Concept Art for Disney Pixar's “BRAVE"

Four pieces of concept art from Disney Pixar's upcoming film, "BRAVE" have just been released!

Highland of the Brave -- The rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland serve as the backdrop for BRAVE, a new tale that joins the land’s ancient lore—stories of epic battles and mystical legends passed down for generations.

Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, BRAVE is the grand adventure of Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer who confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts to discover the true meaning of courage.

The film also features the voices of Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Julie Walters, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson, and Robbie Coltrane.

It looks like Brave is heading towards epic territory. What do you think?

BRAVE takes aim at theaters on June 22, 2012 (in Disney Digital 3D in select theaters).

Advance TV Review: Improv-a-ganza Premiere

Host, Drew Carey and your favorites from Who's Line Is It Anyway? are back for another exciting half hour improv experience! This time, the cast includes Bob Derkach, Jonathan Mangum, Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, Brad Sherwood, Ryan Stiles, and special guest, Wayne Brady. Other comedians viewers will see over the first season's 40 episode order include Heather Anne Campbell, Jeff Davis, Chip Esten, Kathy Kinney, and Sean Masterson.

Taped at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas earlier this year, these crazy comedians are taking audience participation up a notch, whether or not the audience members are sober enough to participate. This makes for one of the most incredibly awkward stage experiences to date, since the audience participant who was drunk talked throughout the sketch and ruined the entire flow of the sketch. Clearly, every live show is just as unpredictable as the last, even when bringing back popular segments from Whose Line. Plus, having just finished watching and reviewing Colin and Brad Two Man Group, the "Moving People" sketch on here didn't exactly measure up. I'm also unsure of how much will be censored as far as the language goes, since one of the cast members says "bitch" in the first episode. Needless to say, the rest of the season is sure to be a roller coaster.

It's unclear how many of the sketches will be new and how many will be familiar to us all, but I hope that it is a fair mix instead of what may seem to be nothing more than a Whose Line revival. It is great to see the guys going out into the audience and hand pick the participants as each of them explains the next sketch. So in this sense, the format is more open than on Whose Line. While Drew Carey is the "host" of this show, all of the comedians split the duty in telling the audience about what's going on throughout the show. However, while more open among its cast, an aspect that is not as open yet are the number of sketches. There seem to be only 3-4 sketches per episode. I feel like there were not only more sketches but sketches that moved at a quicker pace on Whose Line, so hopefully this show can pick up the pace in order to pick up more laughs.

The Improv-a-ganza Premiere episode barely touches the surface of the comedic genius that is in every one of these comedians. While a decent introduction to the show, the first season as a whole will be much more memorable than this episode alone.

Improv-a-ganza premieres Monday, April 11, 2011 at 8pm ET/PT on GSN.

The Watkins Review & Its 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People

The Watkins Review, the UK's Oldest Esoteric Institution has announced its list of the 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People.

Honestly, I don't like the idea of ranking spiritual leaders. That's just wrong on so many levels. Plus, so many people that should be acknowledged in such a feature were left out in this one (i.e. Joyce Meyer among so many others). Some who have no place on this list of theirs were included (I won't name names).

It's great to celebrate people who've been spiritually influential but making a list was the wrong way to go about it.

If they continue with a feature such as this, a suggestion would be to include people who are influential not just globally because they are making a difference too. Feature people across the globe who may not be known around the globe but are just as significant where they are. I find it silly that someone can be a great "candidate" for this list but not make it because they are not googled enough. One of the requirements to be on this list is that "the person is frequently googled, appears in Nielsen Data, and is highlighted throughout the blogosphere." Is google really the main source for people to go to for spiritual influence? Really? This is just one of the many components that need to be used when making a list such as this, not one of three components.

There are quite a number of names that I am unfamiliar with, so it will be interesting to get to know more about them over time. But honestly, I am going in cautiously with this list if at all.

The list ranks spiritual leaders and authors including the Dalai Lama (#2), Paulo Coelho (#7), Nelson Mandela (#19), the Pope (#34), Dan Brown (#42), and Eckhart Tolle at #1.

Here's a summary of the full list:
Male: 76% Female: 24%
Median Age: 67 years
The Oldest: 104 years (Kyozan Joshu Sasaki)
The Youngest: 30 years (Jeff Foster)

What do you think of a list such as this?

The Watkins Review is sold and published by Watkins Books and is also available on the Apple App store world wide.

New Promo + Interview for NBC's The Voice

Everyone who knows me personally knows that I have always been a huge fan of Christina Aguilera. I've made a post here and there about her so as not to be tempted to go crazy and make this a fan blog. But I have to share with you these new promos for the new NBC singing competition, The Voice.

Christina Aguilera is one of the four coaches for this new competition and while at first, I thought this type of television format was above her in a way, I've become to really embrace her new venture and this show which has such a unique format that Carson Daly will be hosting.

