DVD Review: Jennifer's Body

From Oscar winner, Diablo Cody comes a horror that will help you end 2009 with a bang! Yesterday, Jennifer's Body released on DVD and Blu-Ray, Unrated and with lots of bonus footage on the Blu-Ray!

Release Date: December 29, 2009
Run Time: 102 Minutes
Rating: R

In every school there’s one girl, every girl wants to be friends with…and every guy would die for. Megan Fox (Transformers) is hotter than hell as Jennifer, a gorgeous, seductive cheerleader who takes evil to a whole new level after she’s possessed by a sinister demon. Steamy action and gore galore ensue as the male student body succumbs to Jennifer's insatiable appetite for human flesh. Now it’s up to her best friend (Amanda Seyfried; Mamma Mia!) to stop the demonic diva’s reign of terror before it's too late!

Fueled by the satiric wit of Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody (Juno), the sexy horror directed by Karyn Kusama (Aeon Flux) features a strong supporting cast of young Hollywood stars including Adam Brody (“The O.C.”), Johnny Simmons (Hotel For Dogs) and Chris Pratt (Bride Wars) as well as J.K. Simmons (Juno) and Amy Sedaris (“Strangers With Candy”).

Jennifer’s Body brings the horror and comedy that teens will definitely enjoy. The storyline is fantastic and while the execution may not have been as fantastic, this film will definitely have a cult following as it as clever dialogue, sex, blood and gore, and more. Now while there is clever dialogue, at times the slang is, well, not even out dated but simply made up…which is where the execution fails as this film is not a timeless horror. Instead of trying to be cool and appeal to the teenage crowd, Jennifer’s Body should have focused more on character development and more realistically showing certain aspects of scenes, like Jennifer throwing up in Needy's kitchen as well as the starting of the fire at the bar. Director, Karyn Kusama mentioned in the commentary that a certain scene in the film “went beyond realism” but it is safe to say that for the majority of the film. As far as the cast goes...this film was well casted and it is safe to say that J.K. Simmons had the best lines in the film. Viewers can tell that Adam Brody really had fun playing his character. Amanda Seyfried is a much stronger actress than Megan Fox however their chemistry was perfect. Really though, this film only touched the surface of what goodness could have really shined through. While not a five star classic horror, it is pretty wild and worth the watch if you want to be slightly scared and get a good laugh in here and there.

Special Features:

Commentary - The first commentary for the theatrical version of the film was conducted by Director Karyn Kusama and Writer Diablo Cody. It's a very straight-forward commentary that Kusama dominates, while Diablo chimes in on occasion...not enough. It was a bit of a dry conversation. Karyn Kusama gives much of a technical commentary…and much more of one in the second commentary that she conducts by herself for the extended cut which is 5 minutes longer. On the extended commentary, she explains how this version better reflects Diablo Cody’s original script and why these scenes were cut down. Though this commentary seems to simply pick out the scenes rather than have viewers watch the entire film all over again, which is a much better option. Overall, it would have been much better if there was only one commentary for the extended version with both Cody and Kusama (and possibly one or two members of the cast) and if there were more features on the DVD as a whole.

DVD Review: The Secret Life of the American Teenager Volume Three

The Secret Life of the American Teenager Volume Three released on DVD last week and this season is a must have, as many have to deal with the consequences of what they did over the summer, relationships are tested, and so much more!

Release Date: December 22, 2009
Run time: 516 minutes
Episodes: 12 episodes
Rating: TV 14, Bonus Features Not Rated

The teen drama that has everyone talking is better than ever in its inspiring third season. Rediscover all the excitement and emotion of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, the critically acclaimed original ABC Family series. It’s a whole new school year as Amy (Shailene Woodley) tries to juggle motherhood, school, work and family, and Grace (Megan Park) and Jack (Greg Finley) take their relationship to the next level.

This volume of The Secret Life of the American Teenager is full of even more drama than the first season! Amy juggles motherhood, work, and school while also dealing with her family who is…surprise, surprise, just as messed up as she is. Amy is not only a new and very protective mother, but she seemed to have made a 180 degree turn with her attitude, as she is extremely uptight…not the Amy we all knew in the first season. She’s not the only one with issues though as Grace faces a tragic family tragedy, Adrian is trying to bring her parents back together, and there’s so much more packed into this season…it’s very easy to become addicted to this show. Secret Life is not afraid to share the emotions of a new teen mother that aren’t glamorized in American popular culture. Secret Life does not refrain from real life sex talk and does not censor themselves as much as one would think for an ABC Family show, which is great. The show appeals to many audiences and has the perfect balance of drama and comedy…though that is to be expected with show creator, Brenda Hampton (7th Heaven). Lots more layers of the characters are shown in this season, which will leave you wanting more in the end, so make sure to pick up your copy to relive this roller coaster of a season.

Bonus Features:

Hat Chat – Cast members Shailene, Daren, Ken, Megan, Greg, Francia and India answer fun questions that they draw from a hat. This was quite an enjoyable feature to watch! The backdrop was on set but behind the scenes and the actors did not interact with each other, as they drew questions and answered the questions individually rather than as a pair or an entire group. While it would have been even more entertaining if the cast had answered in pairs or as a group, this was still fun to see each of the cast members in a relaxed environment and not in character. Viewers find out lots about the cast, including...Megan is in the band Frank And Derol. This is a great feature, too bad it stops there on this DVD because fans would love to have seen more features!

A Sneak Peak of what's next for Secret Life and the "Pilot" episode of the new ABC Family series, Make It Or Break It can also be seen on the DVD.

The Secret Life of the American Teenager returns to ABC Family January 4, 2010 at 8/7c.

Get To Know Actress & Comedienne, Gayla Johnson

You've seen her as Janet, Rob Lowe’s right hand on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters, you've seen her share the stage with well known comedians including Chris Rock, Marc Curry, and Sammy Shore, and soon you will be able to buy her first comedy album from New Wave Entertainment. Along with the comedy album, actress and comedienne, Gayla Johnson has an upcoming yet-to-be-titled Comedy Central project in the works and to find out more about her experiences, keep reading after the photo!

What was the audition process like for Brothers & Sisters?
At the time, I didn't know what role I was auditioning for, it was a general audition, in a Casting Director’s workshop. The casting director made notes, thanked everyone and left. A year later, they called me!

What did you learn from the cast and crew while being on set of Brothers & Sisters?
I saw how organized and comfortable everyone was with everyone else. It really is a family, including the crew, makeup and wardrobe. They are professionals committed to the success of the show, rewarding relationships play a vital part. They joke, play around, make fun of themselves, and cater the table reads; i.e. Sushi, Chinese food, Indian food, etc. But when it's time to work, without friction, everyone knows his or her place.

