My Favorite New Series of 2010

The Walking Dead (AMC)

Waking up in an empty hospital after weeks in a coma, County Sheriff Rick Grimes finds himself utterly alone. The world as he knows it is gone, ravaged by a zombie epidemic. The Walking Dead tells the story of the weeks and months that follow after the apocalypse. Based on Robert Kirkman’s hugely successful and popular comic book series, The Walking Dead is an epic, edge-of-your-seat drama where personal struggles are magnified against a backdrop of moment-to-moment survival. A survivalist story at its core, the series explores how the living are changed by the overwhelming realization that those who survive can be far more dangerous than the mindless walkers roaming the earth. They themselves have become the walking dead.

Starring: Lincoln (Teachers, Love Actually), Jon Bernthal (The Pacific, The Ghost Writer), Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break), Laurie Holden (The Shield, Stephen King’s The Mist), Jeffrey DeMunn (Stephen King’s The Mist, The Green Mile), Steven Yeun (The Big Bang Theory), Emma Bell (The Bedford Diaries), and Chandler Riggs (Get Low)

Season 2 of The Walking Dead premieres in late 2011.

Raising Hope (FOX)

At 23 years old, Jimmy Chance (Lucas Neff, "The Beast") is going nowhere in life. He skims pools for a living, parties every night and still lives at home with his family, including his Maw Maw (guest star, Cloris Leachman); his mother, Virginia (Martha Plimpton, "How to Make It in America"); his father, Burt (Garret Dillahunt, "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," "Damages"); and his cousin, Mike (Skyler Stone, "The Mentalist," "Dollhouse").

Jimmy's life takes a drastic turn when a chance romantic encounter with Lucy (guest star Bijou Phillips, "Choke," "Almost Famous") goes awry once he discovers she is a wanted felon. Months later, when Jimmy pays a visit to the local prison, he discovers Lucy gave birth to their baby, who he is now charged with raising.

At home with his new daughter, Jimmy's family is less than enthusiastic about a new addition to the household. His parents, who had him when they were 15, never knew anything about raising a child and have no interest in trying again. If Jimmy can work up the nerve to ask her out on a date, he might get some help from SABRINA (Shannon Woodward, "The Riches," "ER"), a sardonic checkout clerk he met at the supermarket. Cousin Mike is only concerned about how the baby is going to affect their social life, and out-of-touch Maw Maw is no help either. But Jimmy is determined to take care of his baby - whom Virginia thinks they should name Hope.

With very few useful skills but their hearts in the right place, will the Chance family be successful when they step into the unpredictable and immensely challenging world of parenting?

Raising Hope returns for the latter half of Season 1 in February 2011.

No Ordinary Family (ABC)

The Powells are about to go from ordinary to extraordinary. After 16 years of marriage, Jim and Stephanie’s relationship lacks the spark it once had, and their family life now consists of balancing work and their two children, leaving little time for family bonding. During a family vacation set up by Jim in an attempt to reconnect, their plane crashes into the Amazon River. But this is where the fun starts for the Powells, as they soon discover that something’s not quite right. Each of them now possesses unique and distinct superpowers. But saving and savoring their family life will be equally important, as they try to find purpose for their new powers and embark on a journey to find out what defines and unifies them. The Powells are a totally relatable family who happen to be a little bit amazing.

Starring: Michael Chiklis (The Shield), Julie Benz (Dexter), Kay Panabaker (CSI), Jimmy Bennett (Orphan), Romany Malco (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and Autumn Reeser (The O.C)

No Ordinary Family returns with the latter half of Season 1 Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 9/8c on ABC.

Canceled:

Terriers (FX)

Terriers from Creator/Executive Producer Ted Griffin (Ocean’s Eleven, Matchstick Men) and Executive Producer Shawn Ryan (The Shield), is a comedic drama starring Donal Logue (The Tao of Steve) and Michael Raymond-James (True Blood). It centers on “Hank Dolworth” (Logue), an ex-cop, who partners with his best friend “Britt Pollack” (Raymond-James) in an unlicensed private investigation business. Comedic, edgy, original, a show about high stakes in the face of low expectations, Terriers explores what it’s like in today's America to be “too small to fail.”

Huge (ABC Family)

Funny, heartbreaking and provocative, HUGE follows the lives of seven teens and the staff at a weight-loss camp, as they look beneath the surface to discover their true selves and the truth about each other. Based on author Sasha Paley’s book of the same name, HUGE was developed by Winnie Holzman (“Wicked,” “My So-Called Life,” “Once & Again”) and daughter Savannah Dooley.

