a tour will happen or a revival in the future. Only time will tell. In the meantime, I need to go out and get a DVD copy of the movie since I still have all of my Disney movies on VHS.

Everyone have a great show today and I look forward to everyone's future projects.

Glee Cast Talks on the Gleek Tour

Last week, I mentioned that I attended the Gleek Tour at King of Prussia Mall where members of the cast of Glee held a meet and greet and Q&A with the fans. I was able to interview a few members of the cast and previews of the interviews are below! You can hear my entire interview with Lea Michele on the latest episode of Gleek Squad Podcast. You will be able to hear the entire interviews of the rest of the cast members in future episodes of Gleek Squad, so stay tuned for that!

Also check out these videos of a quick behind the scenes look at right before the meet and greet began, the cast at the signing, and fans singing "Don't Stop Believin" while waiting for the Q&A to begin.

Lea Michele

What remedies do you have for your voice?
Rest and water, definitely!

If the glee club went on a school trip, where would you want them to go?
I think they would go to NY for sure!

Tell me about your character's love life.
I can tell you that definitely some stuff goes on with Rachel & Finn but he's not the only guy that Rachel hooks up with this season.

Jenna Ushkowitz

Do you have a favorite quote?
It's so hard, I have so many one liners...I have to say that one of my favorites is "We're d-d-d-doomed." Everybody says it to me now!

How far in advance did you get the script before shooting & were there a lot of re-writes?
There are actually not a lot of rewrites. We'll go through the writer's draft and and then we get the script again a week before the next episode. Sometimes they cut stuff, sometimes they need another song, sometimes we don't get rights to some songs...so it definitely changes a little bit but no so much.

Amber Riley

This tour is great but would you be on board for a live music Gleek tour?
I don't know, it's a lot of work. I sing background and I know how much work it is to put into a show...sure...I think that would be cool.

Are you interested in writing, producing, or directing?
I'm really starting to get into cinematography. I really like writing a lot. I think I could do all of it. I think it would be really fun! It seems really stressful for them though.

If the glee club went on a school trip, where would you want them to go?
I think that they would try to make a school trip to LA and try to get a record deal!

Chris Colfer

What’s your dream Broadway role?
You know that's a good question. Hmm...I would love to an original role.

What decade do you think has the best music?
I don't know what generation it's from but I am a huge fan of grunge rock and roll music.

Are you interested in writing, producing, or directing?
Writing absolutely. I don't think I could write an entire episode...maybe if it were a generic into the future episode.

Kevin McHale

What do you have to say about your character's love life?
Something definitely happens but it happens a little differently than you may think.

What is your favorite set or prop piece?
We are in the choir room a lot so it's kind of like home now.

If the glee club went on a school trip, where would you want them to go?
They are in the middle of Ohio but I think it would really funny if they went to the beach because it might be awkward. To see how those characters react on a beach would be kind of funny.

Glee premieres Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 9/8c.

Misunderstandings Premiere A Success

Last week, I made a post about the movie premiere of the independent film, Misunderstandings which took place in Fairfax, VA. The film premiered in front of a sold out crowd including the cast, crew, Tray Chaney (The Wire), Darnerien McCants (Redskins), and more.

The American Cancer Society was on site handing out educational material about cancer, as 100% of the profits from the premiere were donated to the American Cancer Society.

More photos from the premiere can be seen here.

Interview with America's Best Dance Crew Judge, Shane Sparks

Earlier in the week I talked to America's Best Dance Crew judge, Shane Sparks about the hit MTV show, America's Best Dance Crew, So You Think You Can Dance, Dreamgirls, and more. Check it out!

Tell me about your involvement with co-choreographing Dreamgirls revival.
That's a very exciting moment in my life. I was hired for the choreography for the show so that I could add a little flavor to it from a hip hop point of view. I had already seen the movie, and they flew me to NY see the play, but figuring out how to put together choreography for Broadway...from stage right to stage left with costume changes, etc... so much went into it. It was so much work but it was incredible.

Is there any number that has drastically changed as far as dance goes?
"Steppin To the Bad Side" is totally different than what you have seen before. I put a completely different twist on it. I added briefcases, hat tricks, a kaleidoscope perspective, and it's very dramatic.

Have rehearsals began for NY?
No, they haven't started yet. We were in Korea and it was a blast. From what we heard, it is the number one show out there. Rehearsals out there were great. Everyone was so disciplined, professional, and ready to work. I loved it.

Talk about the strengths and weaknesses of the crew, Rhythm City.
They are very talented and very well rounded. I don't see a weakness in hem yet. The only thing that could hold them back is if they get comfortable and feel like they have the show in the bag. When the dancers know that they have to fight for it, they really give it to you.

What style of dance do you find to be the most challenging to teach to people?
The most challenging style would probably be locking. Locking takes so much technique. It has a natural feel to it as well. There's a vibe to it too. You can have all of the locking down but if you don't have that natural feel and vibe, it won't matter.

Katie Holmes performed on SYTYCD but what other celebrities would you like to see get out there and dance?
I would like to see LL Cool J, Paris Hilton, Tyra Banks, Tom Cruise, Will Smith...umm there are so many people I would like to see get out there. You know, I would like to see the cast of The Secret Life of the American Teenager and the cast of 90210 do a dance battle, that would be crazy!

Fan Questions

I can’t dance, but I like to dance so how do I make my own moves and still be cool?
If you don't dance a lot, you need to find a move whether it's a two step or slide, something like that and you will still be cool. Find a comfortable rhythm and movement and stay on top of it and you will be okay.