You have shared the stage with many well known comedians, what has been your favorite experience so far?
I was set to go up following Chris Rock at the Comedy Store in London. Chris walks in to the green room and everything changes -- he’s now going up next -- he's pacing, thinking of what to say. I tell him, “Just be Chris. It hasn't failed you yet!” He performs to a standing ovation and then leaves the club. They introduce me. My opening line is, “Hi, I’m Chris Rock... in drag.”

What's your advice for minorities who want to become stand-up comedians?
Do not fear the white man’s world. Because deep down inside, he fears yours, because he doesn't understand it. If a person would truly reveal and share their heritage, it would not only open people's minds and educate, but empower members of that culture.

When doing stand up, are there any topics that you find audiences react better to and not the best to?
Anything goes in Stand-up, it's all in how well it's executed. For me, I keep in mind 2 techniques I've learned from my husband, Greg Dean... "The most important thing about stand-up comedy, is the relationship with the audience.” When the audience can tell you care about their reaction and you're willing to adjust your show to suit them, they relax, start to trust the comic and are then, free to respond. If you ignore their reaction and they don't dig your jokes, they stop laughing, lock-up, get defensive and you loose them. I simply just DROP the material if it's get a negative response and move into something else. Also, "mind the hurt line.” That is to say, when the comic says/does something and someone appears to be truly hurt by it, the show quickly turns into drama. The audience will stop laughing and become concerned for the hurt individual, the attention gets divided. Generally, regardless of my material, as long as I read my audience, take care of them and stay in a positive relationship, I can be successful.

Where is your favorite place to perform in Los Angeles and why?
Ontario Improv... I like the stage, the layout, the space, the history. Without meaning to endorse concepts of 'Feng Shui,' I think it's got balance and positive energy. I've always had amazing performances there and feel most at home.

What are your upcoming projects?
I'm producing a comedy album with New Wave Entertainment for National and International Distribution. It's due out next year. I am also preparing for “A Gayla Event: A One Woman Comedy Special,” scheduled for February 2010.

Can you tell us what your favorite holiday traditions are?
Listening to holiday songs, decorating the house, the tree and me, pulling all my holiday sweaters out of the basement, Kris Kringle, shopping, watching holiday specials, getting/sending cards, family gatherings, friendly get-togethers! Anything Pumpkin!

DVD Review: Passing Strange

On January 12, 2010 IFC Films releases Passing Strange The Movie, Spike Lee’s filmed record of the acclaimed, Tony Award-winning musical drama which closed on July 20, 2008.

Passing Strange The Movie tells the semi-autobiographical story of a young black man, identified simply as Youth, who leaves behind his middle-class, church-ruled upbringing in mid-1970s Los Angeles to travel to Europe in search of his artistic and personal identity, or what he calls “the real.” Misadventures with sex, drugs, politics and art await him in uninhibited Amsterdam and hyper-militant Berlin, leading to a hard-won understanding of where he came from and where his life may take him.

Passing Strange is unlike any other Broadway show that I have ever seen. At first it seems like a strange Broadway experimentation but in the end, it really is a raw and exciting rock n roll autobiography of an African-American singer-songwriter in search of identity. It’s the 1970s when Stew (Daniel Breaker) rebels against his family and goes to Europe for more clarity. There are many running themes, including the exploration of faith, sex, drugs, and reality which all of us can relate to. The original cast is outstanding and full of energy in every moment. Each and every actor has a character with a rich personality, which makes for some memorable one liners. The writing is witty and sharp, the music is a moving mixture of rock, funk and gospel, and the structure of the play is informal and yet still quite comfortable. Passing Strange takes viewers on quite an adventure, much more of an emotional roller coaster than expected. As for the directing, the close-ups of the cast and band members gives fans the best seat in the house though if you want to feel what the crowd feels, shots of the audience dancing during a musical number brings that vibe too. It was also quite fun to see what the Passing Strange family did during their brief intermission. This musical was a wonderfully captured on film and one can only hope that Passing Strange becomes even more popular with the release of the DVD.

Bonus Features:

Stew & Heidi Interview
- Spike Lee interviews Passing Strange creators Stew and Heidi Rodewald on stage about the journey of Passing Strange, what it is like performing on stage, and making an impact on Broadway. It would have been something to appreciate much more if the questions were more specific and the creators talked more about creating Passing Strange, from writing all of the drafts, to casting, to the creation and changes in the music from off Broadway to Broadway, etc…so hopefully much more will be discussed in Stew & Heidi’s future projects.

Last Show Cast Backstage - This feature takes viewers backstage as 5 of the cast members are preparing their voices for their last show and end up jamming out. Afterwords, one of the cast members gives a heartfelt speech detailing her gratitude and love to the cast, which really makes viewers come to appreciate Passing Strange all the more.

Teaching De’adre the Bolex - The title of this feature speaks for itself and it’s actually not all that interesting, probably because I don’t have a bolex and can’t learn how to roll right along with her. Perhaps this might still be of interest to others, but I’ll pass.

Heidi Gives A Tour - The co-creator of Passing Strange gives fans a behind the scenes tour of backstage, on stage, and below the stage along with a few interesting fun facts about what goes on during intermission and the theater. This was a great feature although I must admit, I was waiting for Heidi to enter the dressing rooms of the cast!

Last Makeup Session - The camera zeroes in on Daniel Breaker, Stew, and other cast members as they converse with their makeup artists during the last makeup session...a lot of discussion takes place in a makeup session, so you might be surprised to see how much more of an inside look this feature gives than any other. What a fabulous feature. If only there were a camera in the makeup room during every show.

Passing Strange The Movie will become available on DVD January 12, 2010.

Passing Strange the Original Broadway Cast Recording is available now.

Fred Melamed Talks About A Serious Man

As you know, A Serious Man, a new film by the Coen brothers will be receiving the Robert Altman Award at The Spirit Awards this March and in early celebration on Hollywood the Write Way, Fred Melamed who plays Sy Ableman in the film sat down to talk about the film.

What did you learn from the Coen brothers while working with them for A Serious Man?

