Twitter Talk: Ali Liebert On Health & Body Image

As part of Young Insight, it was my pleasure to chat with actress, Ali Liebert (Harper's Island, Kyle XY) over Twitter about health & body image. We had a lot to discuss! Take a look at our conversation below (feel free to click the images to enlarge):

Stay tuned for season two of Health Nutz! Don't forget to follow Ali Liebert on Twitter and Hollywood the Write Way on Twitter!

Interview: Nick Robinson on Melissa & Joey Season 2

Season two of Melissa & Joey kicked off to a great start last night and just in time for premiere week, Nick Robinson took some time out to talk to Hollywood the Write Way about what to expect this season. You may remember how much fun I had at a taping of an episode in season one (read my experience here), so I was more than excited to have this opportunity. Thanks Nick!

So what can you tell us about what we can expect from the show this season and your character, Ryder?
Ryder has a lot of love interests this season and we've had a lot of great guest stars. We've had all of the Lawrence brothers, Megan Hilty from Wicked on Broadway, and a lot of other great people.

Having experience in the theatre, I'm interested to know which Broaday actors you would like to see guest star.
I don't know, there are a lot of great shows out there right now. Daniel Radcliffe is doing “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and to work with Daniel Radcliffe or umm... well, a friend of mine actually did "A Little Night Music" with Catherine Zeta-Jones. It would be great to work with her or Angela Lansbury. There are a lot of great actors out there right now.

You mentioned that Ryder has a few love interests. Can you go more into detail about that and talk about his growth from last year to this year and any challenges that you faced as an actor bringing that to life?
Well I had my first on screen kiss which was fun. Rachel Fox plays my girlfriend and she really talented so that was fun having her own. It was great as a whole to watch the writers develop this character and watch as Ryder develops more. He does come out of his shell more. Before, I think he was very cautious and just trying to navigate his way through and now Ryder is feeling more comfortable with Joey and Melissa so he branches out a bit.

What would you say is your favorite aspect about working in front of a live audience?
It was great for me because I didn't have a whole lot of film experience. It's like theatre so it is a nice transition to be in front of a live audience. It's similar to theatre in that way. You feed off of their energy and they give us a great jump start.

I noticed during the taping that I went to last season, quite a bit of variation in lines from take to take but how much improv do you and Taylor get to do?
I haven't done a whole lot of improv but Melissa and Joey are great about that. Sometimes when the director yells, "Cut" they'll keep throwing lines back and forth. Sometimes it gets cut but sometimes what they say makes it in. They are a great example of that kind of back and forth repor.

What have you learned so far this season from both Melissa and Joey?
They have really smart careers. They've navigated Hollywood and haven't gone down the path that the stereotypical child actor has gone down. That's the path that I want to be on, to stay true to yourself, stay humble... and they've also taught me the basics of film like where to stand on my mark and the difference between cameras and stuff like that.

Last season there was a Halloween episode. What holiday or themed episode can we expect this year?
Well, with the love interest story line, there's a bit of a Valentine's Day kind of thing. The holiday episodes are a lot of fun so I would expect to see some more later on.

Do you watch the episodes each week or do you not like watching yourself on screen?
I really don't like watching myself. Sometimes I'll watch if all my siblings are there and they want me to sit down but there's just something about watching that weirds me out. It's kind of like how when some people don't like hearing their voice recorded, it's kind of the same thing.

Are you interested in directing or writing later down the line?
Yeah! I think that most actors have to branch out. Your whole world can't be acting. Expand your interests and see what else is out there, producing, directing, writing. I'd love to get the opportunity to do all of that.

Now since you are from Seattle but moved to LA, what would you say are your favorite aspects about LA?
At first, I wasn't really sure to think about LA. It was a whole new environment. I've been spending most of my time down here but my family still lives in Seattle. But LA, it's very diverse. There are so many communities that I love like Studio City and Santa Monica. You've just got to find your community and stick with it because the entire LA area can be kind of daunting. I also really love that you can be 10-20 minutes from the beach and also close to the desert. It's kind of fun in that way.