A few people I know think that JC takes after Simon Cowell’s judging techniques, who do you think you resemble?
Hopefully nobody. (laughs)

When did you first decide that you wanted to seriously pursue dance as a career?
I would have to say it was probably around the time when I did the video, "I Wanna Be Down" by Brandy. It wasn't until then that I started to think about it when people were giving me praises because I originally came out here to LA with a singing group. After the Brandy video, I focused my career on being a dancer and not an entertainer singing.

What do you think about the show Dancing with the Stars?
It is a very interesting show. They are doing dances that most kids never have even thought about doing and adults love it so that's why it's the number one show, everyone can watch it.

Any closing remarks?
Shane Sparks Dance Style is a new DVD that I just finished and I teach 4 different dance styles on there so look out for that.

Bring It On: Fight to the Finish DVD Review

I was curious to see what Bring It On: Fight to the Finish, the 5th film in the Bring It On franchise had to offer so it was nice to see the DVD come in the mail. As of now, I have seen Bring It On 1, 3, and 5. Although I think it is safe to say that none of the films come close to how great the first film is. While the majority would say that 2-5 films are ultimately the same, Bring It On: Fight to the Finish is still a film you can enjoy on a Saturday afternoon.

DVD Release Date: September 1, 2009
1 Disc/1 hour 43 minutes Run time/PG-13

In the all-new movie Bring It On: Fight to the Finish, East Los Angeles high school cheer squad captain Lina Cruz (Christina Milian) and her best friends Gloria (Vanessa Born) and Treyvonetta (Gabrielle Dennis) have high hopes of winning the Spirit Championships with the team’s fiery fusion of Latin and hip-hop moves. Instead, Lina’s world is turned upside down when her mother remarries and her family relocates to Malibu where she is forced to adjust to a new home, a new stepsister (Holland Roden) and a new school with a less-than-stellar cheer squad. Always ready for a challenge, Lina takes on the daunting task on transforming the Malibu Vista High Sea Lions cheer squad into a championship team, but she will have to get past the award-winning Jaguar cheer squad and their captain, Avery (Rachele Smith). Lina’s budding romance with Avery’s brother Evan (Cody Longo) only intensifies the rivalry. With the stakes higher than ever before, Lina devises a bold plan that could blow the Jaguars right off of the competition floor and lead the Sea Lions to victory!

The film starts out with a dream sequence opening and thank goodness for that as it is full of the stereotypical personalities we saw in the 3rd Bring It On film. As the film goes on, it lightens up. Christina Milian's character is Cuban American and the film is deeply tied to the Latin culture and hip hop dancing. There seemed to be more dancing than cheering in the routines, which was odd but actually more enjoyable. There were no familiar faces from previous Bring It On films yet it seems like the same school settings were used as filming locations, I'm not positive though. As far as the storyline goes, it was not original...it was the same as we've seen in all of the previous Bring It On films which makes me wonder why these films are still being made. There can still be new stories developed around cheer competitions. Anyway, as for the acting, there were some weak actors but this is not a major motion picture film so there is time to perfect that. The best part about the film was the actual All Star Spirit Championship which was choreographed very well, and the music and directing of the routines was great. E! News reporter, Giuliana Rancic made a cameo in the film, which was fun to see. The film overall was good although I don't see myself running to watch it again. You can tell that there was a lot of work put into this film in every aspect...and there was thought put into how to make it more than the previous films. That thought and effort is part of the reason why it was good.

As for the Bonus Features... these features were utilized very well! The Practice Round takes you behind the scenes as choreographer, Tony G teaches cheer routines to the cast. This special feature was crucial in a way, so that viewers can see just how much work this cast puts into the film. The feature, Back Stage Pass takes viewers behind-the-scenes at the making of the film. This feature helps you get to know each of the main characters, takes you inside cheer camp and more. It's a lot of fun to watch. On Set With Christina Milian is an interactive video diary directed by Christina herself as she talks to cast members on the set of the film. The best diary entry was "Show N Go Basket Toss" where Christina practices a cheer stunt. Quite entertaining and scary to watch. There are a few Deleted Scenes that were not entertaining or did not further the storyline, so it is understandable why they were deleted. Lastly, on the bonus features, you can watch an episode of Mun2: The Chicas Project, "Flip This" in which the Chicas go to cheer camp in Texas. This has nothing to do with Bring It On, so it's not necessary to watch. The last two bonus features mentioned, I would skip but the others are worth the watch.

Bring It On: Fight to the Finish comes out on Blu-ray Hi-Def and DVD on September 1, 2009.

Fringe Season 1 DVD Review

I was thrilled to receive the Fringe: The Complete First Season on DVD since I enjoyed the first half of the season but was too busy to finish watching the second half of the season. Not only did I get to catch up on all that I had missed, I also enjoyed watching over 6 hours of special features! There was so much to enjoy, you must own it on DVD!