Also coaching the talented group of singers we have yet to meet are Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton.

Check out the promos:

What do ya think? I can't wait!

Hanna Trailer

Coming to theaters next month is one of the most fascinating action packed films of the Spring...not to mention of the most anticipated films of 2011.

Hanna (played by Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan of Focus' Atonement, also directed by Joe Wright) is 16 years old. She is bright, inquisitive, and a devoted daughter. Uniquely, she has the strength, the stamina, and the smarts of a soldier; these come from being raised by her widowed father Erik (Eric Bana), an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of North Finland. Erik has taught Hanna to hunt, put her through extreme self-defense workouts, and home-schooled her with only an encyclopedia and a book of fairy tales. Hanna has been living a life unlike any other teenager; her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. But out in the world there is unfinished business for Hanna's family, and it is with a combination of pride and apprehension that Erik realizes his daughter can no longer be held back.

This turning point in Hanna's adolescence is a sharp one; she is separated from Erik and embarks on the mission that she was always destined for. Before she and her father can reunite as planned in Berlin, Hanna is captured by agents dispatched by ruthless intelligence operative Marissa Wiegler (Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett). She soon turns the tables on her captors in a daring escape. As Hanna journeys across Europe and nears her ultimate target, she faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.

Here's the trailer:

This film looks incredible! I cannot wait to see Hanna and I'm not just saying that because I love Saoirse Ronan's work. It's definitely a plus that she is playing Hanna, a teenage assassin! The concept is incredible as is the cast and the filming locations (Europe & Morocco). Everything about this film is fascinating so I would be crazy to miss out on all that screenwriters, Seth Lochhead and David Farr have to offer. Hanna is rated PG-1 and runs at just under 2 hours and you can bet every moment will be worth it this Spring.

HANNA Opens in theaters Friday, April 8, 2011.

DVD Review: Yogi Bear

Release Date: March 22, 2011
Rating:
Running Time:

Everyone's favorite pic-a-nic basket-stealing bear comes to the big screen in Yogi Bear, a new adventure, filmed in 3D, that combines live action with computer animation. Yogi has always relied on his quick wit and fast feet to stay one step ahead of irate campers while dodging his long-suffering nemesis, Ranger Smith. But he and Boo Boo are about to face a situation worse than anything Yogi has ever gotten them into Jellystone Park is being sold! To cover his mismanagement of city funds and fuel his election campaign, Mayor Brown plans to sell the park to loggers. Families will no longer be able to experience the natural beauty of the outdoors Jellystone has always provided and, even worse, Yogi, Boo Boo, and all their friends will be tossed out of the only home they've ever known. Faced with his biggest challenge ever, Yogi must prove he really is smarter than the average bear, as he and Boo Boo join forces with Ranger Smith to find a way to save the park from closing forever.

If anybody needed an update on what Yogi Bear is up to today, the 2010 family comedy with live action actors and computer animated bears is the film to watch. And if you're not exhausted with the 3D format, that's available as well. Although there were less than a dozen times that I noticed the moments which were crafted for 3D viewing.

Anyway, I personally only viewed this film due to Anna Faris playing the role of an aspiring documentary film maker who makes Jellystone Park her latest project. There definitely wasn't enough of Faris in the film, but I was still surprisingly attentive in the scenes without her. In fact, she is absent in the initial start of the film. Another live action actor that I really enjoyed was Tom Cavanagh who played the park ranger that makes it his mission to save Jellystone Park from the town's mayor who's on a political campaign. Andrew Daly plays Mayor Brown and he actually brings most of the genuine laughs in the film, at least for the adult audience. Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake voiced Yogi Bear and Boo Boo brilliantly.

But even trying to put myself in the mindset of a child, the story does not reach its maximum potential...what little there was for a remake anyway. Sure, the film has humour but it is not funny enough, charming enough, and entertaining enough to pay to see. And Yogi Bear himself contradicts himself throughout the entire film. For such a smart bear, he has a huge problem with listening to directions. Speaking of direction, Cavanagh and Faris' conversations with Yogi Bear and Boo Boo do not often measure up with each other, as sometimes the actors are staring at their marks, which have been placed too high or too low. When the actors are in the same shot as Yogi Bear and/or Boo Boo...well, let's just say that this film does not produce the best effects. It tries though and the kids probably won't even think about that. The cartoonish acting and wild bears may overshadow the negative aspects of the film for young viewers. What can be appreciated about the film, is its innocence in a time when so many films made for children are surprisingly inappropriate. So the film is enjoyable but it could have been way better. If you do find yourself buying this, it had better be because you or your child are big Yogi Bear fans or you are not expecting much and the film is on the sale rack.