Back to Broadway for a moment, is there a musical or play that you are itching to be a part of? Are you involved in the theatre community out in LA?
One show that I really, really enjoyed when I saw it was Cabaret. It is a great story and that would be fun. Fiddler on the Roof, something like that too. Though I haven't had a lot of time in LA but I want to get more involved. Most of the work that I've done in theatre has been in Seattle but I would love to go to NY at some point. If I could do a play there On or Off Broadway, that would be a lot of fun.

Lastly, what are your other upcoming projects outside of Melissa & Joey?
A couple of months ago, I wrapped filming in Toronto of a Disney movie, Frenemies which will be coming out in 2012. Aside from that, I have just been laying low and traveling, exploring California.

Melissa & Joey airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on ABC Family.

Seventeen + ABC Family Come Together In An Effort To Delete Digital Drama

On Tuesday, July 5th, Seventeen Magazine and ABC Family are launching the "Delete Digital Drama" Campaign to bring awareness to the youth issue of online bullying.

First, on July 5th, t-shirts with the word [delete] printed on them will be available at the mall-based retailer Charlotte Russe with 100% of the proceeds donated to the non-profit organization StompOutBullying.org. Also on July 5th, Seventeen magazine’s August issue will be on newsstands. This issue will focus on "Delete Digital Drama" and will feature personal stories from readers and ABC Family talent about their own experiences with bullying.

Then, the “Rally to Delete Digital Drama” is scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 14th at 4PM PT at The Americana at Brand in Glendale, CA. The rally will include appearances by ABC Family talent including Shay Mitchell (“Pretty Little Liars”), Daren Kagasoff (“The Secret Life of the American Teenager”), Skyler Samuels (“The Nine Lives of Chloe King”), Grey Damon (“The Nine Lives of Chloe King”), Katie Leclerc (“Switched at Birth”), Vanessa Marano (“Switched at Birth”) and Emily Osment (“Cyberbully”); Seventeen magazine’s editor-in-chief Ann Shoket; and a surprise musical performance, as well as an autograph signing and premium giveaways.

ABC Family will then air a two-hour original movie, Cyberbully, starring Emily Osment (“Hannah Montana”), Kelly Rowan (“The OC”) and Kay Panabaker (“No Ordinary Family”), premiering on Sunday, July 17th at 8/7c. Expect the debut of the PSA featuring Emily Osment throughout the broadcast.

Cyberbully follows Taylor Hillridge (Emily Osment), a teenage girl who falls victim to online bullying, and the cost it takes on her as well as her friends and family. Taylor is a pretty seventeen-year-old student dealing with her parents' recent divorce and painfully aware of her lower social status in high school. When her mom gives her a computer for her birthday, Taylor is excited by the prospect of going online to meet new friends without her mother always looking over her shoulder. However, Taylor soon finds herself the victim of betrayal and bullying while visiting a popular social website. Obsessed with the damaging posts, she begins to withdraw from her family and friends, including her life-long best friend, Samantha Caldone (Kay Panabaker). Tormented and afraid to face her peers at school, Taylor is pushed to an extreme breaking point. It is only after this life-changing event that Taylor learns that she is not alone – meeting other teens, including a classmate, who have had similar experiences. Taylor's mom, Kris (Kelly Rowan), reels from the incident and takes on the school system and state legislation to help prevent others from going through the same harrowing ordeal as her daughter.

Verizon has also joined the movement with a call-to-action text campaign. Beginning July 5th, Verizon Wireless customers can text “Delete” to 3332 to pledge their support to end digital drama. Verizon will premiere the Delete Digital Drama awareness announcement on FiOS TV, as well as the mobile company’s V CAST video on Demand.