I am a writer as well as an actor, (and an aspiring director), so I actually learned a great many things from them. I view them as brilliant writers first, who then make brilliant films from what they have written. In their writing, I observed a tremendously elegant economy. There is not one extra word, scene or joke. Every line is true to the nature of the character saying it, and moves the story forward. Nothing added unless implicitly necessary. This includes sections that some might regard as parenthetical, like the Yiddish stuff at the beginning, or the Story Of The Goy’s Teeth. As an actor, I learned the great value of relaxation. It gives you true freedom in your choices. And that if your character is essentially true, you can be very broad in your strokes without it becoming burlesque. As a wannabe director, I learned to spend a great deal of time and care in casting, and to cast people you have deep faith in. And the more thorough your pre-production, the more relaxed and free you can be on the set.

When identifying yourself with your character, how does that help and hurt developing and getting into character?
I always think of the character as being me. But me wearing a “coat”, which may be a different way of speaking, moving or regarding other people. To me, acting is pretending, just like kids playing, only you pretend as if it were really, really real. I think of each character as having an “essential gesture” as Michael Chekhov put it. For example, Sy Ableman is a manipulator, a Machiavellian villain, but his way is to make everyone relax and accept his suggestion (which he also believes) that he is only trying to do what is best for everybody. I thought it would be interesting to try to play him as a constant “massager” of people; someone who gets what he wants by convincing everyone that they can relax and let him make the decisions, and that all will be well. That is his essential gesture. But the character is always me.

As far as being attached to the film, was it the story or the characters that drew you in to A Serious Man?
When I started reading the script, I immediately thought it was just brilliant, and wanted to be a part of it. Then, when I realized how great a role I was being offered in Sy Ableman, I got so excited. An actor is very lucky to have a chance to play a role like that any time, (the plum role of the movie, as far as I am concerned), and with the Coens, no less!

How many re-writes were there about and how did that affect the way you portrayed your character?
Except for some very minor changes, mostly for practical reasons, (name changes, etc.), there were no rewrites! There was a situation where the motel that Larry and Uncle Arthur move into in the original script was called The Jolly Roger. While they were scouting locations, the Coens found a real period-correct motel called the Aqua City (it had a pool). By changing the name of the motel in the screenplay to the Aqua City, the Coens reckoned they could save a few thousand dollars on creating a sign or a CGI shot. On the first day of rehearsal, I begged them to change the name back to the Jolly Roger, as I thought it was infinitely better, stronger. After some discussion between themselves, they had a sign built and changed it back. I don’t remember any actor ever asking anything else.

What were the most entertaining and most challenging scenes to shoot?
The first scene shot on the first day was the one in Embers restaurant, where Judith (the phenomenal Sari Lennick) and I bully Larry into moving into the Jolly Roger. I had just become friends with Michael Stuhlbarg, who is an extremely gifted actor, and the three of us had rehearsed a bit the night before on our own. We were all very relaxed, and looking at both Sari and Michael as I groped his hand and counted to ten, silently, was extremely entertaining. I was near breaking up many times, and Michael actually did once or twice. We had an utter blast making A Serious Man. For me, there weren’t many hard scenes to shoot. The nearest was the dream sequence, where I had to be physically rough with Michael. It was only difficult because I genuinely like him so much, and I’m so much bigger than he is, plus he is so convincing as an actor that it really looked as though he was getting hurt. But he was fine.

Can we expect to see you on Broadway again in the future?
I haven’t appeared on stage in quite a long time and I don’t have any immediate plans to do so, but I’m always interested in going back.

What are your upcoming projects?
I just finished my first episode on Law & Order as sagacious (and recurring) Judge Bertram Hill. I also completed an interesting pilot, yet unnamed, about a gay teenage runaway hustler, played by Lonny Ross (of 30 Rock fame), who befriends a somewhat embittered, widowed chess genius (me), in Central Park. It is all about their unusual, contentious friendship.

And I have written a movie, which I hope to direct myself, titled “(Also, a Villager)” It is fiction, but largely based on the true story of a friend of mine, a cartographic authority and map dealer of great renown, who was famous for having built the collections of several wealthy collectors and venerable institutions. After 20 years as an extremely respected and well-liked insider, he was caught stealing from the Beinecke Library at Yale. As the evidence against him mounted, he ultimately admitted to having stolen more than 5 million dollars worth of maps and rare documents from various collections. He was, by far, the most brazen and prolific map thief of all time. The British Library, in its sentencing brief to his judge, called him, “The most reprehensible cultural criminal of the modern era.”

What is so interesting about him, is that although he is understandably vilified in map collecting circles, it is just about impossible to get anybody to say anything negative about him at the personal level; a nearly universally loved, admired human being. He used much of the money to do what he thought would help preserve a better way of life. His friends, his town, his family. He had had a kind of pathological need to be a kind of magician in people’s lives, to help them in whatever way he sensed they needed, with little regard for fame or gratitude. He wrecked his own life, and the lives of many others, because he believed that if he ceased his role as this kind of magic rescuer, he would literally disappear; that he could have no life as an ordinary man.

What are your favorite holiday traditions?
Well, because I have twin seven-year-old boys, I enjoy the gift giving stuff a great deal. We do both Hanukkah and Christmas, so it is a costly, though extremely pleasing proposition. We also like to watch 4 movies together during the holidays. The first is It’s A Wonderful Life, that eternal chestnut. We watch James Stewart’s George Bailey in it. It was just after he came back from WWII, and didn’t know if he’d still have a career. It is an incredibly modern, moving performance. Second is the 1935 Selznick David Copperfield, with Freddy Bartholomew and W. C. Fields, a movie more full of Christmas, love and heartache than anything produced in my lifetime. The third is Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol. If you haven’t seen this, see it. And last, my favorite motion picture of all time, David Lean’s Great Expectations. Note, particularly, the work of Francis Sullivan, the greatest portly character actor who has ever lived, as the redoubtable Mr. Jaggers, the barrister.

It probably goes without saying that I enjoy the potato pancakes, delicious hams and so forth that maddeningly turn up at this time of year. But I am attempting to be a good lad now, and may have to watch some of the films I just mentioned while sweating away on the exercise bike.

The Spirit Awards will air live on IFC March 5, 2010 at L.A. Live at 8pm PST/11pm EST.

DVD Review: Glee Volume 1 Road To Sectionals

On December 29, 2009 Glee Volume 1 Road To Sectionals releases on DVD in North America and the release will mark another incredible success for the show, its last for the year of 2009. What a pleasant way to end the new year!