My Generation (ABC)

What a difference ten years can make. In 2000, a documentary crew follows a disparate group of high schoolers from Greenbelt High School in Austin, TX as they prepare for graduation, then revisits these former classmates ten years later as they return home to rediscover that just because they’re not where they planned doesn’t mean they’re not right where they need to be.

These students couldn't wait to graduate and head out into the real world. But the world they were entering got very real very fast. As these classmates return home to revisit their old hopes for their future, they'll discover that, even if you don't get exactly what you thought you wanted out of life, it’s not too late to get what you need.

Yvonne Strahovski Supports Pet Adoption

Chuck star and Australia native, Yvonne Strahovski recently shot an ad for the new "Adopt, Don't Buy" Peta campaign.

Every year, 6 to 8 million stray and abandoned animals enter animal shelters across the U.S. and about half of them must be euthanized because of a lack of good homes, as many people decide to buy pets that are either bred or from a pet store.

Not only that but animal shelters see a spike in homeless animals every year after the holidays as families find themselves unable to care for the puppies and kittens they purchased as gifts. Buying a pet can require a 20 year commitment, so the decision to take a cat, dog, etc... home should be carefully weighed, especially over the holiday season.

So if you do decide to bring a pet into your home this holiday season, make sure that you adopt!

Chuck returns with all new episode Monday, January 17, 2011 at 8/7c on NBC.

DVD Review: Prayers for Bobby

Release Date: December 14, 2010
Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 91 minutes

Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Sigourney Weaver stars in PRAYERS FOR BOBBY, a captivating and emotional true story about a deeply religious suburban housewife and mother who struggles to accept her son’s homosexuality. Based on the book by Leroy Aarons, this Lifetime Original Movie premiered to nearly 4 million viewers and is a mainstay in the LGBT community.

Mary Griffith (Weaver) is a devout Christian who has raised her children with a conservative religious perspective. When her son, Bobby (Ryan Kelley), reveals that he is gay to his older brother, the entire family dynamic is forever shifted. While Bobby’s father and siblings slowly come to terms with his homosexuality, Mary turns to her steadfast beliefs in an attempt to “cure” her son. Alienated and quickly becoming more detached from the safety of his close-knit family, Bobby’s depression drives him to suicide. This tragic act causes the grief stricken Mary to question all of her views and she ultimately becomes a champion for gay rights.

Though I haven't read the book from which this film is based on, I could clearly tell that this film was a bit rushed. There was not as much depth as I had anticipated in regards to not just Mary's struggle accepting her son but the family's struggle living with Mary not being able to accept her son. It seemed Bobby's siblings and father were more accepting than Mary but the dynamic in the household before and after Bobby left home isn't shown enough. Viewers don't really get the full picture of the entire family dynamic. Nor is there enough time spent on Bobby's relationship with David. The film is much more simple than I expected. It gets to the point of telling the true story overall instead of really getting into the nitty gritty of every emotion, every struggle, etc... along the way in the story. Still, the film manages to pack quite the emotional punch. The performances were stellar! I was particularly impressed with Ryan Kelley who played Bobby and was also thrilled to see Austin Nichols from One Tree Hill play Bobby's older brother. Though this film takes place in the 70s, the message is just as important, especially recently when so many young students have committed suicide because of their struggle in life with their sexuality. This is a very moving film that I would definitely recommend to those against homosexuality.

Bonus Features:

Behind the Scenes
- Executive Producers, Daniel Sladek, Chris Taaffe, and David Permut talk about how they became involved in this project as well as meeting author, Leroy Aarons and the Griffith family before getting the rights to the film in this feature. The three also mention working with director, Russell Mulcahy (Resident Evil: Extinction) and Screenwriter, Katie Ford (Miss Congeniality) on the film and what the film means to them. This feature doesn't have as much depth as I would have liked, but because it is so short, it's still worth watching. You'll find something out that you didn't know before.

Meet the Stars - Actors, Sigourney Weaver, Ryan Kelley, Henry Czerny, and Dan Butler appear in this feature as they discuss how they prepared for their roles while Executive Producers, Daniel Sladek, David Permut, and Chris Taaffe talk about casting the main roles. This is a brief but very interesting look at the actors behind the real life characters.

Meet the Real Mary Griffith - This feature is a compilation of interviews with Sigourney Weaver, the Executive Producers, and the real life Mary Griffith. Again, there's not as much depth in the interviews as I would have expected, but it's a heartfelt feature.

Road to the GLAAD Awards - This feature shows Sigourney Weaver and the executive producers accepting their 2010 GLAAD Award for Outstanding TV Movie or Mini Series.