DVD Review: Love & Other Drugs

Release Date: March 2, 2011
Rating: R
Running Time: 112 minutes

Academy Award Nominees Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway co-star in “the smartest, sexiest and downright best screen-melting romance of the year” (Parade ). Hathaway delivers an unforgettable performance as the free-spirited Maggie, who meets her match in a charming Viagra salesman named Jamie (Gyllenhaal). Maggie and Jamie leap into a no-strings-attached affair, but no matter how hard they try to keep things “casual,” they can’t help falling under the influence of the ultimate drug...love!

Love & Other Drugs is one of the sweetest and most moving romantic dramedies of 2010. This is a love story unlike so many that are made in Hollywood today as it openly shows the hardships in a relationship with genuine characters and conflicts. What may start out to be a typical love story involving a womanizer and free spirited artist turns down a completely unexpected path when viewers find out about Maggie's Stage One Parkinson's Disease. This is quite a turning point and really changes the characters for the better, even with or especially because of their highs, lows, and everything in between. Everything counts. Everyday matters. What a concept for a relationship in a film taking place in the late 90s, prior to 9/11 and the recession. These are two people who are trying to enjoy life in their own unique way and what they find is love which is far greater than what either of them could have dreamed of. The two are consistently passionate about their love making, so this may not be a film suitable for young viewers.

The supporting cast shines as well, especially Jamie’s younger brother, Josh (Josh Gad) who brings humour in every scene that he is in. There isn't exactly an even balance of humor, relationship drama, medical drama, etc... but it is fair to say that there usually isn't in real life either. The story flows at a steady pace while taking viewers on quite an extraordinary emotional journey with the characters as individuals and as a couple. What is really surprising is the way Jamie is so dedicated to marketing the cure for Parkinson's when there isn't yet a cure. Jamie is more ambitious in this venture than he has ever been about anything but the problem is, he is more dedicated to the cause than Maggie is. Maggie has accepted that there is no cure and is content soaking up her time at the UN-Convention and then heading back to her life. It's an unconventional power struggle and watching this colorful dynamic play out is more than I could have asked for as a viewer. It really makes you think about not just diseases but how disease affect the spouse, family, and friends. These characters are vulnerable and we see it. Characteristics that one may find charming at first turn into the reason why the character becomes unlikable later. But things come around full circle in the end, it's just a matter of how. Watching the how play out is worth it in Love & Other Drugs. This film is very smart and could have gone in so many directions. With what it ultimately came to be and for a story that may have initially seemed to be all about a Viagra salesman falling in love...it turns out to be so much more.

Bonus Features:

Deleted Scenes - There are 3 deleted scenes on this DVD. Two of these scenes include both Anne and Jake. The first scene is unfinished. My favorite scene is the last, when Maggie decides to leave the hotel after seeing Jamie ignore her the entire night yet again for his job. There'a anger, there's humor, there's confusion, and more in this argument. It makes for a great scene but certain lines could have been thrown away and then it would have been perfect for the film. It's a shame this did not make it in.

An Actor's Discussion - Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal along with the Director, Screenplay Writer, & Producer, Ed Zwick, Screenplay Writer, Charles Randolph and Producer, Scott Stuber discuss the characters, their growth in the film, and how Anne and Jake made these characters their own. Anne and Jake also talk about working with each other on Brokeback Mountain and then working on this film now which is interesting since the dynamic obviously grew. This is a great introduction to the character profiles later on in the special features and is great to watch the actors on set working on a few scenes.

Beautifully Complex: Anne Hathaway is Maggie - This is a wonderful character profile led by Anne Hathaway who talks about Maggie's fearlessness and "opening herself up to the reality of herself" as Anne puts it. Anne is so eloquent and so appreciative of this film and this character that her analysis of the character shines and gives viewers more reasons to love Maggie.

Reformed Womanizer: Jake Gyllenhaal is Jamie - This is an interesting character profile led by Jake Gyllenhaal who talks about Jamie's struggle with his inability to truly be responsible and how falling in love with Jamie changes those negative qualities about him. Jake talks about how this character was a breath of fresh air for him which says a lot given the past characters that he has played. He also talks about being closer to the character than he initially realized. This feature in itself makes me appreciate Jake Gyllenhaal more than I ever did. It really made me see him for an actor who is really an artist with his work and

Selling Love & Other Drugs - This film is based on the book, "Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman" by Jamie Reidy. Reidy appears in this feature to talk about being a good salesman. Jake Gyllenhaal mentions that he was a consultant on set and what a fabulous one he was! If any viewer is interested in becoming a salesman, this is the feature for you! This feature also includes Director, Screenplay Writer, & Producer, Ed Zwick, Producer, Scott Stuber, and Actors, Josh Gad and Hank Azaria.