Season 1 Original Air Date: 2008 – 2009
Season 1 DVD Release Date: September 8, 2009
7 Discs/20 Episodes/1272 minutes Run time/Not Rated

From J.J. Abrams (Lost), Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (the team behind Star Trek, Mission: Impossible III and Alias) and executive producers Jeff Pinkner and Bryan Burk (both of Lost and Alias), Fringe revolves around three unlikely colleagues – a beautiful, young and determined FBI agent (Anna Torv), a brilliant but off-the-wall scientist (John Noble), and his sardonic, roguish son (Joshua Jackson) – who team up to investigate a series of peculiar deaths and disasters known as “The Pattern.” The trio suspects that someone is using the world as a laboratory. And many of the clues lead them to Massive Dynamic, a shadowy global corporation that may be more powerful than any nation. Season 1 also starred Lance Reddick, Kirk Acevedo, Blair Brown, Jasika Nicole and Mark Valley. Fringe is from Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Fringe had me hooked before it even aired since J.J. Abrams was part of creating this project. I was able to attend the latter half of the Fringe panel at San Diego Comic Con in 2008 and was thrilled with what the everyone on the panel had to say about the show. Once trailers and teasers began to come out, the sci fi and mystery aspects of the show grabbed me immediately. After attending a screening/panel at The Paley Center, I knew for sure that there was an abundant amount of potential for this show. This show having such an innovative plot would be a hit! Once the season started... the first few episodes were mildly entertaining and with that came an end to myself watching the show religiously. However, once you watch this show, you just can't stop watching it. There is something about the plot that sucks you back in. After coming back to watch the entire season, I can now say that each episode is better than the last. The show has vastly improved from the Pilot episode to the season finale. Fringe is well scripted and well very produced and this is only the beginning.

As for the special features...there is so much to enjoy! Everyone will enjoy Roberto Orci’s Production Diary as he takes viewers on a behind the scenes look at filming the Pilot episode day by day. Roberto did a fabulous job showing insight on the day to day schedule of filming. One of my favorite special features is Evolution: The Genesis of Fringe where Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and J.J. Abrams discuss how the idea for the show and characters came together. The Casting of Fringe tells the story straight from the actors themselves and producers how the main cast members were cast into their roles. Viewers will see a bit of the audition tapes for 4 main cast members. I was disappointed that Joshua Jackson’s casting story was not shared but overall, I enjoyed every bit of this special feature. The Gene the Cow Montage was short, simple, and fun to watch. That is all there is to that. The Behind the Real Science of Fringe feature is very intriguing, as it brings more reality than one ever thought before to Fringe. The Gag Reel is titled Unusual Side Effects and it is hilarious! There is so much packed into this short reel, it does not disappoint and I cannot wait to see what goofs Season 2 will bring. Fringe Visual Effects does a fabulous job at taking an in depth look at the creation of the special effects in 6 episodes. There are 3 Full-Length Commentaries, for the Pilot, The Ghost Network, and Bad Dreams. I was disappointed that there was no commentary for the season finale and none of the cast members were in any of the 3 commentaries. Aside from that, these commentaries provided great insight into these episodes and Fringe as a whole. A Massive Undertaking is supposed to take you on an in depth inside look of the making of select episodes. Actually, the massive undertaking only received an in depth exploration on how the Pilot came together. All of the others seem to be extended versions of the "Deciphering the Scene" special feature, as it really only focuses on one scene. Hopefully this feature is taken out or modified in Season 2. Dissected Files shows viewers about 6 unaired scenes for 5 episodes and when you watch all of the other unaired scenes, you will understand why they were cut. Lastly, Deciphering the Scene is created for every single episode of Fringe, which I find to be brilliant. Viewers will get a better understanding of how certain scenes came together. It is a fun feature that I hope to see again and hopefully will be a bit longer next time around. A more in depth review of all of the above special features is below.

Overall, the picture is amazing and whether or not you have surround sound, you will feel engrossed in every single episode. The set comes in a a collectible lenticular slipcase which I absolutely love! The booklet is thin and very resourceful when looking at what special features are on what disc.

Special Features:
On various discs in the Special Features Menu, this note is at the bottom of the screen, so that whenever you see [!] next to a feature you know what this means:
[!] Warning: Spoiler Alert! This piece contains crucial elements. Be sure to watch all of this season’s episodes of Fringe before accessing this piece.

Roberto Orci Production Diary: (13:05 Run Time)
Everyone will enjoy Roberto's production diary as he takes viewers on a behind the scenes look at filming the Pilot episode day by day. The Pilot had 418 cast and crew members film over a period of 31 days and Bob shows viewers what it was like filming for a few of those days. He shows viewers what it is like filming in the extreme cold weather in Toronto, Canada, how certain special effects come together, the steps included in editing, a close up of the "sides" also known as the production notes for the day (which I find to be very interesting), and more. There are a few fun laugh out loud moments in this diary and there is a lot of insight on the day to day schedule of filming. It is astounding to see how much work is put into one episode and Bob did a fabulous job showing this in the diary.

[!]Evolution: The Genesis of Fringe: (9:06 Run Time)
One of my favorite special features is this feature where Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and J.J. Abrams discuss how the idea for the show and characters came together. It is made a point that much of the show is grounded in reality yet the show is incredibly unique in its scientific plots. There is a substantial amount of time dedicated to the executive producers discussing what makes the main characters so compelling. Lastly, staff writer, Zack Whedon talks about how the symbols (apple, butterfly, frog, flower, and hand) and the yellow light next to each of these images connect to an alphabet which I did not know about, so that was a very relevant piece of information to gather. Each episode spells a word based on the images shown…very interesting! Who already knew that and figured out the words? Now I’m going to have to watch the entire season over again and figure this out! Fringe keeps fans addicted that is for sure.

[!] The Casting of Fringe: (9:23 Run Time)
In this special feature, producers and the main cast discuss how those in the series came to be cast. Anna Torv, Lance Reddick, Kirk Acevedo, Jasika Nicole, Blair Brown, and John Noble are featured in this special feature in that exact order. Casting Director, April Webster also explains what her job entails and what the crew was looking for in the actors during casting. You see a bit of the audition tapes for Lance Reddick (who originally read for Agent Charlie Francis), Kirk Acedvedo (who originally read for Peter Bisop), Blair Brown, and John Noble. Now while I was disappointed that Joshua Jackson’s casting story was not shared, overall, I enjoyed every bit of this special feature. I was thrilled to see bits of the audition tapes because you get a sense of how much the characters have grown since then.