The Book of Mormon, a new musical from the four-time Emmy Award-winning creators of South Park and composer/co-creator of the Tony Award winning musical, Avenue Q, will make the Eugene O’Neill Theatre their home starting on preview night, February 24, 2011! The musical is scheduled to open on Broadway exactly one month after previews and this interview below has gotten me very excited for its opening!

I was thrilled to find out that the musical stars Asmeret Ghebremichael who I enjoyed seeing Legally Blonde the Musical a few years back. The musical also stars Josh Gad, Andrew Rannells, Nikki M. James, Rory O’Malley, and Michael Potts with Scott Barnhardt, Justin Bohon, Darlesia Cearcy, Kevin Duda, Brian Tyree Henry, John Eric Parker, Jason Michael Snow, Benjamin Schrader, Michael James Scott, Brian Sears, Lawrence Stallings, Rema Webb, Maia Nkenge Wilson and Tommar Wilson.

Though a Christian, I am really excited to see this musical! How about you?

The Book of Mormon features book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. The world premiere production is choreographed by three-time Tony Award-nominee Casey Nicholaw (Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Drowsy Chaperone) and directed by Nicholaw and Parker.

DVD Review: Lennon NYC

Today marks the 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s tragic death and this year marks what would have been his 70th birthday. As the world remembers the iconic musician and his entire solo album catalog is re-released, A&E presents the DVD premiere of LENNONYC, a singular documentary telling the definitive story of Lennon’s post Beatles’ career.

Release Date: December 7, 2010
Rating: N/A
Running Time: 115 Minutes

LENNONYC is the story of one of the most famous and influential artists of the Twentieth Century, and how he found redemption not in the public adoration he craved as a youth, but in the quiet and simple pleasures of fatherhood. And, though he wasn't a typical immigrant, his story is certainly an immigrant's tale. Lennon came to New York City in 1971, seeking what every other immigrant who has washed up on its shores has sought: freedom-the freedom to be himself and not 'Beatle John,' the freedom to love without the overwhelming public scorn he and Yoko had suffered in London, and, simply, the freedom to live a normal life.

LENNONYC tells this story with never before-released in-studio recordings, concert film only recently transferred to HD, and a trove of Lennon/Ono compositions-some in versions previously unheard. It also contains interviews with those closest to Lennon during this period in his life-friend and photographer, Bob Gruen; musical collaborator and drummer, Jim Keltner; May Pang, Lennon's companion during his 'lost weekend;'rock superstar, Elton John; and Jack Douglas, the producer of Double Fantasy. LENNONYC also contains one of the most powerful and emotionally direct interviews Yoko Ono has ever given. No film about John Lennon has ever covered this story with the same breadth and depth as LENNONYC.

Lennon NYC is an incredibly well produced documentary detailing Lennon's life in New York City. This documentary includes fascinating audio from conversations in the recording studio, video from various concerts (including Ten for Two, One to One, and his surprise Madison Square Garden performance), interviews with Lennon, audio from Lennon's DJ days in Los Angeles, photos of Lennon with Yoko Ono and friends, and most importantly, interviews from Yoko Ono and friends. This is an eye opening documentary for those not very familiar with Lennon's four year struggle to received a green card because it shows just how driven Lennon was as a peace activist, which oddly enough seemed to have delayed the process of him getting his green card. You might know about the FBI following those Lennon was close to, but you will find out to what extent straight from his friends. Having not grown up in this time, all I know is Beatles and Lennon music, not as much Beatles and Lennon history. So it was very interesting to find out how Yoko Ono briefly broke up with Lennon and the effect that it had on Lennon when he moved away to Los Angeles. Thankfully, he sobered up, moved back to New York, and everything seemed to line up with a happy ending. What was perhaps the most touching moment for me was listening to the audio of his son, Sean singing Beatles songs. Those moments are just so priceless and mean just as much now as it did back then and will years from now. On a lighter note, I found it quite interesting to find out how listeners can tell which guitar Lennon is playing on Beatles' albums. You'll have to watch this documentary to find out. The film wraps up with Lennon's death, mentioning that he got shot but not by whom or any other details of it. Instead, video of fans outside of his apartment is shown as Yoko Ono talks about being at the hospital and then just listening to his music and audio from recording sessions in the studio. The film wraps up in a way that won't make viewers sad but rather happy that Lennon lived the best life that he could have lived and love literally kept him going. This was such an enjoyable documentary to watch and I'd highly recommend it for all Lennon fans to have in their collection.