DVD Review: 127 Hours

Release Date: March 2, 2011
Rating: R
Running Time: 94 minutes

From Academy Award winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) comes the powerfully uplifting true story of one man’s struggle to survive against mountainous odds. Aron Ralston (James Franco) has a passion for all things outdoors. But when a falling boulder traps him in a remote Utah canyon, a thrill-seeker’s adventure becomes the challenge of a lifetime. Over the next five days, Ralston embarks on a remarkable personal journey in which he relies on the memories of family and friends--as well as his own courage and ingenuity--to turn adversity into triumph!

127 Hours is one of the most gripping stories of survival that I have seen in a long time. For someone who found himself stuck under a rock in Blue John Canyon in Utah after not telling anybody where he was going, Aron Ralston is incredibly intelligent guy. His survival skills are remarkable and the decision to cut off part of his arm, not knowing if he would bleed to death before he received help...that redefines the word inspirational. The film starts out very simple yet equally as heartbreaking as viewers find the many things that could have helped Aron on his harrowing journey. As the film goes on, the suspense builds and viewers are taken on quite an emotional and physical journey...one that Aron was not prepared to take but in so many ways more prepared than the majority of the viewers. Because he is so intelligent, he never seems to panic or feel defeated which says a lot about his character and optimism throughout.

Aron still has highs and lows...with his cry for help early on and the humour he takes on later in his "morning show," James Franco owns this character. This role could not have been played by anyone else and received the same moving results. And while the film soars because of Franco's brilliant performance, it's not like Buried...more like Castaway in that we do meet other characters and see parts of Aron's life before and after his time being trapped. Another very significant aspect of this film is the directing. The camera angles and shots of not just Franco but of the Canyon as well as the cinematography are spectacular. This film comes together in a way that no one could have envisioned, even knowing the story. Danny Boyle makes the unimaginable as authentic as Aron Ralston experience and what a disturbing one it is but inspiring one to watch.

Bonus Features:

Commentary - The commentary was conducted by director/co-screenwriter, Danny Boyle, producer Chistian Colson, and co-screenwriter, Simon Beaufoy. Of course, it begins with a mention of the Slumdog Millionaire nod in the opening sequence. But the three guys get down to business talking about what was changed from the original story and the photographs and video that are replicated exactly the same way. For instance, in real life, Aron dropped his car keys while stuck not his knife. Though for a more dramatic effect, the knife was chosen. Though all of the photos and video that James Franco took, Aron took. The three also discuss working in the canyon, scoring the film, and Aron's extraordinary resourcefulness among other things. If viewers were intrigued by the film without knowing about Aron's story beforehand, I'd recommend watching the film, reading Aron's memoir, and then watch the commentary.

Deleted Scenes - There are seven deleted scenes, though my personal favorites are "Glad You Made It" and "Four Options." "Glad You Made It" takes place just before the drink montage when Aron is parched and it shows this one shot of Aron's ex-girlfriend and friends on a mountain top. That shot won me over! What a beautiful shot. It is unfortunate that this shot did not make it into the film but thankfully it made it to the DVD format. In "Four Options," Aron is discussing cutting his arm off, which he believes is a suicide mission. His other three options were interesting as well and should definitely be watched by all of have this DVD, if you only watch one part of the special features. As for the "Alternate Ending," well it definitely is not as satisfying as the ending that made it. What I did find interesting was seeing the people who found him at the end in the mountains having more lines and being interviewed about the experience as well as Aron's time in the hospital and more of the aftermath. Though it was all more emotional silent. Though the display of Aron's life today was much better in this ending, as the font was white against a black background which made it much easier to read.

DVD Review: Urgency

Release Date: March 15, 2011
Rating: NR
Running Time: 86 minutes

Every second counts in URGENCY, a breathless thriller starring Brian Austin Green (“Beverly Hills, 90210”, “Desperate Housewives”), Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator, “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”) and Scott William Winters ( “Oz”, Good Will Hunting). Following in the white-knuckle footsteps of the explosive From Paris With Love and Edge of Darkness, this gripping action flick from director Kantz (Love and a Bullet, Wasteland ) arrives on DVD this March…only from Entertainment One

Tony West (Austin Green) is a successful pharmaceutical executive living in LA with his loving wife (Luciana Carro, “Battlestar Galactica”, Blades of Glory). But after a day of tense negotiations, he comes home to find his wife kidnapped, with the kidnappers demanding a $50,000 ransom within 90 minutes or they’ll kill her. Armed with only his wits and his cell phone, he has no choice but to comply. Soon, he realizes that this kidnapping is tied to information that he possesses, and people he knows are willing to kill him to get it. Finally, as Tony unravels the mystery behind his wife’s abduction, he learns that the kidnappers are after more than just money.