We can also show our support for the campaign by adding a Delete Digital Drama badge to our Facebook and Twitter profile photos. These “Twibbons” will be available on ABCFamily.com, Seventeen.com, Twibbon.com and Facebook shortly. I will definitely be participating in this cause and I hope that you all can spread the word about this campaign as well!

iTunes Movie Spotlight: Red Riding Hood

Release Date: June 14, 2011
Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 100 minutes

Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) directs a fantasy thriller that puts a haunting twist on the classic fairy tale. For years the villagers of Daggerhorn have maintained an uneasy truce with a werewolf – but the beast changes the stakes by killing the older sister of beautiful young Valerie (Amanda Seyfried). Promised in marriage to one man but in love with another, Valerie has her life dramatically affected yet again by the creature’s bloody actions. When a werewolf hunter warns that the beast takes human form by day and walks among them, panic sets in as the death toll rises. And Valerie learns she has a unique connection to the wolf that inexorably draws them together, making her both suspect…and bait. Gary Oldman, Billie Burke, Shiloh Fernandez, Max Irons, Virginia Madsen, Lukas Haas and Julie Christie also star.

Red Riding Hood
is a great "Who Done It?" murder mystery, not a horror as it may have been marketed to be. There's also a bit of a romance, a love triangle but it failed to peak my main interest, given all that is going on in this little community what with a werewolf killing the residents one by one. It's a much more exhilarating take on the classic tale compared to other spins of the tale that I have seen. I say this because this film is dark and creepy and just sexy enough not to distract from the mystery at hand. It will have you on your toes, thinking about who the killer is at every moment. At the same time, this film had the potential to be so much more but the pacing is just a bit too slow to really take it to a higher level. Plus, there was not nearly enough of Gary Oldman as I anticipated. But if you go in with certain expectations of just having fun with it while not being completely blown away by the characters (most of which do not have as much depth as I anticipated, but that could have been part of the "mystery" strategy I guess), dialogue, and the pacing of the story in each scene, there's something to enjoy here. Plus, there's just enough gore for the people who don't like it and the people who don't mind.

Of course, it is best to watch with the latest version of iTunes and in full screen mode. If you are doing other things on your laptop while watching the movie, chances are, there will be a slight delay between the audio and the visuals because of the memory you are eating up. If you've got the right cord to hook your laptop to your TV to watch the film, this is the perfect movie to watch on a big screen television. The bigger, the better as the cinematography for this film is extraordinary and reason alone to watch! So make sure to rent or buy Red Riding Hood today so you can find out who the wolf is that's been killing all of the residents and what becomes of that wolf in this updated classic.

Red Riding Hood is available now! Watch it your way On Demand and For Download.

Interview: Callie Thorne Talks Necessary Roughness

As Rescue Me soon enters its final season, Callie Thorne fans can catch her in the lead role as Dr. Dani Santino on the new USA Network original series, Necessary Roughness. Thorne had a lot to say about her character and what to expect in the first season in a recent interview. Check it out below:

"Necessary Roughness" centers on Dr. Dani Santino (Callie Thorne) a Long Island psychotherapist whose personal life unravels when she finds her husband cheating. Diving fully into her work, she takes on the challenge of rehabbing a bad boy professional football player (Mehcad Brooks) whose off-the-field antics threaten his career and the team franchise. Underestimated at every turn, she succeeds beyond expectations and soon finds herself as the most sought-after therapist for high-profile clients. Athletes, entertainers, politicians and others living in the spotlight clamor for her unique brand of tough love therapy during their moments of crisis. Although her career is re energized, it wreaks havoc on her life as a newly minted single mom of two teenagers. Recognizing her ability to change people’s lives, she’s determined to strike a balance between both worlds. The series also stars Marc Blucas and Scott Cohen.

What was it about the premise of the show and your character that made you want to be a part of this project?
I think initially really the fact that it was a true story and that it was based on a real woman, a real extraordinary woman is why I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the script and read it in the first place. To me, that automatically means that a story’s going to be that much more rich and that much more layered... If Dr. Donna is there especially in the writing room it just means that everything’s going to be that much more true, that much more grounded.

And I was right. I read the script, I flew through it and it felt so honest and based out of a real kind of truth then even when I got to meet her. Once I landed the role and I got to meet her it all sort of fell into place so perfectly. There’s a spirit about her that fills up the entire page which then makes it that much easier to go ahead and get in front of the camera and try to sort of tell her story.