DVD Review: Going the Distance

Release Date: November 30, 2010
Rating: R
Running Time: 103 minutes

Erin (Drew Barrymore) and Garrett (Justin Long) strike sparks for a summer fling in New York City but neither expects it to last once Erin heads home to San Francisco and Garrett remains behind for his Big Apple job. But after six romantic weeks, neither is sure they want it to end. So despite opposing coasts, naysaying friends and family and unexpected temptations, the couple just might have found something like love. And helped by a lot of texting, sexting and late-night phone calls, they might actually go the distance.

Going the Distance is one of the most honest romantic comedies that I have seen in a long time but unfortunately, that's not a great thing. The film is realistic in the way that many women and men really talk and the characters express more genuine emotions than most romantic comedies period. The problem is that the film tries too hard to be likable. It takes reality and runs with it whereas it should have just taken reality and let it be. That would have made the film more welcome and fresh in its contemporary state than the raunch fest that this film turned out to be. Going the Distance really had the potential to be a very compelling film about two smart individuals trying to make their relationship work from coast to coast. Instead, its charm is overshadowed by sexual jokes and profanity which after a certain point becomes more disturbing and unnecessary than comedic. The idea of the film was smart but the execution is just not right. I'll watch He's Just Not That Into You one hundred more times before I sit down with my family and friends on movie night to watch this.

DVD Review: V The Complete First Season

I did not grow up watching V the original mini series, but having enjoyed the 2009 ABC re-make of V so much, I was thrilled to be given the Complete First Season on DVD before Season Two premieres!

Release Date: November 2, 2010
Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 520 minutes

They arriVe. Earth?s first alien encounter begins when huge motherships appear over 29 major cities. The visitors ? the Vs ? are human-like beings who know our languages and bring awesome gifts of healing and technology. People everywhere welcome them as saviors. But a fledgling resistance is on the rise, determined to reveal the shocking truth. Among the underground cadre: an FBI Counter Terrorism Agent who uncovers a terror cell no one ever expected?and finds that her teenage son is drawn to the beauty and promise of the Vs. Get in the know with the amazing first season of the series that combines sci-fi thrills with the uncertainties of the post-9/11 world. Here. Now. AdVenture begins.

Season one of V is an incredible 12 episodes of action packed sci fi drama that anyone can appreciate. It tells the story of good vs. evil mainly following one strong woman fighting for humanity and the earth against another strong woman fighting for the visitors' take over of the earth. There are strong political and religious undertones to the show, moreso religious which make this show more thought provoking than many scripted shows on the air today. The characters are well developed and have more layers than I believe we have yet to see. Their dialogue is so smart, which sometimes is drawn out and make the complex plot lines slow moving at times. Though there's so much going on in each episode, it's hard not to be disappointed. Every moment is full of suspense and the writers should be very proud that they've been able to achieve such a show that has its viewers anticipating every single moment. The special effects are superb, doing what the original V mini series could never have done in its time. Having seen a few episodes of the original V mini series, I am really very satisfied with how much more above and beyond this show has been able to go thanks to the re-make. This is a sensational tale with outstanding actors and spectacular special effects that enhance this story in ways I couldn't have imagined. The original V showed the potential that this show had to be and now it finally is at that point to shine its brightest...and the cast and crew are doing a fabulous job with the material. This is great work.

Bonus Features:

The Actors Journey From Human To V
(16:54 minutes) - This feature takes fans on the set of V as the actors discuss how they became attached to this project and more, starting out with their familiarity with the original V mini series. Some footage from the mini series is shown as the actors are being interviewed on various stages of the set. Next, the actors discuss what attracted them to this project and it was quite interesting to find out how Elizabeth Mitchell came into this project! Aside from Morena Baccarin's audition story and Elizabeth's story, viewers won't find out the audition process for the rest of the cast members. The rest of the feature takes viewers into an analysis of the characters of V straight from the actors' themselves. Laura Vandervoort and Morena Baccarin briefly talk about how V is doing a great justice to women and not too far after Vandervoort and Scott Wolf mention how the line of hero and villain isn't clearly drawn. So it's quite an interesting look at who these characters are and what their actions mean to the world. Elizabeth Mitchell talks about how fascinating the the religious context of the show is and it is refreshing to see an actor so incredibly enthusiastic about such elements of their show. Overall, this was a very well put together feature...if only it could have lasted longer.