Urgency
does not have the most original premise or twists and turns, but if you enjoy watching a man fight for the woman he loves after she has been kidnapped, here is another film for you! After forgetting about his wedding anniversary and giving up on waiting for his home computer to reboot after a file has corrupted it, Anthony West heads to work on the day of a big pharmaceutical deal. When he finally remembers his anniversary, typically thanks to his assistant, he heads home only to find a ransom message waiting on his voice mail.

With the help of his assistant, neighbor, and boss, Tony gathers the $50,000 ransom money along with a wave of pieces to the puzzle of what turns out to be a corporate crime. Probably one of the reasons why this type of story weighs so much is because what the thieves are after can save lives...which means it's worth billions of dollars. Who knew that some people in the pharmaceutical field were really in it for just the money? That is low. This might not be a high budget film, but it is a film that causes the viewers to think about the morality and honesty in one's position and of course how evil the love for money really can be. Predictable stories especially have something significant worth pondering about at its core.

Now at some points the acting from the supporting characters is not top notch but a good story is told through Brian Austin Green, so it makes it worth watching. The music choices were interesting as well. I can understand the idea, but it comes off very corny. And the cinematography is great, though the directing is a bit shaky at times. But at the end of the film, I was overall quite satisfied with the finished product. If you are a Brian Austin Green fan, or like these types of films, you can't be disappointed.

There are no bonus features on this DVD.

DVD Review: Colin & Brad

Release Date: March 8, 2011
Rating: NR
Running Time: 67 minutes

Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood, stars of the Emmy®-winning Whose Line Is It Anyway?, have finally recorded their hilarious live stage show!! These masters of improv comedy have performed their outrageous, one-of-a-kind show to sold out audiences all over the country. Colin and Brad’s TWO MAN GROUPis a riotously funny, interactive, and completely improvised tour de force. Using nothing but their lightning fast wits and some audience volunteers, Colin and Brad create pandemonium on the spot in one of the funniest live shows you will ever see.

Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood bring fans an all new stage show in their cleverly titled DVD, Colin & Brad. Proving just how real improv comedy is, the pair took what viewers loved the most from Whose Line and brought it to Wisconsin and on tour for an hour of brilliant entertainment. Each performance brought its own unique entertainment and what was shot in Wisconsin is what made the cut on the DVD. The two were much more interactive with the audience than we've ever seen before, inviting over two dozen audience members to either come up on stage and assist or interact in the comfort of their seats for about seven scenes. This very basic set up went quite a long way for these guys. They built terrific entertainment for all ages.

One audience member asked the love doctors, "Is it better to be right or be happy?" Their answer..."Being right is overrated." Of course a night of improv just would not be the same for these two without bald jokes and the infamous Torture Game. But the best part of the night had to be the last portion of the show as Colin and Brad were attacked by mouse traps during their opera scene. These guys are improv geniuses and to see them back together playing off of everything they hear and everything out of sight brought a night of laugh out loud comedy and joy that will stick with me for a long time. These guys are just as hysterical and just impressive as they were on Whose Line! If it's true that laughing helps you live longer, it would be smart to play anything with Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood in it, especially their latest stage show.

Bonus Features:

The DOs and DON'Ts of Improv
- In this feature, Colin and Brad share their advice on how to be good at improv. They not only give viewers the Dos and DONTs but why to do or not do these things. They also give two demonstrations which leads up to quite a lot of advice. The pair discuss listening, building onto audience ideas, blocking, setting up the scene within 3 sentences, and one of the most important pieces of advice...finding someone you can work with. The two use humour to drive this advice corner which is full of as much laughs as the stage show.

Interviews with Colin & Brad - Brad Sherwood hosts "Inside the Improv Studio" as he interviews Colin Mochrie about his past work and improv. Shortly after, the roles are switched and Colin hosts "Something from Nothing" as he interviews Brad...or does he? It's quite funny though especially funny seeing how these guys can take anything and make it humorous. Both features are definitely worth the watch!

INSIDIOUS Trailer & Movie Poster

Check out the trailer for the upcoming horror film, INSIDIOUS starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkins, and Barbara Hershey!

The writer-director team behind Saw and the filmmakers of Paranormal Activity redefine the haunted house genre in INSIDIOUS. This horror film is the terrifying story of a family who shortly after moving discover that dark spirits have possessed their home and that their son has inexplicably fallen into a coma. In “My Future Boyfriend” (former working title “Always & Forever”), P-A-X-497/341, aka “Pax” (Barry Watson), a curious young man from the well-ordered but loveless future, travels to present day New Orleans in search of romance novelist Elizabeth Barrett (Sara Rue) – whose book he has come upon during an archaeological dig in the year 3127. “The Hunger Games” chronicles a dystopic Capitol which requires its twelve subjugated districts to pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl, forced to participate in the annual “Hunger Games,” a fight-to-the-death live televised event. Katniss Everdeen’s little sister is chosen in the lottery to participate and Katniss volunteers to take her place. Although persevering through hardship is commonplace for Katniss, she must start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love in order to win the games and return home.