Gene the Cow Montage: (2:47 Run Time)
This was a cute, fun special feature! You'll find out just how many cows are used, the cast discuss what it was like working with a cow, and the animal handler talks about the cow a bit. Some people might wonder why there is a special feature about the cow...you won't find your answer in this special feature but it is a fun, short special feature so just go ahead and watch it.

[!] Behind the Real Science of Fringe: (10:28 Run Time)
Robert Chiappetta & Glen Whitman are the New Media Consultants used for Fringe and we are introduced to them in the beginning of this feature. It is made a point that everything we see in Fringe is based from some degree of reality. Various episodes are broken down scientifically, so we understand the origins of these stories from rapid aging and teleportation to re-animation. This feature is very intriguing, as it brings more reality than one ever thought before to Fringe. If you weren’t thinking about what you saw in Fringe before, this will make you want to do research on what has been shown in this season and think about what is to come in future seasons.

Unusual Side Effects: (4:32 Run Time)
The Gag Reel is hilarious! There is so much packed into this short reel, from tripping, to sounds interrupting scenes (including Joshua Jackson’s cell phone ringing), to messing up lines of course, a little bit of singing from Anna Torv, and of course lots of laughs. This gag reel does not disappoint and I cannot wait to see what goofs Season 2 will bring.

Fringe Visual Effects: (15:16 Run Time)
This special feature runs for just over 15 minutes and takes a look at the creation of the special effects in 6 episodes. It features some of the biggest VFX shots of the show. In the very beginning of the feature, we are reminded that there are visual effects that people don’t even realize are visual effects. It’s quite obvious that green screen is very heavily used but in this feature we see every single step of the creation from the original plate to the final shot. J.J. Abrams had a few things to say about each episode that was featured and highly praised Visual Effects Supervisor, Jay Worth for his incredible work throughout the season. It was very interesting to see Executive Producer/Director, Alex Graves, Visual Effects Supervisor, Kevin Blank and Co-Stars Anna Torv and Mark Valley discuss a scene from the Pilot. Co-executive producer, David H. Goodman talked a bit about the visual effects of the terrifying heart worm in the episode, In Which We Meet Mr. Jones. More interesting though was Lead 3D Artist, Michael Kirylo walking viewers through attaching the parasite to the heart and creating the pumping actions of the heart. Michael also had a bit to say about the episode, The No – Brainer, which was one of the episodes I thought really stood out this season. It was fun to find out that there was an actor who had a green screen glove for when the virus comes out of the computer and there was a hand sculpted as a model for the motions that it would make in the final result. In the episode, The Dreamscape, everyone from Co-Creator/Executive Producer, Rob Orci to Actor, Ptolemy Slocum who plays Mark Young in the episode talk about the opening scene with Ptolemy, the butterflies, and the window stunt. As this was one of my favorite episodes, it was very interesting to get a sense of everything that was involved in putting this episode together – from the prosthetics and makeup to the stunt double, etc… If you are interested to find out not only what the influences were for the monster in the episode, Unleashed but see the original artwork and how the monster evolved, this is the special feature to watch. Also, the crane is the main focus in showcasing the special effects for the episode, The Arrival.

Three Full-Length Commentaries:
I was disappointed that there was no commentary for the season finale and none of the cast members were in any of the 3 commentaries. Aside from that, these commentaries provided great insight into these episodes and Fringe as a whole...

Pilot - The commentary was done by Alex Kurtman, J.R. Orci, and J.J. Abrams. I really enjoyed this commentary, as I found so much more about not only the Pilot, but Fringe as a whole, and more about the cast and crew. What Alec, J.R., and J.J. were going to say was not planned ahead of time and as the episode began, they formed an outline of everything that they would discuss…but after talking about casting, they completely forgot about their list. First off, I found out that the opening scene with the plane was not done in homage to Lost. Then, I learned that the title sequence was created by 23 year old, Andrew Cramer. Viewers will find out the inspiration for the 3D logos that show locations all throughout the show. The three talked about casting the main characters and compared Anna Torv to Jennifer Garner in Alias. In fact, there are a ton of comparisons to Alias throughout the commentary. I really enjoyed the guys talking about combing makeup with CGI for the special effects. It was quite interesting to hear that the creators were paying CIA consultants and yet they were not of help since nothing could be disclosed, so then they went ahead and did their own research. What was also interesting was the discussion of how to justify when those in the Fringe world that are everyday people find out about what is going on and how they react. It will be interesting to see how they continue to do this in future seasons. Overall, there was a lot discussed, with a significant chunk of Alias comparisons, and it was very informative and enjoyable commentary.

The Ghost Network - The commentary was done by David Goodman, J.R. Orci, and Bryan Burk. Right away the writers talk about when they wrote this episode and figuring out the teaser for the rest of the episode and got into talking about the episode at hand as opposed to the series as a whole. I found out so much more about how this episode came together with this commentary. There is talk of an unaired scene that was cut (and is not featured on the DVD). The three talk about imagery, rewrites, how certain ideas were conceived, and so much more! I felt like David, J.R., and Bryan utilized their commentary time very well and kept me engaged throughout the entire episode. Jay Worth is praised by all of them and Alias is mentioned a few times, though not nearly as much as in the Pilot commentary. The Wire is also given a plug. Favorite quotes and moments of the show are shared. There was a funny point made that the show is set in Boston, MA and not one person had a Boston accent this season. Quite funny! This was my favorite commentary of all three commentaries and when you watch it, you will see why.