Appearing in this Feature:
Actors, Morena Baccarin, Christopher Shyer, Laura Vandervoort, Logan Huffman, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Scott Wolf
Executive Producers, Scott Rosenbaum and Scott Peters

Commentary - The commentary is conducted by Executive Producers Steve Pearlman and Scott Rosenbaum and for the episode, "Fruition." I was really disappointed that there was no commentary for the "Pilot", finale, or the really significant episode, "John May" and none of the cast members participated in the commentary. This commentary was fairly dry and not entertaining while sharing interesting behind the scenes facts and what the aim is for different elements of season two. I found it interesting when it was briefly mention how they've shown just how controlling a parent can be through Anna...specifically speaking, when Anna was putting on her daughters shoes. For those aspiring to film their own projects in Vancouver, the guys mention how film friendly China town is. There are a few other interesting tidbits discussed including the size of the ship and a prop mistake that was quickly fixed. Overall though, this is definitely not a must watch commentary.

Breaking Story: The World of V (16:36 minutes) - This feature takes viewers inside the writers room and on set of filming! Executive Producers, Scott Rosenbaum, Steve Pearlman, Scott Peters, Writer, Greg Hurwitz, Production Designer, Stephen Geaghan, and Actors, Morris Chestnut, Logan Huffman, Morena Baccarin, Scott Wolf, Elizabeth Mitchell all appear in this feature as they discuss the context of which this version of V lives. What I found really interesting is something that I noticed when the Pilot originally aired but have since forgot about, is that this takes place in a post 9/11 world, so there's a lot more angst to be had opposed to the original V. Also, really eye opening was seeing one of the executive producers say that this show has less political ambitions and more moral ambitions. I could definitely see both influences but always wondered what the main angle was, so I'm thrilled to finally know. Other topics discussed include the pace of the story, the use of visual effects, and the battle between Anna and Erica among other things. It's a short inside look but less is more in this feature and it's a great tool to look deeper into this world of V.

An Alien in Human Skin: The Makeup FX of V (11:52 minutes) - This feature takes viewers on set of filming and in the makeup and visual effects departments and a bit of footage from the original V mini series is shown as well as Executive Producers, Scott Rosenbaum and Scott Peters, Makeup FX Supervisor, Toby Lindala, Makeup FX Technicians, Benson Musaev and Glenn Martin, and Visual FX Supervisor, Andrew Orloff discuss the partnership between the two departments to make the visuals appear as real as possible. It's a short look into the work that this crew does and it only takes a deeper look at a few of the special effects/makeup jobs done, so hopefully we can expect a more in depth look on the makeup on the Season 2 DVD after Season 2 airs.

The Visual Effects of V (15:07 minutes) - This feature takes viewers behind the scenes of filming on stage 4, which is almost all green screen as well as ZOIC Studios where the virtual sets are created amongst other things. Images of each stage from green screen to the final composite are shown and oh my, there is so much involved in every stage! I also found the development of the blue energy to be quite interesting. This was much a more fascinating part two of the previous feature in my opinion. One and two go hand in hand but this part of the equation for some reason is far more fascinating to me. Anyway, it's definitely worth the watch.

Appearing in this feature:
Production Designer, Stephen Geaghan
Executive Producers, Scott Rosenbaum, Scott Peters, Steve Pearlman
Visual FX Supervisor, Andrew Orloff
Actors, Scott Wolf, Laura Vandervoort, Elizabeth Mitchell
Visual Effects Producer at ZOIC Studios, Stephen Chiu
Compositing Lead at ZOIC Studios, Nate Overstrom
Lead CG Artist at ZOIC STudios, Sallyanne Massimini

Detached Memories (Approx. 16 minutes total) - Unaired scenes are available to watch for not only the "Pilot" episode, but also the episodes, "There Is No Normal Anymore," "John May," "We Can't Win," "Hearts and Minds," and "Fruition." There are 2 unaired scenes from the Pilot, one of which I loved in which Chad finds out that a V has been on earth for the past 6 months. There are a number of scenes from "There Is No Normal Anymore," many of which from the rally outside the FBI building. I found all of these scenes to be interesting since I loved that set and the amount of energy coming from everyone in these scenes...so being able to see more of these scenes as a treat. There are two unaired scenes from "John May" which I can understand why they were cut and five for "We Can't Win," three involving Erica and two involving Valerie. I found the scenes involving Valerie to be much more intriguing and attention grabbing than the scenes with Erica, probably because viewers would have gotten to see more of what Valerie was feeling after she found out Ryan was a V. There are four scenes for the episode, "Hearts and Minds" which involve Erica and Tyler, Ryan and Valerie, and Erica at church with Father Jack. All of these scenes add to this episode, so I can only imagine these scenes were cut for time. Lastly, there are two unaired scenes from "Fruition" that do not add anything to the episode, so viewers can clearly see what time wasters they are. Overall, the majority of the unaired scenes did have something significant to add to the show, but many of the messages in those scenes were displayed elsewhere in those episodes, so there really isn't much to miss here. Approximately four unaired scenes are shown without all of the effects added...and it's quite interesting to see scenes at different stages before the final product. A lot of work is put into this show and it pays off tremendously in the final product.