What advice or insight has Dr. Donna given you that you’ve taken in to your character?
Before we shot the Pilot, she and I got to meet in New York City and I was very nervous to do so. But she is such an amazing energy. The minute we hugged, it was one of those things we both sort of put our hands out to shake each other’s hands but just went oh never mind, and we gave each other a big hug. And from that moment on, you know even through that first meal together and then through the course of the Pilot, because she was with us in Atlanta every day that we were shooting, I was so grateful just to hang out with her. It wasn’t so much about research and researching her actual history. We did a lot of talking about that and the sort of steps she took through her career. but what was important to me mostly was I just wanted to soak up her spirit because I think that’s partly what makes her so extraordinary and her story so extraordinary.

She was always around to answer any questions I had about cognitive behavioral therapy or hypnotherapy and she had given me a great list of books to read up on. And it was more important to me that she just be around because I also was concerned that she was happy and she felt good about what we were shooting every day. She makes you feel very safe. When she was around, it sort of made everything just a little bit more heightened. And that helped me in terms of my own storytelling. Though the show isn’t a documentary, it’s a show that is inspired by her. It’s still very important to me that I represent her in the right way.

What do you find most challenging about the role?
Let’s see, that’s a good question. I think that in any role that you have, whether it’s on TV or film, it can be hard to do comedy and drama. And within one story. I think I thought that’s what was going to be hard. But again because it’s a true story and so many of these things that happen in the episodes are all things that really happened to her for the most part, it doesn’t feel like a pendulum swinging from like here’s a really funny scene and then here we go to a touching scene.

It’s a very smooth journey through each episode. And I think that’s what I thought was going to be so hard and it wasn’t. It’s actually one of the easier things. I think what’s hard for me is she’s a therapist but because she’s not as formal, she’ll go to the football field, she’ll go to the bar where the football player is partying instead of showing up to practice. Sometimes it’s hard for me as Callie not to play her even more maternal, in terms of the comfort level. It’s hard for me to sometimes remember that there still is a boundary of the therapist and the client.

So I do have to sort of mark myself that way, but that’s what’s great about her, Dr. Donna’s always available for me to call her and say, "Isn’t it hard for you sometimes not to want to hug your client? If they’re crying don’t you just want to hug them?" And she says, "I absolutely do." I think that’s an interesting challenge of the show for me.

Going from a show like Rescue Me where you are one of many cast members and now you being the lead and the center, how has that been for you as an actor?
Yeah, it was a really big transition, I’m not going to lie, I was very nervous about that because starting in television for me, that was 1997 when I joined Homicide as an ensemble cast. Since then... I was very nervous about that kind of being number one on the call sheet change. In terms of Rescue Me and seven seasons of watching Denis Leary sort of be a master number one on the call sheet, and it was kind of like a master class, I didn’t know what I was soaking up from him.

But you know it is weird being the person that’s there from sunrise to sunset while all the other actors sort of come in and do these scenes and then they leave and someone else comes in, I’m the constant. But it’s interesting because I don’t feel like I’m the lead, because the scenes are so rich with these other characters and because the actors are all so... I think it took a long time to cast this Pilot and for good reason. They took such great care in every character. It didn’t matter if someone was a lead or they’re farther down on the call sheet so to speak. It still feels kind of ensemble to me because each moment with each character is equally important.

Even if it’s two thirds of a scene with my daughter, that scene is equally as important as a four page scene with Mehcad. I think the hardest thing for me to master in terms of shifting jobs like that is shooting one episode while learning the next episode. Because I’m used to getting the script, I’ll learn my couple scenes, I’ll go in two or three times a week, bam, bam, boom I’m out there. And that is the exact opposite of what’s happening here. At first I was scrambling a little bit because I wanted to be able to be overly prepared as I am in my other jobs and that’s a real ass kicker. You really have to buckle down, but I found that I actually kind of thrive on it and I love shooting. (I'm) shooting scenes of Episode 4 but at lunch I’m studying scenes for Episode 5 and I’m very good at sort of compartmentalizing all of it. Though it’s new and could have been really scary I love it. I love it.