The Hunger Games will release in theaters March 23, 2012.

TV Review - Too Fat for 15: Fighting Back

Tonight, Too Fat for 15: Fighting Back, returns for its second season with an all-new 16 episode order on the Style Network!

The series documents the incredible journeys of a group of obese teens as they bravely fight emotional and physical hurdles to drop hundreds of life-threatening pounds at the acclaimed weight-loss boarding school, Wellspring Academy, in Brevard, N.C. New and returning students enrolled in the school's intense mind/body curriculum adjust to life away from their families, befriend other students who are on similar journeys and come face-to-face with the food and feelings that threaten to end their lives.

Three students from Season One return to Wellspring Academy for Season Two and you'll be surprised at their progress from over the hiatus! After having lost the most weight of the students, 160 pounds in her first semester at Wellspring, Tanisha is 350.5 lbs at the season 2 premiere weigh in! Job well done Tanisha! Scotty, 14, is also back though after an unsuccessful summer away from the academy, having gained 15 pounds. He's starting off the new school year with a very defeated attitude and it is very disheartening to see. Still the youngest student at Wellspring, Emily, 12, from Raleigh, N.C. has lost 55lbs since her first semester but is back to reach her goal weight of 130 lbs.

Joining the academy for their first year are four young students: First there is Rachel, 14, from Greenwich, Conn. whose family back home has decided to get their health in order in support of Rachel. Second is Hayley, 17, from Warren, Mich. who's starting weight surpassed Tanisha's at 511 lbs. This now makes Hayley the largest student in Wellspring history. Prior to her initial weigh-in, Hayley thought she weighed in the high 300's but is surprisingly shocked to learn the truth. Then there's Carsyn, 17, from Warrenton, Va. whose parents are all star athletes, so there's a lot of pressure there to not be at the 203 lbs. that she is currently at. Lastly, there's Lia, 14, from Montrale, N.J. who is as lazy and rebellious as it gets which attributes to her 196 lbs weigh in.

Aside from the emotional first week weigh in and updates on the returning students' successes and struggles, the introductions to the new Wellspring students reels viewers in just as much as last season. As one student talks about avoiding public places to avoid ridicule and one athletic mother talks about her rough relationship with her overweight daughter, it's clear that the students at Wellspring are in the right place. Watching these obese children go on this life-changing journey, probably the most important journey in their life, it is so incredibly inspirational. Not only is it inspiring but it is so exciting to know that (based on the first update) the majority of these kids will succeed in not only keeping the weight off after the school year, but continuing to lose weight on their breaks. The update on the returning students almost makes me want to see the students at home when school is not in session. Talk about temptation and perseverance.

The nutrition culinary instructor, behavioral coaches, and the entire staff are incredibly optimistic, reassuring, and strict in helping these kids get their lives back. It is wonderful to finally see these kids being not just pushed but taught in a positive way to build a healthy lifestyle. But the season 2 premiere gives just a glimpse at the physical and psychological struggles that these young people face all year long. Season 2 will feature the students completing the first annual Wellspring Triathlon, so the premiere really only gives viewers a taste of what there is to expect in regards to major goals. My only concern is for first time viewers, as the premiere does not give an overview as to how Wellspring Academy is run. Still, Too Fat for 15: Fighting Back Season 2 is just as compelling as Season One, so the premiere tonight is not one to be missed!

Too Fat for 15: Fighting Back Season Two Premieres Monday, March 7, 2011 at 8pm on The Style Network.

TV Review: Breakout Kings

Coming to A&E tonight is the all new original drama, Breakout Kings.

Driven by the fact that there are few things more dangerous than a prisoner who has just escaped, and tired of following protocol and resorting to outdated methods of law enforcement, veteran U.S. Marshals Charlie Duchamp (Laz Alonso) and Ray Zancanelli (Domenick Lombardozzi) are taking an unorthodox approach to their work: using former fugitives (Jimmi Simpson, Malcolm Goodwin & Serinda Swan) to catch fugitives.

“Breakout Kings” follows U.S. Marshals Charlie Duchamp (Laz Alonso) and Ray Zancanelli (Domenick Lombardozzi) as they form a special task force composed of the three most elusive convicts Ray ever captured: Lloyd Lowery (Jimmi Simpson), a former child prodigy and behaviorist/psychiatric expert who excels in psychoanalysis; Shea Daniels (Malcolm Goodwin), an ex-gangbanger who knows how to work the system, both in prison and on the street; and Erica Reed (Serinda Swan), a sexy expert tracker who learned her trade from her bounty hunter father. Charlie and Ray also employ the services of Julianne Simms (Brooke Nevin), a civilian who acts as the “funnel” for the group – all information, tips and data go through her.