Bad Dreams - The commentary was done by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. This commentary seemed a bit dry to me. I watched it 3 times and still missed a majority of what was said. I believe that one reason why I found myself tuning out was the fact that this seemed more like a recap and explaining what is happening with these characters in each scene as opposed to the usual commentary discussion. There are a few fun facts shared along the way about what it was like filming, but not nearly enough to stay interested throughout the entire episode.

A Massive Undertaking:
This special feature is supposed to take you on an in depth inside look of the making of select episodes. Actually, the massive undertaking only received an in depth exploration on how the Pilot came together. All of the others seem to be extended versions of the "Deciphering the Scene" special feature, as it really only focuses on one scene. In this feature, cast & crew discuss what is happening in a certain scene, and often there is insight given to why certain characters are the way they are. For example, for the season finale, There’s More Than One of Everything Production Designer, Steven Jordan showed William Bell’s personality through what is in his office. Aside from that, talk began to dwelve into how challenging the work was when the show first began production but how now the show can grow because of its success. It was very interesting to see Special Effects Makeup Artist, Stephen Kelley show us all of the molds and creations for the monster that was created for the episode, The Transformation. For The Ghost Network, the show closed down a tunnel on the East side of Manhattan! That’s not the only new fact you will find out about this episode. The episode that had the most in depth inside look of the making of an episode was the Pilot. Viewers get to see the crew filming inside the “plane,” the special effects for the virus, the choreography of stunts, filming in extreme cold weather in Toronto, Canada, and both the cast and crew talking about all of the above. Overall, the only massive undertaking I would really watch again is the Pilot. What would have been really enjoyable to see would have been hearing the writers and producers discuss how the script came together and evolved for such incredible episodes as these. Here’s to hoping that will happen in next season’s DVD.

Dissected Files:
This special feature shows viewers the unaired scenes for the episodes, Ability, The Equation, The Ghost Network, The Arrival, and Power Hungry. There were about 6 unaired scenes in total and the first of the two in The Equation I was very glad did not make the cut. The one unaired scene for The Arrival I am wondering why that was cut. Aside from that, when you watch all of the other unaired scenes, you will understand why they were cut.

Deciphering the Scene:
This special feature is created for every single episode of Fringe, which I find to be brilliant. This feature does exactly what it is titled and nothing more…for anyone who didn’t understand a certain scene the first time around, the cast & crew are here to explain it to you as an extremely short behind the scenes look at everything from the sets, lighting, wardrobe, props, shooting in NY, choreography for fight scenes, etc... is shown throughout. Viewers will get a better understanding of how certain scenes came together. The scenes that are chosen to be featured tend to be the most riveting scenes, so perfect choices. It is a fun feature that I hope to see again and hopefully will be a bit longer next time around.

Fringe will premiere its 2nd Season on Fox on September 17, 2009 at 9/8c.

Lance Reddick Discusses The New Season of Fringe

Season 2 of Fringe Premieres on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 9/8c and until then, Lance Reddick took some time out for an exclusive interview with Hollywood the Write Way to talk about the upcoming season! He even had a little bit to say about Lost.

Check it out:

So tell me about where your storyline goes in the new season of Fringe.
You definitely find out more about my personal life and who I was before Fringe.

Is getting to know you before Fringe, is that going to be done through flashbacks?
No, it's more kind of how I'm referred to and what I do. In my personal life, you will find out why I'm divorced and what my relationship with my ex-wife is like.

What can you tell us about what we will see in the first few episodes of Fringe?
I'm not sure what I can say...hmmm...Olivia's reemergence back into this universe will be shocking. The developments with Charlie will be mind blowing. You'll find out just how deep my relationship with Nina goes.

What was your favorite episode from Season 1?
I haven't seen all of Season 1 but from all of the episodes I have seen, my favorite is "Bound" when Olivia escapes after being kidnapped. I loved that episode!

What’s it like working with J.J. Abrams?
I've only met him a few times including a few weeks before the Pilot and on the set of Star Trek. The thing about J.J. is that for somebody who is so powerful, busy, and has so much energy...he cares so much about the people who are working around him, as individuals. He's such a great guy.

What's it been like moving the filming location from NY to Vancouver?
I had never been to Vancouver and I had been so used to NY and the energy of the city. But now, being in Vancouver, I can say that I love the laid back vibe, everything works so smoothly. It's just been great!

Do you check out the Fringe & Lost fan sites?
I never do..it just never occurs to me. It's funny because the past couple months it has been coming up a lot, the online fandom.

Do you tend to run into more Fringe fans or more Lost fans?
Hmmm...well since I've been in Vancouver, it's been about 50/50. When I was in NY I actually ran into The Wire fans the most.

Do you read reviews for the shows and movies you are in?
I think I read some of the reviews for Fringe when it first came out but other than that, I don't remember the last time I read a review.

Now even though your character was shot and killed on Lost...anything can happen on that show. So will we be seeing you in the final season?
I don't know but I would love to be back. I've had a blast in every single episode that I have done!

Kevin Rankin Talks Trauma

You may know him as the Rugby player “Herc” on NBC’s critically-acclaimed drama Friday Night Lights but you will soon get to see Kevin Rankin in NBC’s latest ensemble drama series, Trauma. Kevin plays EMT “Tyler Briggs” and the show follows everyday heroes such as his character from the moment they arrive on the scene to the moment they have to face their own trauma at home. There's more to tell, straight from Kevin himself!