Dr. Dani is somebody who helps others with therapy and whatnot, but who is her go to person?
Well I think that there's her friends definitely, she has her best friend Jeanette, the genius Amanda Detmer and I think in the beginning her relationship with Marc Blucas’s character Matt is not quite yet that person. Because they’re sort of walking that romance will they, won’t they line or do they keep everything business wise, so he’s not quite somebody yet that she can turn to when she needs help. Her mother’s totally off her rocker. I think part of what pushes the story, that who does she turn to for help? Maybe Nico might turn out to be somebody surprisingly that she can turn to.

I kind of like that she doesn’t have someone yet, you know what I mean? I like that where we find her in terms of that she’s newly divorced and she’s a newly single mom. And the job is being shifted into new gears, I like this that everything at home is still kind of being figured out and that the audience is figuring it out at the same time that she is figuring that stuff out. I think that’s what makes it extra interesting.

How do you most identify with your character Dani or with Dr. Donna who’s the inspiration for it?
I think that the things I most connect with is the idea of not giving up. It’s something that Dr. Dani and obviously because of Dr. Donna that it really is one of the things that she works with her patients in therapy. The bottom line really is to not give up on yourself and that’s an ongoing thing that I have in my own life that you sort of have to trust your instincts and just keep trying. And if you come up against a brick wall, you’ve sort of got to figure out which way you want to go, up or around. It’s all about the attempt and that’s what I connect with, that not only is she sort of trying to teach people that herself but it’s a daily lesson and a daily exercise for me.

Can you talk about your relationship with the rest of the cast?
In terms of Marc Blucas playing the trainer and Scott Cohen playing - I guess we’d call him the fixer or the enforcer. We still don’t know really what his job is which I love. The connections that Dr. Dani has with all these people, with her kids, with her mom, with her best friend and then subsequently with each guest sort of patient that we have each week, it’s kind of like what I was saying before.

Even if it’s just a short scene the writers have done such an amazing job of what these connections are with these men that she’s working with, with these children - they’re rebellious teenagers. They’re at that period of time where they’re wanting to buck the system and their parents are getting divorced and so they’re figuring out all those kind of manipulations of life. Well dad would let us, you know dealing with all that stuff. And in that way because the connections are all so strong everything feels like an A story rather than there being A, B, C, D stories during the course of one episode. And I guess that’s what I mean in - why I feel like it’s an ensemble, everything feels as important as the next, each character, each interaction feels as important as the next. And that’s really what ensemble means to me.

Can you talk a little bit about bonding with the cast during the filming of the Pilot in Atlanta, GA?
I think it had so much to do with us being out of an industry town. It was very similar to - I had mentioned Homicide earlier, Homicide was shot in Baltimore and it’s very much the same feeling when you’re not in an industry town where you know hundreds of other actors and you can go do stuff after work with people that you’ve known for years.

With us being in Atlanta for the Pilot, all of us were together for about a week before we shot and then it was a month and a half that we had to shoot the Pilot. We were given a sort of perfect amount of time, we didn’t feel rushed, that we were kind of just kind of all passing each other by, doing scenes. It sort of felt like a luxury that we got to work really hard on a story that we all really wanted to tell. And so then when we would wrap at night we all still wanted to hang out, which is a rarity. You know sometimes when you’re working with people and situations it’s so concentrated you kind of are like okay, that’s great, see you tomorrow.

But I think because we were in a town that none of us had family here or had worked here before so it was all sort of exciting. We’d all go to a different restaurant every night or the weekends we sort of couldn’t wait to make a plan. Now I have to admit I’m making it sound like I did a ton of socializing. I rarely got to go out that much during the Pilot but when I did, I was so grateful for this particular group of actors and the crew. We all got really tight. And I think that we were lucky for it because I think it showed up on camera. It definitely shows up on screen and when the series got picked up and we all came back here it was like we were all sort of coming back to our own little sort of playground. We thankfully all enjoy each other so much and we all think each other is so funny, so we have a really, really good time together. Knock on wood because that is not always true.