My New Music Obsession: Fireflight

I haven't been this excited about Christian music since Stacie Orrico!

Over the past few weeks, I decided to venture out and find Christian artists and bands outside of the "gospel" genre that I mainly always listen to and I found so many talented musicians and singers...one of which is the band, Fireflight.

The band has released four albums, the most recent being For Those Who Wait. Their debut released in 2006 and since then, the Florida-based rock band have won various awards, had their music appear on various television networks, and have been on quite an exciting ride performing their music across the globe.

My favorite songs from the band include:

"Go Ahead" and "Unbreakable" from the album, Unbreakable

"Myself" and "You Decide" from the album, The Healing of Harms

"Fire in My Eyes," "What I've Overcome," and "All I Need To Be" from the album, For Those Who Wait

Their music definitely needs to be on my iPod at all times because it is just that powerful and influential in each and every one of my days. How many artists' songs on your iPod positively affect your day and the way that you see and experience your life?

TV Review: Gene Simmons Family Jewels Season 6 Premiere

After discovering A&E's Gene Simmons Family Jewels not too long ago, I have been hooked to this show and have been anticipating the new season...so I am thrilled that the season 6 premiere is finally here come this Sunday night!

Gene’s life is an open book, but the one thing he keeps close to the vest is his mother’s harsh survival as a Jewish girl in Europe during WWII. His mother and Anne Frank were approximately the same age when they went into concentration camps and seeing how Anne lived strikes an emotional chord with Gene. No one is more important to Gene than his mother, and it’s a raw and telling look at Gene’s family history and childhood that fans have never had access to before now.

In the one hour premiere of Gene Simmons Family Jewels titled, "Past Demons," Gene and Shannon head to Amsterdam for a KISS concert and their plans for before the concert quickly change when Gene gets fan mail from a young native who wants to interview Gene for his school project. Instead of a day of interviews for local and professional media outlets, Gene is taken on a tour of Amsterdam from one of his youngest fans while being interviewed about his past and how his family's past affects him. Gene, Shannon, their two bodyguards, and the young fan take a visit to Anne Frank's house, where Gene gets quite emotional. Afterwords, the fan brings Gene and Shannon to his home where Gene and the fan's Grandfather talk about their families' Holocaust experiences. Back in the states, Nick attempts to visit Gene's mom, his Grandma in New York before his flight to Amsterdam but Grandma isn't home. It was a sweet attempt. The episode ends with Nick meeting up with his parents at the KISS concert and everyone talking to the cameras on the couch about how important it is to know about your family and what they have been through.

In the closing, Sophie and Nick mention the Flora Army Facebook Fan Page that was created in honor of Gene's mother who is a Holocaust survivor. I was not at all expecting such a heavy episode to start out the season of the show, but here it is. It is perhaps the most emotional episode to date. There are only ten episodes for the season, so I am wondering if this episode is setting the tone for the entire season. This could have been a heavy season in the Tweed-Simmons' lives or maybe just a heavy trip. Only time will tell. No matter the case, this was a very well edited episode and full of such important information for the world to see. Not everyone can go to Amsterdam to visit Anne Frank's house and the coverage of the tour of the house was fantastic. This was yet another great episode of Gene Simmons Family Jewels which shed the light on the real jewels, those slain in the Holocaust and the Holocaust survivors.

Gene Simmons Family Jewels Season Six premieres December 5, 2010 at 9/8c on A&E.

DVD Review: Gene Simmons Family Jewels Seasons 4 and 5

One day, not too long ago, I had the television on while working on Hollywood the Write Way and I kept getting distracted by the TV...so none of my work was getting completed. So I thought to myself, "Let me turn to something that I won't pay attention to." While flipping through the channels, I settled on Gene Simmons Family Jewels which I had heard about but had never seen before.

A&E was airing a marathon. Long story short, I only got 2 things done that day that I had planned to get done because I was sucked into this reality show quicker than I had anytime to realize it. Ever since that day, I have been anticipating more marathons of the show...to no luck due to my erratic schedule. Thankfully, I was sent The Complete Seasons 4 and 5 and have been loving every minute of it.