Tell me about getting the role on Trauma.
I was working with Jeffrey Reiner and Peter Berg from Friday Night Lights who were approached by NBC to see what they could about he subject matter, emergency. I was brought on and we sat around to talk about the character. We really built up the character in a way where I really was comfortable with the character so it was great.

Friday Night Lights is a very heartwarming drama...do we get that in Trauma?
Definitely. There will be a difference but yes. There is a really rich atmosphere of San Francisco. The heart in this one is that we are meeting patients on the worst days of their lives and we take that home with us and try to deal with that. We go home with their trauma having to deal with our own home trauma.

How much research did you do for your role, did you shadow EMTs?
Yes, we did. We were in small groups to learn basic EMT protocol. Then we went out with San Francisco fire department and paramedics on a couple of shifts.

Explain your character's dynamic with the other main characters.
Tyler is partners with Cameron Boone. The paramedic has more knowledge and education than the EMT so I am just there to support my partner. Tyler gets along with everyone in the show. He deals with his trauma through humor. There is a rookie, Glenn Morrison and he is the only one that's really going to get a hard time from Tyler just because he likes to. Overall, he has a good relationship with his co-workers. One thing about Tyler is that he loves his job, and he always wants to pick up shifts because once he's home, he has to deal with his own stuff.

Tell me about what he doesn't want to deal with at home.
There's a community of EMS that travel from disaster site to disaster site from 9/11 to the Tsunami so Tyler has served in every major city. So there could be something that he's running from. He's not sure exactly what that is. I think Tyler wants to focus on helping other people so he never has to turn inward and figure out what's going on inside of him. There's some events that happen in the Pilot that traumatize some of the main characters. The thing about mental trauma is that you don't know that you have it and it comes out in really weird ways for everyone.

What are Tyler's weaknesses and strengths on the job?
He knows the protocol and knows that he can use the environment to his advantage. Being out on the field, you have to use anything within arms reach if it helps you save a person. He doesn't have to think twice about things. His weakness I think would be that he is inappropriate with his humor at times.

What's it like shooting on location in San Francisco?
Everyday I am here, it is even more beautiful. Everyone has been really welcoming with us too. Even though we block off some of their major streets, they are really patient with us and excited we are here. So that is great!

What has been the craziest, most challenging thing to shoot?
The Pilot was pretty challenging. We shut down a freeway off ramp for 5 days here in San Francisco. We blew up an 18 wheeler and had a 6/7 car pile up. I've never stood on a freeway. It was hot too. It was pretty intense.

What can we expect that you are excited for us to see?
I want to show how important and dangerous the jobs of paramedics and the fire department really are and how they deal with everything. I'd just like to show the human side of the hero.

Trauma premieres Monday, September 28, 2009 at 9PM.

Big Brother 11 Week 7 Nominations

It was great to see Jeff win HoH! I was thrilled that he won! The argument between Russell, Jordan, and Jeff was an interesting one. What Russ said in the diary room about him going after Jeff come final four...this is why Jordan & Jeff should have gotten rid of Russ earlier. On a side note, it was really funny to see Jordan and Kevin talk about Jeff gardening. Also, Natalie getting Russell upset when they were playing poker brought the laughs. Russ blows up over the smallest things. How old is he? Anyway, getting to nominations...what a crazy ride it has been...final 6 already. Wow, time went by fast. Jeff had to make a tough decision...leave his alliance with Russell and Michele or put up Natalie & Jeff as pawns. He chose the latter so hopefully Russell does indeed leave Thursday night. After that, I really want to say that I want Natalie to go but for some reason, I think that at this point she deserves to be there. Only time will tell what happens. I'm sad Big Brother has gone by so quick. The finale is not all that far away when you think about it. Hmmm...

Spotlight: Jonathan Groff

The film, Taking Woodstock releases in theaters on August 28, 2009 and I am especially excited to see the film because Jonathan Groff makes his film debut!

Pennsylvanian native and 2007 Tony Award nominee (Best Actor for Spring Awakening), Jonathan Groff will be all the buzz everything once Taking Woodstock releases. He is already all the buzz in the Broadway community and after seeing him in Spring Awakening in 2007...I can see why. Jonathan originated the role of Melchior in Spring Awakening and fantastic is an understatement.

After Spring Awakening, he took on the role of Claude Hooper Bukowski in Hair, as part of the annual “Shakespeare in the Park” summer series. I've heard nothing but amazing things about his run with Hair. Jonathan's other stage work includes the Broadway musical In My Life, Prayer for My Enemy (Off-Broadway), The Singing Forest (Off-Broadway), and regional tours of The Sound of Music, Fame, Bat Boy, and Honk!. You may have also seen Jonathan in his 2007 recurring role on One Life to Live or in Ryan Murphy’s pilot Pretty/Handsome.

He is definitely one to watch, so make sure you see Jonathan in Taking Woodstock this weekend and plan to see him on stage in the future if you haven't yet!

One Tree Hill Season 6 DVD Q&A

After I posted my review of the One Tree Hill Season 6 DVD, I received a few emails with questions about the Special Features, so I wanted to answer them all in a post. If you have any questions about the special features, feel free to email me before August 24th at melodysimpson@hollywoodthewriteway.com and the answers will be added here.