For a therapist, Dani is pretty clueless about how her family is falling apart.
Yes. Well I think that is part of what I love about the Pilot so much is that she thought she had a perfect normal life, like a stable, lovely suburban life. And everything kind of blows up in her face and she in a way is scrambling to keep it together. I think you see people’s true character in that kind of environment.

What happens to people when they fail or feel like they’re about to fail, what is it that they do then? I think that’s where you can sort of see someone’s true heart. Because this is all coming out of a real life story, I think it’s something that audiences can really connect with, whether they have been in this kind of situation, whether they have been divorced or you know whatever. I think that the stories are so well told that people will kind of dig watching her navigate her way through all this new - everything is just new. And that’s why it’s so much fun to play and hopefully why it will be so much fun to watch.

In the Pilot we see the beginning of this relationship with Mack but we are also really intrigued by your character’s dynamic with Nico. So are we going to see some sort of love triangle there?
No, I think that that was kind of a delightful accident that happened during the Pilot... But I think that after all was said and done and the show was put together - because the relationship is so different between she and Matt and she and Nico that it does kind of set it up for a delicious place for there to be a possible triangle.

And the way things have been going not that there’s like flirting going on between Dani and Nico, but that there is an energy between them that’s like why you - I’m going to pound you but really you just sort of know that they kind of find each other interesting. There’s an ongoing thing where my character’s always trying to get him to smile, like cracking a joke or doing something dumb and whether or not you know it works we sort of always play with that because it’s also very fun to watch Nico/Scott Cohen crack. I like that they’re letting us play with that a little bit because while there is the fascinating part of the Matt and Dani role they won’t say, it takes it a little bit further than the formula to have there also be this question of Dani and Nico. Whether that would become a romantic relationship or that he would become someone like a confidant to her.

It’s interesting that on Rescue Me, Sheila was very nutty and...
Bi-polar.

And now you’re playing the exact opposite, a psychotherapist, but is there anything from Sheila that you can see in Dani?
No. Nothing. The only thing in Sheila that I can see in Dani is that Dr. Dani would love to get her hands on Sheila, maybe help Sheila a little bit. But you know that certainly is one of the reasons I was so excited to get this role because they’re like photographic negative images of each other, these two women.

And I always say that playing stability is equally as hard as playing instability. It’s not like it’s easier to tell a story just because someone’s not like ripping their hair out and throwing themselves at people and lighting things on fire. But it’s a different level of complexity with Dr. Dani and the things that she’s dealing with and that she is coming from - Sheila a megalomaniac and she’s very lonely and she’s very desperate and very greedy. Dr. Dani really wants to give instead of take. It’s all about the giving. So I think that really was a trigger for me, you know I wanted to learn more about that.

And who would say has been your favorite client for Dani so far?
My favorite client is always going to be TK because he’s the first. It’s always going to be Mehcad Brook’s character, even though each episode so far, we’re in Episode 5 right now, each client patient that’s come in, the stories have been so great and so out of the box, in terms of like a professional poker player and the one right now is a professional skateboarder. And we had a race car driver, a war reporter - there’s no end to the variety of these characters that are going to come to her for help. But I think TK’s always going to have this special spot in her heart because he will have been the first and he will always be the sort of constant patient.

I know you have experience in theater so can we expect any guest stars that have also worked in theater?
Each time the new cast comes in I’m floored by the people that they’re getting in terms of like we’ve had Matt Barr who plays the race car driver and Nick Bishop who I love also who’s on Body of Proof with Dana Delany. I know he’s done a lot of theater and Amanda Detmer who plays one of my best friends, she comes from the theater and I know that Scott Cohen has been doing theater for as long if not longer than I have. So the energy on our set is sort of propelled by the fact that we’ve got people who are very experienced in all forms of acting. And even the people that may not have a theater background, they’re ready to play, they’re ready to explore in the same way that you can when you are doing theater.

We’ve sort of set up this wonderful environment on our show that though it is a television show that it’s scripted, that you know you have to know your lines. A lot of times we’re allowed to play and improv whether or not that makes it on screen you never know. And you shouldn’t think of it that way, but it definitely makes a difference in the energy which then sort of plays its way into the chemistry between all the actors.