Release Date: December 29, 2009
Run Time: 580 Minutes
Rating: Not Rated

From Ryan Murphy, the creator of “Nip/Tuck,” comes GLEE, a new comedy for the aspiring underdog in all of us. The series follows an optimistic teacher, Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), who – against all odds and a malicious cheer leading coach – attempts to save McKinley High’s Glee Club from obscurity, while helping a group of aspiring underdogs realize their true star potential. It’s a tall order when the brightest stars of the group include Kurt (Chris Colfer), a soprano who hits a high note in fashion; Mercedes (Amber Riley), a larger-than-life diva with a voice to match; Artie (Kevin McHale), a geeky guitarist who rocks and rolls; and Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), a punk rocker who hides behind her stutter and blue hair extensions.

Will’s only hope lies with two true talents: Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), a self-proclaimed star who is convinced that MySpace and show choir and are her tickets to fame; and Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), the popular high school quarterback with movie star looks who must protect his reputation from his holier-than-thou girlfriend and “Cheerios” head cheerleader, Quinn (Dianna Agron), and his arrogant football teammate, PUCK (Mark Salling).

Will is determined to do whatever it takes to make Glee great again, but his only ally is fellow teacher and germaphobe Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays). Everyone else around him thinks he’s nuts – from his tough-as-nails wife Terri Schuester (Jessalyn Gilsig) to McKinley’s scheming cheer leading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) – but he’s out to prove them wrong.

Glee
is one of the most original and creative shows on television today. The writing is superb, very clever and witty. The acting is fantastic and the majority of the leads are very strong newcomers to television, which might surprise you given their amount of talent! Throughout the past 13 episodes there have been few general story lines and many sub plots that have so much potential to make the show even brighter if those sub plots were consistent. The characters are so well crafted and layered, leaving viewers yearning to learn more about each and every one of them. There is so much to love, it is hard not to want more in every way from this show which has the perfect balance of comedy, drama, and music. The music is fabulous, taking on covers from everyone including Beyonce to Neil Diamond! What an incredible variety of song choice and it can only get better from here. It’s about time a musical dramedy has taken over the homes of millions around the world. This show has everything viewers could ever want all set in a small high school in Ohio…and this is just the beginning!

Extras:

Welcome to McKinley! (5:03 Minutes) - This was a very smart and equally comedic feature to include on the DVD, as Principal Figgins welcomes eighth graders into McKinley High. Figgins tours the school in a sense, showcasing the music room and gym locker room for football, as well as discusses the guidelines for lockers and such. Viewers meet Principal Figgins' secretary, Donna and also find out that Principal Figgins grew up on a farm. That's not all. There is lots to learn and laugh at in this informational introduction into McKinley High that you won't want to miss. Iqbal Theba is a fantastic actor and was a great sport, literally in this feature. Go Titans!

Glee Music Video (2:46 Minutes) - This music video is the cast version of "Somebody To Love" and features all of the main cast members, none of them singing directly towards the camera, as this is moreso an extended promo including bits of the Pilot with no dialogue and more lyrics on the screen in the classic bright Glee colors and font all throughout. This is a great music video to watch and look back on the show in its beginning stages of promotion. How far it has come! Although it boggles my mind why there isn't a section in the special features where viewers can watch their favorite Glee performances without searching through the episodes for those songs...many of them have the "music video" vibe much more than this, such as "My Life Would Suck Without You." It would have also been nice for a music video to have been created that incorporated behind the scenes footage, promotional footage from the Gleek tour and such, bloopers, etc... Let's hope something along these lines can be seen in the Volume 2 DVD.

Full Length Audition Pieces - Rachel's "On My Own" (3:17 Minutes) audition and Mercedes' "Respect"(59 Seconds) audition for the glee club both made the cut on the DVD! Gleeks have seen Rachel's full audition, as it was available for free on iTunes for quite some time. However it was quite enjoyable to say the least to see Mercedes' entire audition. While we heard the applause at the end, I wouldn't be surprised if she was given a standing ovation. Though I wonder why only these two were featured on the DVD, as I would have loved to have seen the other glee club members' audition pieces, especially those we have yet to see at all (Mike, Matt, Arte). Broadway fans will be thrilled that Rachel's piece was included and everyone will be thrilled to see Mercedes sing like there is no tomorrow. She's got our respect!

Fox Movie Channel Casting Session (11:59 Minutes) - Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, Brad Falchuk, various Fox head execs, and various cast members discuss the casting process of Glee, starting with the pitching of the show. Chairman of 20th Century Fox, Gary Newman, Chairman of 20th Century Fox TV, Dana Walden, Entertainment President of Fox Broadcasting, Kevin Reilly, and Casting Director of Glee, Robert Ulrich also talk about the pitching of the show as well as casting Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, and Chris Colfer. Fans get to see audition footage from Kevin, Lea, Jenna, and both see and hear audition footage from Lea, Cory, and Chris. The latter discuss their casting process and for those Glee fans who have not been involved in the fandom, you’ll find out that the first person Fox saw during auditions was Lea (and Lea has a funny story to tell) and there was originally an Indian character but he was soon scrapped and replaced with Kurt after Chris Colfer’s audition. Another fun fact to learn is how Cory’s audition did not include any singing! There’s lots to enjoy and learn in this feature, though it would have been even better had more audition footage been seen and heard from many more of the cast members. Perhaps to make up for what’s missing, in the next volume the cast members can talk about how their characters have evolved from the audition process to filming the back nine episodes. This was still a very enjoyable feature, especially having the Fox execs speak on the success that they saw in Glee from the beginning!

Deconstructing Glee With Ryan Murphy (2:50 Minutes) - Listen to the Gleek Squad Podcast episode dedicated to discussion on this special and others featured in the limited edition of the Director's Cut of the Pilot.

Dance Boot Camp (3:03 Minutes) - Listen to the Gleek Squad Podcast episode dedicated to discussion on this special and others featured in the limited edition of the Director's Cut of the Pilot.

More Extras on the DVD include the exclusive videos that have been released on Fox.com over the past few months including Jane Lynch A to Glee (54 Seconds), Meet Jane Lynch (1:05 Minutes), 5 Things You Don't Know About Jayma (41 Seconds), 7 Things You Don't Know About Cory (1:01 Minutes), 6 Things You Don't Know About Amber (59 Seconds), 7 Things You Don't Know About Chris (43 Seconds), and my favorite...the Flip Video Diaries (17:11 Minutes) of Jane Lynch, Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Cory Monteith, Kevin McHale, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, and Dianna Agron. My concern for the Volume 2 DVD…hopefully the special features will not be jam packed with footage many fans have already seen on Glee’s official website. This show is one of the most original and creative shows on television right now and while it is appreciated that these online videos can be cherished on the DVD, there is lots to explore in special features, so much more Glee goodness is expected in Volume 2! All of these extras will be discussed in much greater detail in the next episode of Gleek Squad Podcast, so make sure to subscribe on iTunes to get all of the latest episodes!