You are very protective, do you want to talk about it? - Lloyd

The "Pilot" episode of Breakout Kings introduces the two U.S. Marshals who have come together to form a new task force team with three former fugitives in order to chase down fugitives. These ex-criminals include, Lloyd, a psychiatric expert, Shea, the "entrepreneur," and Erica, the ultimate con artist. Probably because of the rewards they are given if they do their job and behave on the job, the three former prisoners work very well together. The same cannot be said for U.S. Marshals, Charlie and Ray who do not seem to have an understanding as to exactly which one of them is leading the team. This makes for a very uncomfortable group environment. Thankfully, their issues do not get completely in the way of the tasks at hand. Otherwise, this show would definitely be unbearable. Also working with the team is Julianne, a civilian who acts as an assistant, more or less.

During their first job, Lloyd persuades Shea into not becoming a fugitive again, easy as it could be without "big brother." Although honestly with these guys not really bringing anything incredibly unique to the table and acting as more consultants and undercover plants without weapons, it is hard to place what is so special about this type of premise...which is already on TV.

Interestingly enough, the problems that both the U.S Marshals and the former fugitives face on the job are not nearly as interesting as Lloyd's personal life. Jimmi Simpson (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) really gives his character life and is definitely the most captivating character in the series. Viewers are teased with two phone calls between Lloyd and his mother and these conversations speak volumes about the relationship between the two. Lloyd seems to be the only one of the three former fugitives who is trying to move from his criminal past and unfortunately, that past is all his mother sees. This relationship is just heartbreaking and it is portrayed in such a perfect way. If there are any emotional moments in the first episode that will get to your head and your heart, they are Lloyd's brief phone calls with his mother. Not only that, but Lloyd's chemistry with con, Erica gives viewers more humour to look forward to in the next 12 episodes.

While Breakout Kings may take three ex-fugitives from various prisons to solve crime in various major cities, it certainly isn't a breakout hit on television. Breakout Kings simply doesn't reach the level of depth and intensity that is exuded from the promos. Some aspects of the show are gritty, but it is just not dark enough, or enough of whatever it aims to be in its tone. After watching episodes 101 and 103, I want The Cleaner back...and since that is not going to happen, I'll stick with Leverage and White Collar. Still, feel free to watch Breakout Kings...it just might find its groove.

Breakout Kings the series premiere airs tonight at 10/9c on A&E.

Guest Blog: A Bundle of Vegan Tips

Written By: Emily from The Vegan Home Chef

When I decided to be vegan, one of my first thoughts was, "Okay, which of my favorite foods do I never get to eat again?" Luckily, many of the things that make life nice on a day-to-day basis, like that morning coffee or glass of wine at the end of the night, are totally vegan. And if you won't be able to live without the whip on top of your latte, there's whipped cashew cream and commercially-produced vegan whipped creams to get you your fix.

There have been several products which have made life so much easier for me as a vegan, and the first and foremost is Earth Balance. It is by far the best butter substitute on the market, and it melts and cooks like butter, too. There are several varieties of the spread, including a soy-free version, and they also make a shortening for baking. I use it constantly.

Also extremely useful has been Better Than Milk, a powdered soy milk, which is wonderful for baking bread. Many recipes call for dry milk, so you can just substitute this. I absolutely believe that it makes for the richest, best tasting loaf of bread. I don't ever buy sliced bread because my father is a frantic baker and is always turning out some new delicious vegan loaf, so as far as vegan bread brands, I'm afraid you're on your own.

One further product I can't cook without is unsweetened, full-fat coconut milk. It doesn't taste like coconut, and it has the rich texture and heft of milk, so it is the hands-down best substitute I've found for cooking and baking. I prefer soy milk in coffee and over cereal and just to drink (chocolate soy milk is a special treat), but coconut milk is the only one I use to cook with. Rice milk and almond milk both have really particular properties that make them useful for certain purposes, so give them a try sometime if you don't want to OD on soy.

Also, never fear: you don't have to give up chocolate. There is no reason to resort to carob chips. Ghirardelli semi-sweet chips are vegan (as are many high-quality dark chocolates), and I've used them with great success in several recipes. If you are a honey fiend like me, agave nectar works beautifully as a substitute, though it is a bit less thick. Still, I don't think that every vegan should necessarily give up honey. If you feel strongly that using the bees for food production is inherently wrong, then more power to you but I personally am very concerned about honeybee populations and live in an area with access to local, ethically produced honey on every corner, so I buy from small beekeepers who keep the bees healthy and out pollinating.