That’s interesting that you mentioned that you had a chance to improv because that was going to be my next question.
We don’t do it all the time because the scripts are so good and there’s a reason for you know each word so specifically. On Rescue Me it was set up differently. What we would do is we would shoot a scene as written and then Denis would say okay, we’ve got that. Now let’s just make sure we get from A to Z and go. A lot of what we would improv especially for the guys in the firehouse kitchen scenes, those were all mostly improv stuff, but that was meant to be from the beginning. That I think is what Denis Leary and Peter Tolan had always done, that was their idea for the show, they wanted that to always be part of the creating process.

So it was a completely different from the get go. I was really pleased that I wasn’t expecting it but I was really pleased that the writers and creators are open to us improving sometimes or they’re even more open to us coming and saying, "There’s this scene that we have in the next episode. And I have an idea, do you think that we could try this?" There’s a saying when you say "on the day," which means when you are actually in front of the camera, you say, "On the day do you think that I might throw this line out instead of that line?" And they’re amazingly open to our ideas because they thankfully trust us as a troupe to create alongside with them. But you know then the flip side of it is, a lot of times we have nothing to say, we just love already what we’re saying and we don’t want to ruin the rhythm of what the writers have created. But it definitely is the best of both worlds for sure.

Do you think that your personality kind of makes you especially good for these kind of feisty roles?
Yeah, I think so. It has to be a mixture of trust in terms of who you’re working with and who’s writing for you and who you’re acting for, you know who your bosses are in terms of how much of your own personality you do bring to a role. I’ve been really blessed in that a lot of the jobs I’ve had and most especially this one that they urge me to bring a lot of my own personality which is - in terms of what I was saying earlier on about the fact that "Necessary Roughness" isn’t a documentary about Dr. Donna. It is an inspiration and so they are open to me bringing my own energies and some of my own you know I’m a weirdo.

And I have a lot of my own quirks and strange physical behaviors which, trust me, I have to reign in most of the time because some people are like that’s not funny, don’t do that. But I’m very lucky here in this environment that they do urge me to bring that along with me. So there’s a lot of times in the scripts where though I may not have been in a situation that Dr. Donna has been in and I can’t necessarily pull from it, what I can do is say to myself do it sort of as an as if. What would I do as if I was in this particular situation, having this conversation you know that was going this way, how would it make me feel. And I can add that in. I’m very grateful for that because sometimes it makes things a little bit easier.

As you have done a lot of guest star spots in other USA shows, is there anybody from USA that you would like to bring on as a guest to this show?
Oh, I want to bring all of them. I want to bring Mark from Royal Pains, I want to bring Matt from White Collar, I want Jeffrey Donovan over here, I want Gabrielle Anwar, I want them all. I want them all to have a problem and you know have an issue. They can come as their characters.

Last but not least, how is your relationship with the the young actors who play your children?
I love them. Patrick and Hannah are two of the most extraordinary young people I’ve ever met in my life. They’re unbelievably excited to be on this show which makes a difference in everything. They’re so happy to be where they are but they also happen to be incredibly gifted and are way ahead of their years in terms of the wisdom. For whatever reason my scene work with them always flies by, we’re always like oh, we’re done? You got that already? The three of us seem to click very well and we have very much the same sense of humor. And so when the three of us are together, there is a little bit of a spark. I don’t know what it’s like to have children, but there is something when I’m with them that I go into momma mode and even when we’re between scenes and I get to sit with them and hang out which I love. I love hanging out with them because they’re so funny. But I definitely feel very motherly towards them and I’m constantly going wait, what? What did you say? What happened? Who said that to you? Well here’s what you should do. I’m always throwing advice at them that they’re not asking for but it’s because I just adore them.

When they were casting the roles of my kids, I didn’t have the opportunity to do any kind of chemistry read with them. So it very much was that I was just trusting that they were going to cast a couple of great kids, but they went far beyond what they could have done by finding these two. I really think that both of them are going to have really long careers. And I’m very excited that they’re with me on this show.