Album Review: Norah Jones The Fall

On November 17th, Norah Jones released her fourth studio album, The Fall. This multiple Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter worked with producer Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings of Leon) and the album features Norah’s new band members and songwriting collaborations with Ryan Adams, Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, and Jesse Harris. The Fall brings Norah’s own guitar playing front and center.

Since coming on the scene in 2002, Jones’ has sold a collective 36 million albums worldwide. Her three studio albums, 2002’s eight-time Grammy Award-winning Come Away With Me, 2004’s Feels Like Home, and 2007’s Not Too Late have each topped the Billboard top 200 album charts in the U.S. and gone to No. 1 around the world. All three have been certified multi-platinum, while Come Away With Me has been certified diamond.

Norah wrote nearly all of the songs that are on the album in the past two years and a very interesting fact, she plays mostly guitar on this album. “I actually write more on guitar than I do on piano,” she says. “It just felt more natural for me to play it on these songs.” The first single, “Chasing Pirates” showcases Norah's sultry vocals and is the introduction to an album that also showcases Norah's experimenting with different sounds.

Chasing Pirates starts off the album and it is no secret why this song was chosen as the first single, as it is definitely the most mainstream on the album. But that’s where it stops as far as mainstream goes. And although Norah’s soulful voice and thought provoking and relatable lyrics about the end of relationships have not changed this album is quite different from Norah’s previous works. The Fall is on different territory. It’s an unraveling experimentation for Norah as she explores alternative rock as opposed to stripped down piano performances. Though this could take some Norah fans out of their comfort zone, this is not a major departure from what you’ve heard before and you’ll love it as Norah plays the guitar wonderfully, many of the tracks are upbeat, and the lyrics will help you unwind. It really depends on musical preference when it comes to deciding if you’ll fall for this album more than her previous work. No matter, Norah’s one of a kind and fans will come away listening to a successful step into a different direction that will only get better from here.

Advance Review: Worst Cooks in America

On Sunday, January 3rd, 2010 at 10pm ET/PT, the new reality challenge cooking show Worst Cooks in America premieres on The Food Network.

Twelve of the most hopeless cooks in the country will compete in a high-stakes elimination series in Worst Cooks in America. At stake for the last two standing is the chance to cook for a panel of esteemed culinary critics and win the grand prize of $25,000. The winner will be revealed during the finale on Monday, February 1st at 10pm ET/PT. The five-week series will put the “recruits” through a culinary boot camp led by two acclaimed chefs: Anne Burrell, host of Food Network’s Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, and Beau MacMillan, executive chef at elements in Phoenix.

In the first episode, viewers are introduced to the contestants of this show who were nominated by their families and friends as the worst cook in America! The looks on all of the contestants faces when they found out how they were brought into this competition was quite humorous to say the least. The comedy doesn't stop there, as viewers will find out the twists in the rules for the competition, more about the contestants as they attempt to duplicate the dish that their team leader Chef has cooked, and present those dishes to those leaders, Chef Burrell and Chef MacMillan. Viewers start out watching 24 contestants but it is soon cut down to 12 contestants, 2 teams, and one pair of really bad cooks facing elimination after the duplicate dishes are created.

The idea of this show is fantastic however the execution...it just seems a bit rushed to have people who don't know how to cook at all try to make Tuscan Fish Stew and Poached Tiger Prawn. First, what average family casually cooks those meals at home? The first round should have been a more simple meal, so that viewers could connect better with the contestants. The show should really build up towards the more challenging meals. Instead, it seems everyone is a lost puppy faced with a round intending for no immediate success, moreso just a hot mess. Was this round just to emphasize how bad these cooks are? We trust that they are bad, as the title of the show speaks for itself so getting to the next point... It was extremely uncalled for when one of the chefs threw a fit because one of the contestants overused the saffron, or some type of herb. The chefs need to give these new cooks a cooking 101 class before getting angry at them for things that they are ignorant to. Build these people up instead of tearing them down after giving no direction at all in the first place. Lastly, when the Chefs are tasting each of the contestants dishes, the first few times after they have both said something along the lines of, "This is really bad" it is funny, but after that just becomes redundant. While the show definitely has potential to become very entertaining and even more resourceful, at this point it seems like the show needs to toss out a few ingredients, add some new ones, and then I can truly enjoy this week by week.

Skateland at Sundace Film Festival

In case you haven't heard, I am thrilled to mention that Skateland will premiere at the Sundace Film Festival which takes place January 21-31, 2010!

It’s 1983, and Skateland, the roller rink and local hangout of a small town, is becoming a fading memory of an earlier time, when disco and roller-skating were king. The party scene is getting stale, and 19-year-old Ritchie's romantic life is as cloudy as his future. He struggles to make sense of it all, and decisions do not come easily to the carefree young man. When tragedy strikes his friends and family, Ritchie must face the music—and make the biggest decision of his life.

Without the benefit of a studio budget or name casting, Anthony Burns and Brandon Freeman capture the '80s in startling detail. The result: a cinematic scrapbook of a time and place, a visceral visual, and an aural experience that reclaims the decade for those of us lucky enough to have lived through it once. While the atmosphere is time specific, the themes of the joys and pains of growing up are universal.

I have been following the film as best I can throughout the year, conducting interviews with actress, Haley Ramm as well as co-writer and executive producer, Brandon Freeman. Stay tuned for more coverage soon!

When did you start songwriting?
My first memories of songwriting were probably when I was 7 or 8 on a "Little Tikes" toy piano. I started trying to figure it out again in high school, but didn't really write anything decent until about 2003, when I finished my first complete song called "Love You".

Do enjoy writing by yourself or co-writing more?
Co-writing is tricky for me. I am just starting to dabble in the whole "same room" co-writing scene. Right now I am definitely more productive writing on my own. I am just able to focus better. But I hope that with more experience I will come to love both ways equally.

What has been the most challenging song to write that fans have heard?
Probably that "Love You" song, which is not on the EP but I play at shows. Like I said, it was the first song I wrote all the way through, and it took about a year of marinating in my mind to come up with a chorus that I thought did the verses justice. Doesn't usually take that long to finish a song anymore. I've learned a lot since then.

So what are some tips you have for song writing?
There is certainly much more for me to learn here, but this is what I have figured out so far. In my case, the music I've been working on for myself and for others has been in the pop category. Its really just taken a lot of listening to other songs and figuring out what it is that makes that song successful. I don't mean copying. I mean studying the structure and noting key elements and methods that are used to bring a song to life. Once you figure out HOW to write a song, its up to you to dig in and figure out what you are trying to say and say it in a fresh and unique way. My good friend Rupert Hine always says that "the best song that you can write is a song that ONLY you can write."