What's in the Gag Reel & are Hilarie & Chad featured prominently?
The gag reel is 4 minutes and 4 seconds long. A few fans were worried that this gag reel is not funny based on my review and since many believe that the gag reels in the past were not that funny...but don't lose hope. It's a good gag reel. It's way too short in my opinion. There were a few gag moments with Chad & Hilarie. There was a gag from the 1940s episode, yes. The gag reel starts out with Chad & Antwon at the basketball court and they are trying to make shots. Viewers also see Paul & Torrey DeVitto in Carrie's house that was the fake hospital room and there's a bug crawling on Paul, which was so funny! There's a gag where Sophia's shoe almost comes off when she's walking out of the record label Peyton owns. There's a gag where Bethany says "I never slept with anyone! Wait that's not my line." A small dancing montage it put together in the gag reel. There are also a few other gags in between all of this & it ends with Chad & James clapping and cheering!

Were there any unaired scenes with Hilarie & Chad? Were there any unaired scenes with James?
There is only 1 unaired scene with Chad & Hilarie and that is for the episode, "Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly." James was in 5 unaired scenes.

So there is no special feature devoted to Chad & Hilarie leaving the show?
I wish there was!

In the special feature devoted to following Chad, Bethany, and James directing...were they featured equally?
This special feature is 13 minutes and 6 seconds long and yes, they are all featured in an equal amount of time. Chad is featured first, then Bethany, then James.

The way you write makes you seem young, how old are you?
I am a young college student and that is all I will say about that. Although I tried to keep this review simple and fun since I know that there are a lot of younger viewers for this show. When I review the Fringe Season 1 DVD soon, there will be an entirely different tone.

What music is featured when you put the DVD in?
There is a nice simple instrumental and I do not know who composed it.

One Tree Hill Season 6 releases on DVD August 25, 2009.

Greek: Chapter 3 released on DVD earlier this week and with the weekend here, you can watch Seasons 1 & 2 on Hulu to catch up and then head on out to pick up your copy of the new DVD!

This set includes 10 episodes and follows the loves and lives of Casey (Spencer Grammer), Cappie (Scott Michael Foster), Rusty (Jacob Zachar), Rebecca (Dilshad Vadsaria), and their friends. One Tree Hill Season 6 DVD Review

As a huge One Tree Hill fan, I am so excited to review the One Tree Hill: The Complete Sixth Season brought to you by Warner Brothers!

Fun fact: One Tree Hill started its sixth season with the show’s highest rated premiere since Season 2 among its core demo! So you don't want to miss out on all of the drama in the Season 6 DVD, which comes out next week! Own it on DVD August 25, 2009!

Season 6 Original Air Date: 2008 – 2009
Season 6 DVD Release Date: August 25, 2009
7 Discs/24 Episodes/Approx. 1128 min. feature/Approx. 165 EC Runtime/Not Rated

During season six, the denizens of Tree Hill are faced with some of their biggest challenges. Handsome Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray) embarks on the journey of a lifetime with the woman he chose to love. Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) continues to work on his comeback as a professional athlete with ambitions to play in the NBA. Brooke’s (Sophia Bush) battle with her unscrupulous mother Victoria (Daphne Zuniga) over the enormously successful apparel line Clothes Over Bros. heats up. Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) continues to dream of success in the music business. Skills (Antwon Tanner) and Deb’s (Barbara Alyn Woods) hook-up threatens to become “un-hooked.” Mouth (Lee Norris) and Millicent (Lisa Goldstein) wrestle with leaving Tree Hill and Dan’s (Paul Johansson) life hangs in the balance.

This season really reminded me about why I love this show so much. The character development is strong, and the story lines are equally strong (well, not including the Nanny Carrie storyline). The season starts off with love in the air, a psycho, the death of a dear friend, family reconnecting, and so much more. Although what I find to be most interesting is Lucas's book going through the stages of being developed into a film. Even though the film is eventually not made, Lucas still has a baby on the way - and not figuratively speaking. It brings so much light into the season, Peyton & Lucas's relationship. They are almost as cute as Naley! The season ends with a newborn, plans for adoption, a reconciliation, and so much more. There is a stand alone episode that is easily a fan favorite, "We Three (My Echo, My Shadow & Me)." I also enjoyed all of the incredible music, especially from Kate Voegele. Each episode in the season is as interesting as the last...it reminds me of how incredible the first 3 seasons were. There are also an amazing group of directors this season, including a few of One Tree Hill's own lead actors. Aside from a very well woven story unfolding in 24 episodes, there is a great amount of special features on this DVD. There are unaired scenes from nine episodes, which for the most part are very simple and short scenes that did not deserve space in this one hour drama. Cast & crew give commentary for 2 episodes, both more informational rather than very entertaining, but there are a few laugh out loud moments and many fun facts along the way. Another special feature takes viewers behind the scenes in the episode, "We Three (My Echo, My Shadow and Me)." This feature is definitely one to watch and I consider it a favorite special feature of mine. My least favorite special feature was "Slammin’ with One Tree Hill" which was devoted to showcasing the sport, slamball. I am not big on sports, so I am biased on this. As mentioned above, a few of the lead actors stepped into the director's shoes and a special feature is devoted towards them. The feature follows Chad Michael Murray, Bethany Joy Galeotti and James Lafferty as they prepare for and shoot in their directorial debuts. This is one of my other favorite special features! These first time directors are followed, but their co-stars talk about working with them, so it's a fun feature to watch. Last but not least is a gag reel that is not as funny as past One Tree Hill gag reels, but still fun to watch nonetheless. Overall, I was pleased with the special features and this DVD as a whole. It is definitely worth the buy for anyone who calls them self a One Tree Hill fan. A more in depth review of all of the special features is below.