In my first year as a vegan, I've been cautioned by everyone from family members to friends, to near-strangers about a variety of perceived risks of my diet. The Big Two are protein and calcium, and, happily, neither of these is even remotely difficult to get without meat or dairy.

Protein is important, but not in the way that the meat-people think. According to the American Heart Association, most people eat more protein than they need, and the scientific community is beginning to report that this is having major health effects, even beyond those caused by the high fat content of many high-protein foods, including cardiovascular disease, strain on kidneys, and certain cancers. For most of us, getting enough protein isn't an issue; getting quality protein is. Nuts, beans, lentils, whole grains, and many vegetables are great sources. Tempeh is very high in protein, and tofu is reasonably high as well. However, if you're eating a varied and nutrient-rich diet, you shouldn't ever have to worry about protein. Artichokes, collard greens and turnip greens, sesame seeds, tofu, and molasses are all really high in calcium, and many other vegetables, beans, fruits, nuts and seeds are as well. If you're worried about your calcium intake,
just take a multivitamin, and eat your greens.

The only thing that is essential for vegans to supplement is B12, but most soy milks and other milk alternatives are enriched with B12 and other vitamins. You may hear that B12 is only found in meat and dairy, but that isn't entirely true. B12 is synthesized by microbes in the soil (particularly around plant roots) and animals pick it up from eating produce that has been in contact with dirt. In the distant past, humans did the same thing, but now we wash and sanitize produce before consuming it, so we have to get this vitamin elsewhere.

Luckily, if you get really tired of being good, there are lots of vegan things that are terrible for you. Oreos are vegan, as are most potato chips, which are usually cooked in some kind of vegetable oil. French fries at restaurants are likely cooked in the same fryer as chicken fingers or popcorn shrimp, but it's up to you to decide if that's an issue.

Even without junk food, there are lots of vegan indulgences, though being vegan will likely encourage you to look at indulgence differently. You certainly don't have to give up sugar, refined flours, or gluten, go raw, or anything like that. Many people who are vegan for health reasons or are just very health conscious choose to limit or eliminate processed sugars and flours. One reason for this, I suspect, is that if you are eating healthfully as a vegan, your body is "running cleaner" and you feel the effects of everything on your body more clearly. This is certainly something that I've experienced, for better or worse - I used to be able to drink gallons of coffee without feeling the effect, but now I have to treat my body better.

I would like to reassure you, too, that your life does not have to revolve around soy. I’ve been asked many times, “So, what do you eat, like, tofu?” You don’t have to eat tofu at every meal, or ever, if you don't want to. There are lots of great tofu recipes out there, so do some experimenting, but ultimately it doesn't have to own you. Every vegan cookbook seems to have a tofu scramble recipe (like scrambled eggs), and that is a very easy, very filling, often very delicious way to serve it. Marinating and baking tofu is the most common method, and obviously there is a ton of flexibility with the marinade, so you can do anything from a Latin mojo marinade (one of my favorites - in Terry Hope Romero's Viva Vegan) to barbecue sauce. Mastering the marinating time and baking temperature has been a bit tricky for me, and I never seem to get to the exact texture I want, but you can fight that battle for yourself.

Far from being a burden, my veganism has been very freeing for me. If this is something you want to do or try, then the process of discovery is half the fun. Finding vegan options at your favorite restaurants, reading labels at the grocery store, and experimenting in the kitchen are all a part of the process of taking control of how you eat and how you take part in the food economy. If you choose to eat meat and dairy, you can do that consciously as well - just know where your food comes from, and make decisions that you feel good about. We are what we eat, sure, but in the global food economy we benefit from, the whole world is what we eat, and that gives us a lot of power.

Thanks for reading, and I hope I’ll see you soon over at The Vegan Home Chef!

Guest Blog: Top 5 Vegan Recipes

Written by: Emily from The Vegan Home Chef

In keeping with the theme of comfort foods, I'd love to share with you a couple of my favorites vegan dishes! Click the title of the dish for the recipe.

Walnut and Pear CrĂŞpe Gateau with Whipped Cashew Cream - This is satisfying, light, and complex. It's excellent.

Mushroom, Potato and Cabbage Blintzes - This is full-on comfort-food splendor. I made them the first time for friends, and we were all shocked into face-stuffing silence.

Roasted Fennel and Garlic Pizza - I had never worked with fresh fennel before, and it couldn't have turned out better. The home-made crust recipe from my friend Sybil is epic, as well.

Tempeh-pate-stuffed Mushrooms - This dish is great for parties, for dinner, or for the night when you just need a treat. It's my favorite recipe.

Apple-parsnip Latkes with Ginger Spread - This is my first really successful, totally original recipe and it is a great way to get to know the parsnip!

I hope you enjoy these recipes and I'll see you tomorrow for some tips on vegan products, shortcuts, and those pesky myths that we'll all drop dead from lack of protein.