What do you do about writer's block?
Writer's block is the worst, but I've learned that if I stick with it an idea eventually comes. I hate settling for less than what I want in a line, so as agonizing as writer's block is, the reward of fighting through it and getting where you want to be makes it all worth it.

What instruments do you want to learn how to play?
Lap steel. Those things are so cool. And maybe I am overestimating myself here, but I think that if I locked myself in a room with a cello for a good amount of time I could figure that thing out.

What was the first song you learned how to play on guitar?
Wow. That would probably have to be... "MMMBOP." Three chords made that one feasible for me.

What was your first guitar?
My first guitar was a Fender classical. Got it for Christmas.I knew it was coming because I "accidentally" went rummaging through my mom's closet where she kept all the presents and saw it there in all its glory.

Any guitar tips for beginners?
Just stick with it. Its frustrating and painful for a while, but once you reach the other side you've got this amazing song-making machine at your disposal. You'll be glad you put in the time, trust me.

What stage are you at with the album?
Writing and demoing. There is no official date or even label that is set to put out my next album. I've just been working in the studio a lot, trying to figure out exactly what I want my next body of work to sound like. I think you can expect to hear a more mature, less obvious record by the time its finished.

I love Civalias. What are the important aspects of a good stage name?
You definitely want to have it sound like an STD or an erectile dysfunction drug or both. People tell me I've nailed that part. To be honest, I have no idea what makes a good band or project name. I just tried to pick something that was a bit mysterious but really meant something to me. Above all I think it just has to sound cool.

Is anybody else in your family musically talented?
Yes! I've got a very musical family. My grandma plays the viola and I think about 9 other instruments. Then I've got aunts and uncles and cousins that are all amazing musicians. I learned how to sing harmonies as a kid by sitting by my mom and dad in church and listening to them sing.

Would you ever do a collaboration song with any singers on YouTube?
I'm not on the look out for anyone to collaborate with, but if the opportunity presented itself I might give it a go.

Can we expect another cover with you and Amy Kuney?
That would be fun! I love Amy. We went to college together. I remember listening to her EP in her dorm room when I first met her. The songs and production were just light years ahead of anything that any of us other aspiring musicians had at that time. I was really blown away. She is very talented. I'd love to do another song with her.

Which one of your musical influences would you like to sing with?
I wouldn't feel right singing with any of my musical heroes. I think in my head I'd be trying to listen to them but would just hear my own voice and that would ruin it for me. I think it would be more fun for me to be sitting in the front row at a Radiohead show and have Thom Yorke pause to tell me that he thinks I'm awesome.

How have Arizona and LA effected you creatively?
Living in LA can be a double edged sword when it comes to writing. The same excitement and activity that is constantly surrounding you can really motivate you and bring out your best, but it can also be overwhelming and distracting. Its always nice to visit home in AZ and clear my head.

What do you like the most and least about the music scene in LA?
I love that there is always something going on. On any given night you can go out and catch a great act. That also means that its harder to make a name for yourself in LA than in other places, but I don't really consider that a bad thing. I enjoy the competition of the music scene. It makes the accomplishments more rewarding.

The Back-up Plan Trailer

Check out the trailer for the comedy The Back-up Plan featuring Jennifer Lopez and Alex O’Loughlin, slated to release on April 23, 2010.

After years of dating, Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) has decided waiting for the right one is taking too long. Determined to become a mother, she commits to a plan, makes an appointment and decides to go it alone. On the day of her artificial insemination, Zoe meets Stan (Alex O’Loughlin) – a man with real possibilities.

Trying to nurture a budding relationship and hide the early signs of pregnancy becomes a comedy of errors for Zoe and creates confusing signals for Stan. When Zoe nervously reveals the reason for her unpredictable behavior, Stan commits fully and says he’s in. Never before has love seen a courtship where a wild night of sex involves three in a bed – Stan, Zoe and the ever-present massive pregnancy pillow. Or, where “date night” consists of being the “focal point” at a near-stranger’s water birth which does for kiddie pools what “Jaws” did for swimming in the ocean. The real pregnancy test comes when both of them realize they really don’t know each other outside of hormonal chaos and birth preparations. With the nine month clock ticking, both begin to experience cold feet. Anyone can fall in love, get married and have a baby but doing it backwards in hyper-drive could be proof positive that they were made for each other.

Starring: Jennifer Lopez, Alex O'Loughlin and Eric Christian Olsen
Written by: Kate Angelo
Directed By: Alan Poul
Produced By: Todd Black, Jason Blumentahl, Steve Tisch
Executive Producer: Rodney Liber

Films: Official Best Of Fest

If you love films, you will want to know about "The Best Films You've Never Seen." The Official Best of Fest, an international posse of film curators, who manage to see the majority of the 25,000 films made every year, have launched a series called "The Best Films You've Never Seen." These compilations are categorized, not by genre but by the experience of watching the film or the company you watch it with.

They include: Award-winning films that Inspire, Make You Laugh, Award-winning films about Real People, Romance, and Award-winning films for Family, Kids, Dog Lovers, Fathers Sons & Brothers, and Chick Flicks For A Girls Night In!

This compilation is a true celebration of the good independent films that the majority of people never see. Indie Filmmaker and Founder Rick Stevenson says, "99% of Hollywood Films are already made available to the public while 99% of Indie films get ignored." Stevenson also says that Official Best of Fest aims to "help a quality starved public, junk-food fed audience get cinematic nourishment."

After watching a sampler of this compilation over the past month, I have come to find some incredible short films and I cannot wait to see more from many of these writers, directors, and actors. These films are perfect to watch on your downtime over the holidays and into the new year, so keep reading below for my reviews of many of the films featured. Refresh this page over the weekend as I continue to add my mini reviews of each of these 14 films that I have seen in The Official Best of Fest Sampler.

Films:

Full Disclosure (18 Minutes) - This 2005 short film featuring Judy Greer and Brent Sexton and written/directed by Douglas Horn is the best romantic comedy I have seen in quite some time. It is captivating from the very beginning. Everett decides to share all of his bad habits, everything about his personality and day to day life that might be considered a deal breaker, and his ultimate deal breaker in his dating life and after 10 dates in 12 days, he finally finds Brinn, who reacts much differently than his other dates to this new dating approach. In the end, viewers will be left wanting a feature film of this romance. Watch and love!