Special Features

Episode Commentaries:
There were commentaries for 2 episodes, "You Have to Be Joking (Autopsy of the Devil's Brain)" and "Searching for a Former Clarity." To say that I was highly disappointed that there was no commentary for "We Three (My Echo, My Shadow and Me)" is an understatement. Although with Jackson Brundage on commentary for one of the two episodes, I can't complain.
You Have to Be Joking (Autopsy of the Devil's Brain) - The commentary was done by Co-stars, James Lafferty, Jackson Brundage, Kate Voegele, and Stephen Colletti. The commentary also included executive producers Mark Schwahn and Joe Davola. I enjoyed this commentary a lot because Mark gave so much insight as to why certain things were the way they were...including less props and certain lighting in one scene, and what the initials J.S. and #12 really stand for. One episode was shot on Halloween and it was quite funny to find out who came to set with their costumes on. An interesting note that Mark made after James asked a question about Peyton's record label was that in the upcoming season, we will see Peyton's record label grow. Mark spoke the most, which is always great to hear. The was a great piece of commentary to watch for those who want to work in the entertainment business, because Mark has a lot to say. It's entertaining but there very few moments where you will laugh out loud. With that said, I still very much enjoyed this commentary.
Searching for a Former Clarity - The commentary was done by Co-stars, Sophia Bush, Daphne Zuniga, Kate Voegele, and Stephen Colletti (who does not appear in this episode). The commentary also included executive producers Mark Schwahn and Joe Davola. I loved how everyone, specifically Mark and Sophia talked about all of the technical things that everyone working on the show has to think about while we, the viewers only see the actors' performances.

Unaired Scenes:
Nine episodes included unaired scenes. In "Bridge Over Troubled Water," there were quite a few deleted scenes and the most enjoyable one was the scene with Peyton and her biological father. In the episode, "I Would For You," I really enjoyed the simplicity of this scene. However with the show only being in a one hour time slot, I can see why this was deleted. There were 2 episodes that had unaired scenes that I thought were actually already in the episode. Those scenes included Haley & Q's mom talking in "Things a Mama Don't Know" and Julian and Sam talking in "We Change, We Wait." Those scenes would have fit beautifully into these episodes and I am glad to be able to watch them whenever I want on DVD. The unaired scene that I would have absolutely loved to have seen in the episode was the one unaired scene for "Choosing My Own Way of Life." As you watch it, you will think, "Why oh why was this unaired?" I like watching unaired scenes because you get a great feel for where the show has not gone, what not do to when in the writer's room or director's chair, and so on. What would have been really nice would have been having commentary on why each of these scenes were deleted.

One Tree Hill Goes Back in Time:
This feature went behind the scenes in 6.11 "We Three (My Echo, My Shadow and Me)." This feature shows how the 1940's was recreated in Tree Hill. This feature was the most fun to watch because everyone and everything was outside of the box, from the writing, to the set, to the wardrobe...seeing everything come together from the construction, to paint, to the full design was fantastic. There is so much work put into every episode, but there was so much more put into this episode being that it was so incredibly different than anything this show has ever done before. This was an incredibly in depth look at this episode that every One Tree Hill fan will consider a favorite special feature!

Slammin’ with One Tree Hill:
This feature showcased the new sport of SlamBall, a cross between basketball, hockey and gymnastics. I was not familiar with the sport prior to One Tree Hill, so it was educational to see the coach coordinating everyone on set and James Lafferty discussing everything involved in the coordinating the sport for shooting.

One Tree Hill Celebrity Soundtrack:
This feature was dedicated to guest musical artists discussing their contributions to One Tree Hill. The first thing that I learned was that there are typically 7-10 songs in each episode. I had always wanted to know what the exact numbers were, so that was nice. Matthew Ryan, a composer for the show talked a lot with Mark Schwahn about what he had to offer to the show, which helps the viewer get a better grip on how powerful music is to a scene. It's amazing how music can trigger certain emotions. Grace Potter, who was also a composer for the show was in episode 6.07. Her take on the music was interesting since she had not followed the show prior to working with everyone. As a huge fan of Nada Surf, thanks to One Tree Hill, my favorite look into the composers was following Matthew Caws. It was amazing to see how these artists decide what melodies to use for each scene. What was also exciting to see, and very heartwarming was an in detail look at the USO concert for the troops that was featured in episode 6.10. Hilarie Burton got choked up talking about how thankful she was for everyone being so supportive and that just shows how powerful music is in One Tree Hill. Speaking of...when's the next soundtrack coming out?

One Tree Hill – The Director’s Debut: Following Chad Michael Murray, Bethany Joy Galeotti and James Lafferty:
I enjoyed the fact that this feature not only followed these first time directors, but also showed the opinions of the other actors. I specifically enjoyed what Ashley Rickards said when talking about Chad Michael Murray's directing time and what Sophia Bush said when talking about Bethany Joy Galeotti's directing time. Antwon Tanner's response to James Lafferty's directing time brought the laughs. You can tell that Chad, Bethany, and James were all so passionate and excited about directing and sharing that experience with the fans is what the One Tree Hill fandom is all about. I must say, this was one of my favorite special features.

Gag Reel:
The gag reel was fun to watch. Of all 6 seasons, it is not the funniest one to watch, but enjoyable nonetheless. Paul Johansson was the most entertaining in my opinion, especially in the scene with Torrey DeVitto. It was very important to have a few gag moments with Chad & Hilarie, so it was great to see a few of those! There were many trips and running into things, lots of cursing when members couldn't remember their lines, which was funny, and all in all a great roundup of memorable moments.