One of the things that intrigues me so much about this show is that it follows a functional family for once. That probably has something to do with everyone being an adult in the house (including Sophie, who though still young and in high school at the time, has a lot of good things going on in her busy life). Everyone in the family has their own positive thing going on. They know how to get down to business and they know how to have fun with it and just take advantage of life. This family is living the life and living it responsibly and respectfully and that's what's so great about this show. Of course they have their playful sarcastic moments and moments where they are in questionable and scary situations but doesn't every family? It's so much fun to see how this rock and roll family deals and I really don't know why. Perhaps I am so fascinated at how normal this rock and roll family deals overall. A really sweet addition to the show are snippets of home videos shot by mom, Shannon all the way back to the late 80s. This is such an intriguing and entertaining reality show and I definitely recommend that you watch, whether you watch much reality TV or not.

Legendary rock god and multi-hyphenate Gene Simmons and his unconventional family are back and better than ever for season four of the hit A&E unscripted series Gene Simmons Family Jewels. This season kicks off with Sophie s sweet sixteen party, giving viewers an all-access pass to the landmark celebration. From Gene s appearance on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and his filming of a Japanese monster flick, to Shannon preparing for a role in a roller derby exploitation film, to Nick getting his own apartment, to Sophie fending off ill-intentioned teenaged boys, follow the Simmons-Tweed clan as they set out to prove, yet again, why they are the most non-traditional, traditional family in America.

Bonus Feature:

Additional Footage
(45:30 minutes) - There are a number of unaired scenes to watch on this DVD, including the scenes titled, "Gene Simmons: Thespian," "Gene's Guide for Girls: Never Trust Boys," "Jammin With Nick," "Souvenir Romping," "Pink's Wieners," "Sun Studio Legends," "Nick's Beverly Hills Blues," "Gene Vs. Sophie: The SAT Challenge," "Sporty Gene?," "Simmons-Tweed Family Time," "Two Doctors and a Little Pepper," "Who's the Old Fart?," "Gesha KISSes," "The Secret Life of Tracy," "Gene's StratosFEARS," "Gene's Secret to Success," and "Tricks and Treats." My favorite moments have to be Gene discussing makeup overseas with Geishas, the family mistakenly conducting an intervention for Tracy and eating dog treats, and Gene bringing a dog to a business meeting to butter up the female executive. Lastly, my favorite part of the additional footage is "The Couch Potato and the Meatball," which shows outtakes from one of the opening sequences for the show. You will laugh out loud!

Legendary rock god Gene Simmons returns with his unconventional family for another wildly entertaining season of Gene Simmons Family Jewels. From a major health scare for Shannon, to Gene's 60th birthday, to Gene and Nick's first adult fight, season five gives fans an unprecedented look at the many adventures and milestone moments that make this family so special. As if that wasn't enough, Gene is in the midst of a sold-out world tour and you get to come along for the ride. This season also features Nick playing with Gene's bandmates Tommy Thayer (lead guitar), Eric Singer (drums) and dad on bass; Sophie babysitting kids from hell; and Gene touring his roots in New York City.

Bonus Feature:

Additional Footage
(32:34 minutes) - There are a number of unaired scenes to watch on this DVD, including the scenes titled, "Shannon Gets a Mammogram," "Breast Cancer Awareness," "Shannon and Nick Make Sushi," "The Case of Mis-Cake-En Identity," "Gene the Tourist," "The Demon Visits the Dead," "Shannon & Tracy's Big Adventure," "Gene Loves Kids," "Grandma's Boyfriend," "and Gene Goes Bald." These additional scenes are longer than the additional scenes from Season 4, so there are less of them. And these scenes are more intriguing and entertaining I would say as well. The first two scenes are very important for everyone to watch and will hopefully encourage you to get checked out yourselves. The rest are scenes that will make your jaw drop and laugh out loud for quite some time, even after viewing. If you're going to watch additional footage from one of the two DVDs, I would suggest this footage.

Hanukkah Treat From Sarah Lefton

While I've shared lots of Christmas treats, I also want to share something for my Jewish friends. And just in time for Hanukkah, yall can check out G-dcast: The Torah in 55 Episodes, a collection of quirky Internet cartoons created from classic Jewish texts.

This collection of cartoons and music relate Jewish wisdom and stories through online media and celebrities like Mayim Bialik (Blossom, The Secret Life of the American Teenager), David Levithan (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist), wildly popular Jewish rock band the Josh Nelson Project, and up and coming stars like hip hop artist Prodezra Beats.