Jillian's Vantage (23 Minutes) - John, a reclusive is forced to go on a date with his brother's friend, Jillian as it has been a year since his wife's death. John is surprised to find that Jillian is blind but before John has a chance to let his nervousness set in, Jillian helps John to "see things differently through the eyes of the heart." This is a truly touching piece that not only makes you appreciate your blessings and appreciate people for who they are, but see things in a more beautiful way. This was wonderfully written and definitely leaves you wanting to know more about how John merges into Jillian's life. Watch a trailer of the 2002 film here.

The Wine Bar (12 Minutes) - This 2006 comedy starts out awkward as Henry walks into a wine bar expecting bear, not realizing that it is a wine bar. Although as Henry gets comfortable in the bar, so does the audience. Henry introduces himself to the woman sitting next to him, Evelyn who is mute. Henry is intrigued and finds out that she is avoiding her controlling and selfish boyfriend, who ends up coming to the bar trying to work things out (his way). Henry immediately sees why Evelyn is frustrated with her boyfriend of 3 years and decides to speak for her since her boyfriend seems to ignore her thoughts. It seems Henry was conflicted with helping Evelyn out for the sake of her relationship or helping her out in order to create his own relationship with her but in the end, surprisingly he goes for the first choice. This refreshing turn will make viewers appreciate this short film all the more!

Celamy (18 Minutes) - What an emotional journey this film takes viewers on. What starts out as a heartbreaking yet sweet story of a child, Nelly who lost her mother, Alison and then makes an imaginary friend, Celamy quickly turns into a heartwarming story about a father who lost his first daughter, Celamy and wife, Alison but does not discourage his daughter, Nelly from living life with her imaginary friend, Celamy who unbeknownst to her is in fact her sister helping her cope with her mother's death. The film takes another turn as Nelly grows up into her pre-teens and is slowly ignoring Celamy which leads to the moment Celamy leaves Nelly's side. Though it is expected, it is still heartbreaking to see Celamy no longer at her side but Nelly's smile at the end says its all. Celamy will always be there. This 2005 drama was wonderfully written and directed, and the cast was magnificent! This will really draw you in, no matter what age. What a wonderful story.

Dance Lexie Dance (10 Minutes, Ireland) - Little Lexie is fascinated with river dancing but unfortunately her father would rather not have anything that reminds him of happiness...his late wife. Although all it takes is the guilt trip from Lexie, "Mom would have let me." The father quickly realizes that making his daughter happy is more important than wallowing in his pain, so he purchases a river dance instructional tape. It doesn't end there as he becomes very invested in his daughter's dreams and signs her up for a competition. This is a wonderful dramedy bringing a father and daughter closer together and giving both of them even more reasons to be content in life.

The Mantis Parable (9 Minutes) - This is very well crafted storytelling and such a beautiful animation! Viewers find themselves rooting for the caterpillar to become a butterfly in the nature and even moreso after the mantis mocks the caterpillar who is stuck inside a bottle. Though the caterpillar comes away with the last laugh as the mantis is captured by a human right after he mocks the caterpillar. Even better, the caterpillar turned butterfly then saves the mantis after some time. There was so much detail in this animation, as it creates a world of wonder and allows viewers for a short time to envision life from the eyes of an imprisoned insect. The music was arranged beautifully. Everything about this short film was magnificent. People of all ages will be able to identify and appreciate this parable.

Snakebite (9 Minutes, Scotland) - The production quality seems to switch back and forth and that takes away from really focusing on the story at hand. As for the story, it is quite comedic however I believe it is supposed to be a drama as 7 year old Sammy believes he is close to death after being bitten by what he believes to be a poisonous snake. Though either way, it is not a must see short film but if more was added to the film, it has potential to become an independent fantasy.

Agricultural Report (3 Minutes, Ireland)- Given the country, well the world's concern over Mad Cow Disease, and other flues and viruses, this is quite the comedic short! This was very well written and animated and will definitely have viewers laughing out loud! If you ever wondered what happens when a cow hears on the radio the latest threats to their kind, this is the short to watch. Watch the short here.

Teeth (2 Minutes, Ireland) - This is a refreshing comedy about 2 longtime buddies who lose their teeth in the most hilarious circumstances while fishing. See who gets the last laugh in this short.

The films, Dutch Bird, Two Soldiers, Binta and the Big Idea, Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont, and Mother of Mine also appear on the Sampler which you can enjoy when you pick up your copy!

TV Week in Review

*Reviews May Contain Spoilers*

Dollhouse - Stop Loss

Echo: If I get everyone out, you'll have to look me up.

What a fantastic episode! Adelle using Victor as a doll for herself (once again?) was not surprising but she needs to get a grip and work on keeping the dolls at this dollhouse so no one is split up...that among other things she needs to worry about. Although if using Victor or any other doll will keep her from being the biotch that she was in this episode...anyway, it was a terrible thought realizing that Victor's contract would be up but thankfully, things went array as Echo and Boyd had to help him out after he was released though. Victor asking if anyone had seen Sierra instead of, "Did I fall asleep?" was quite something! If only he could have gone off with Sierra after everything went down in this episode and helped Echo from the outside! Echo telling Sierra that Victor would not be coming back from his treatment was sad, just as sad as it was seeing Victor alone, trying to make sense of his life post soldier, post dollhouse. Victor sleeping in his bathtub because he is used to his bed in the dollhouse, love the detail. Didn't love Victor being kidnapped and forced into joining an army that thinks as one, but as I mentioned, Echo helped out in the end. The twist of the army imprinting Echo was great since it barely worked for the better of the army but did for the better of Victor (Anthony I should say), Sierra, and herself. All would have been well in the end if Adele hadn't tried to put Sierra, Victor, and Echo in the attic. The attic...we have heard so much about the attic and finally here it is! And the drama continues!

Dollhouse - The Attic

Adelle: I don't want to die.
Paul: Then only one of us is going to be disappointed.

This is definitely one of my favorite, if not my favorite episode this season. Turns out, Echo was working with Adelle to bring the dollhouse down...but how long has she been working with Adele? Echo in the attic and finding out that she could travel from mind to mind helped her try to find Sierra and Victor but that was only the beginning! Next, Echo finding the other guy who was helping her try to stay alive in their nightmares was step one as step two was saving Sierra and Victor from their nightmares. Once they were all joined together and safe from the worldwide dollhouse murderer on the loose in the attic, viewers got to see their first glimpse of what many have already seen in the thirteenth episode of Season One which did not air on TV. The murderer in the attic was Clyde who has been seeing the shape of things to come in his nightmare...hello Epitaph One! Finding out out how the attic was created and what Clyde 2.0 was up to was just what Echo needed to really get the ball rolling on taking down the dollhouse. Echo's flat lining plan at first did not seem to be the best idea...but it worked for Echo, Sierra, and Victor, who together with Topher, Paul, Boyd, and Adelle will take down the dollhouse. What an incredible ending to the episode to find out that these guys are all working (undercover) together! Paul saved, as an imprint of himself is great but if the dollhouse is taken down and Paul is technically brain dead...once the dollhouse is taken down, won't he just be back to square one at dead? Hmmm...well there are only 3 episodes left to find out and I have a feeling the last 3 are going to be incredible!

DVD Review: Extract

Here's a DVD you will want to be on the look out for next week as you finish your Christmas shopping...

From cult hero writer/director Mike Judge comes Extract, a fresh and funny look at the life of the owner and employees of a flavor extract factory on Blu-ray & DVD December 22, 2009.

Release Date: December 22, 2009
Feature Run Time: 92 minutes
Rated: R

Joel Reynolds (Jason Bateman) is sitting pretty. With a beautiful wife, a comfortable home and the almost finalized acquisition by General Mills of the culinary extracts business he has built with his loyal lieutenant Brian (J.K. Simmons), Joel seems to have it all. Except his wife is about as interested in him as she is in her career (supermarket coupon design), his employees want a piece of the pie and the sweet young thing with designs on him (Mila Kunis) is really a wily con-artist. On the advice of a drug-addled confidante (Ben Affleck), Joel cooks up a scheme to cheat with impunity by hiring a gigolo to seduce his wife—only to discover the young object of his affection is behind a lawsuit by long-time employee Step (Clifton Collins, Jr.) that will scotch the General Mills deal and leave Joel penniless. The best-laid plans unravel with hilarious results in this off-the wall comedy about life in the not-so-fast lane.

Joel is a guy who’ has successfully created his own business and it seems that he should be content however that is not possible as one of his employees sue the company for an injury and on top of that, there is no intimacy whatsoever in his marriage. Along with Joel, everyone – including Joel’s neighbor has an agenda, which makes for some outrageous and colorful characters. Needless to say, there is a lot going on. These characters want what they want and will do anything to get it, and that’s where the comedy comes in. This film has its comedic moments, especially when you least expect it though overall it is more about the layers of the characters than getting the comedic punch, which I liked. The casting is perfect however something that viewers may not like is how underused Kristen Wiig is in the film. And while the tangled web of characters was quite interesting to say the least although it seems there was a lot held back and this film had so much more room to explore. By the end, viewers may be stuck thinking, “That’s it?” After watching this blue collar film, you will see that there was so much potential for more in depth subplots and characters and more laugh out loud comedy. It’s a shame the film only touches the surface of what brilliance could have come out of this. If only Mike Judge hadn’t held back for the mainstream and gave us the flavor we were all expecting! Still, Extract is a fun film to watch so pick it up this week on DVD.

— This special feature takes viewers behind the scenes of shooting on set at a real water factory with the cast, crew, and real life factory workers in LA as the cast, Writer/Director, Mike Judge, and Producer, John Altschuler discuss the ingredients into making this wildly entertaining film. The cast included in this feature are Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Lidia Porto, Beth Grant, TJ Miller, JK Simmons, Javier GutiĂ©rrez, Clifton Collins Jr, Kristen Wiig, Dustin Milligan, David Koechner, and Gene Simmons. There is discussion on filming with actual factory workers and the cast members' backgrounds and knowledge of this job, Mike's influences in creating these characters, what it was like working with Mike and Kristen and more. There are a few blooper moments although not nearly enough for such a comedic film. This is a great behind the scenes look at the film, however I would have really loved to have seen Mike talk about the writing process, rewrites, and more about the casting of the film. Overall though, this feature was put together well and gives a short but sweet look into Extract.

DVD Review: Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie Extended Edition

This week marks the release of Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie Extended Edition on DVD!

Street Date: December 15, 2009
Rating: G
Total Run Time: 98 minutes

While on vacation, Alex (Selena Gomez) accidentally casts a spell that threatens her family’s existence! Max (Jake T. Austin) tries to keep his parents together while Alex and Justin (David Henrie) use every trick they know as they search for the “Stone of Dreams” to reverse the spell and save their family. Embark on a supernaturally exciting adventure as the Russos, your favorite family of wizards in-training, join together on a quest full of heart-stopping action and hilarious magical mishaps!

Wizards of Waverly Place fans and Wizards newcomers of all ages will both appreciate the story that this film has to tell as it definitely makes you really think about and appreciate your family and your existence while also including the perfect balance of comedy and family drama. What better a film to watch during the holidays than a film about a tropical family vacation filled with magic and adventure? While the plot is not completely original, viewers will still anticipate what will happen next in every scene of this action packed Disney flick which has some very memorable moment and one liners. Best of all, Wizards upholds powerful messages of course, all throughout the film regarding consequences, selflessness, appreciation, and respect. The cast was brilliant and were all used equally, the wardrobe was fabulous, and the production value is high…note that the movie was shot in Puerto Rico! What a lovely sight to see. Overall, the film just might be even better than the show which makes me wonder when the next Wizards film will be released as from the looks of this film, this is only the beginning. Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie is one of the best Disney Channel original films in quite some time and is definitely the perfect gift to give this Christmas.

Bonus Features:

Wiz Pix
- The main stars, Jake, David, and Selena introduce viewers to a behind the scenes look at shooting on location in Puerto Rico as well as their favorite moments on set! Personal photos are shared also, so this brings quite a personal touch in the special feature. Viewers also get to meet the windsurfing trainer, the effects coordinator talks about the rocks stunt, the costume designer talks about style for Selena’s character, the props manager gives us a closer look at the magical props, the parrot trainer tells us that 4 parrots are playing the roe of Ruby, Jake has fun with the director of the film, and viewers meet the Spanish speaking crew

Color-Changing Wishing Stone With Clip - For a limited time only, fans get a free color-changing wishing stone with a clip included in the extended edition DVD. The clip comes on the front of a "Wizards in Training Guide To Wishing" sheet that details the colors that the wishing stone turns when you wish for certain things. It's quite a cool keepsake for Wizards fans and a great gift to the fans since there are so many props used for the show, so this makes fans feel that much closer to the wizardry world. Great packaging!

This is definitely the perfect holiday treat for Disney fans so make sure to pick up your copy as soon as possible!

Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie Extended Edition is available now on DVD.