Founder and published journalist, Sarah Lefton had an "ah ha" moment in a class on the Talmud taught by the inspirational AMICHAI LAU-LAVIE (FOUNDER & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF STORAHTELLING) at the renowned B'nai Jeshurun synagogue on the West Side of Manhattan. That experience changed her life and "turned her on" as she says, to the Jewish teachings she was never exposed to. With that, she got outrageous, quit her advertising career, went for broke and started applying for grants and asking for donations to start a company that would share what she had learned, giving back in a creative and thought-provoking way.

Founded in 2008, Lefton brought together 55 of her coolest friends to create the first G-dcast series: G-dcast: The Torah. G-dcast was named "One of North America’s Most Innovative Jewish Nonprofits" in Slingshot 2010-2011, a resource guide for Jewish innovation. With the success of G-dcast: The Torah, G-dcast: The Holidays is currently in production and G-dcast: The Prophets is currently in pre-production for release in 2011!

So stay tuned for many more exciting new resources from Lefton next year and have a Happy Hanukkah!

G-dcast is a media production company with a nonprofit educational mission: to raise worldwide Jewish literacy, spark great conversations and revolutionize religion by demystifying core Jewish texts with accessible and entertaining media, including animated shorts, feature-length films and games.

DVD Review - Hannah Montana Forever: Who Is Hannah Montana?

Release Date: November 2, 2010
Rating: G

Things get complicated when she has to keep her true identity from friends, classmates, crushes, paparazzi and millions of fans! Join Miley on a journey of self-discovery in 8 hilarious episodes -- including the sensational series pilot! It's the big moment y'all have been waiting for -- and you can see it first, only on this DVD! Sweet nibblets!

Hannah Montana Forever: Who Is Hannah Montana? is a must have in any Hannah Montana collection, as this DVD features not only the Pilot episode of Hannah Montana but 7 episodes where Hannah Montana reveals herself as Miley Stewart to a handful of those closest to her...including the newest revelation in the one hour episode, "I'll Always Remember You" from the final season of Hannah Montana. While I enjoyed the newest episode, "I'll Always Remember You," I could have done without a certain trio singing throughout the episode basically every time there was a transition to another scene. I actually enjoyed watching the other episodes more just to relive the earlier seasons of the show. I find the earlier seasons to be more fun and classic Disney because as the show went on and Miley grew older, the show started to mature and it became more boy crazy and such. Overall, every episode is fun to look back on, so if you're a Hannah Montana fan, you'll want to have these episodes in your collection to remember when Hannah took off her wig for her friends.

Unfortunately there are no Hannah Montana related Bonus Features on this DVD but there is a "Sneak Peek At Ashley Tisdale's Upcoming Movie Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure" which lasts for just over 2 minutes.

DVD Review: Elf : Ultimate Collector's Edition

If you know someone who is a huge fan of Christmas films, comedy, and Will Ferrell, the perfect gift to give this Christmas is the Elf: Ultimate Collector's Edition!!!

This edition arrives in a collectible holiday tin filled with an Elf CD soundtrack sampler (which includes 5 Christmas classics), a festive holiday stocking, gift tags and a magnetic picture frame. Because of the gift tags...I'd probably recommend giving this gift to your loved one on Christmas Eve or sometime before Christmas so that they can use the gifts tags now rather than next Christmas and start to use their stocking. Aside from that, everything else can be a treat to use on Christmas day.

I don't know what yall will have on the television after Christmas gifts are opened, but Elf will be playing at my house!

Release Date: October 26, 2010
Rating: PG
Running Time: 95 minutes

This hilarious Christmas film tells the tale of a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts on Christmas Eve and is transported back to the North Pole and raised as an elf. Years later Buddy learns he is not really an elf and goes on a journey to New York City to find his true identity.

Elf is one of my family's favorite Christmas films and will probably always be. Will Ferrell is a comedic genius and the chemistry he has with his co-stars in the film is fabulous, making the film all the more hilarious. The story is well written and is so magical and innocent, bringing adults back to their child hood days when the world was full of such a wide magnitude of wonder. The setting is classic New York...I don't believe I've seen a Christmas film that is either not in New York, a suburban neighborhood, or the North Pole. This film goes to two of those places and it's just one of the many elements that this film timeless. It's a modern day tale and yet because of the story at hand, the dialogue, and use of the settings that are chosen, it can be seen years from now and still be appreciated. This is not only a delight to watch because of how enchanting it is alone, it's heartwarming because of the character growth not just for Buddy but those he meets and forms relationships on his journey. Elf is a modern day Christmas classic for all ages to enjoy...and if Elf is one of your favorite Christmas films, the Ultimate Collector's Edition is worth the buy - just for the cool stocking alone!