DVD Review: Stargate Universe: Season 2

Had I not sat through the first ever Stargate Universe panel at San Diego Comic Con, I can honestly say that I would not have watched this show. Thank God for Comic Con! Having seen a handful of episodes from the Stargate franchise before and not having been all that intrigued, I was completely taken aback by SGU and it quickly became one of my favorite sci-fi shows. Now, I am happy to say that I am on a mission to watch the other shows in the Stargate franchise. Anyway, as the show entered its second and final season, I was very disappointed to find out (as so many others did on Twitter) that one of the most compelling sci-fi series currently (at the time) on television was coming to an end. But with commentary included for every single episode of the season, I am excited to re-watch the series this summer and relive the magic once more. But for now, let's get to the special features...

Release Date: May 31, 2011
Rating: NR
Running Time: 16 hours, 43 minutes

STARGATE: UNIVERSE Complete Season 2 continues the saga of an unlikely group of cosmic explorers aboard the spaceship Destiny as it soars to the furthest corners of the galaxy. Struggling to control the ship’s systems, the crew suffers from a lack of supplies and no knowledge of its final destination. Tempers flare and personalities clash—especially between Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle, Trainspotting) and Colonel Young (Louis Ferreira, Dawn of the Dead), who struggle for leadership of the group—as they face uncharted space and unknown enemies who would take the ship by force. Through it all, the Destiny crew must persevere in their struggle to stay alive, bond together, and find a way back home to Earth.

Bonus Features:

Commentary - There is commentary for every single episode of the second and final season of Stargate Universe. For this reason alone, this is my favorite television show on DVD this year and my number one favorite television show on DVD period. There's a lot of fun and games and there's plenty of insight given and technical details shared for fans to mull over and soak up for quite some time. Fans will absolutely love re-watching the season with the cast and crew, which is detailed below by episode.

Disc 1
Robert Carlyle Directs "Pathogen"
(4:16 minutes) - Executive producer, Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper discuss Cooper's directorial debut on SGU as footage on set of the episode, "Pathogen" is show. It's quite fun to see Cooper in his directing element on set rather than being the one taking direction, especially for one of the first episodes of the season. This was no easy task and Cooper did a fabulous job so it was rewarding to be able to see a bit of what led up to the finished product.

Andy Mikita Directs (2:06 minutes) - Andy Mikita and executive producer, Paul Mullie are on set of SGU when Mikita is behind the lens but this feature is far too short and barely even touches the surface of the genius behind Mikita's work. I did like that the changes in shooting on location was included because it shows how unpredictable a day of filming can be, no matter how well planned out the day of shooting is. Great inclusion of this matter! Though the feature is still far too short to really appreciate.

Eli’s Mom Comes on Board (3:11 minutes) - Executive producer, Carl Binder leads this feature as he makes it a point to express the rarity of a loved one's visit on Destiny, as well as delight in the chemistry between the actors not just when Eli's mom comes on board but when Eli visits his mother. Because Eli is such a favorite on board Destiny, it was very important to dedicate a feature to him and all that he is on the DVD, and this episode did that justice - even though it was a bit short. It is definitely worth the watch.

Brian J. Smith’s First Fight (2:26 minutes) - Actor, Brian J. Smith is seen training with stunt coordinator, James "BamBam" Bamford during rehearsal, behind the scenes on set, and on set for the final scene in this feature. This is the first of many features that include Brian J. Smith, so if you like this, you'll enjoy plenty more of the other features.

Crashing a Shuttle (4:08 minutes) - Executive producer, Robert C. Cooper and Visual FX Supervisor, Mark Savela are on set with special effects coordinator, Wray Douglas as the crew shoots a model plane for the big shuttle crash scene in "Aftermath." This is perhaps the coolest feature on the DVD because a split screen of the final cut of the shuttle crash and the vfx elements cut is shown and it is really quite fascinating. The guys talk about combining real life elements with CG which I have found more and more interesting over the years, especially with television so this may be an eye opening feature for some but a sweet treat for others. This feature is definitely a must see! You'll get to see first hand just how out of the box the people behind this show are to give us the most incredibly visually engaging show possible.

The Seed Ship with Joe Mallozzi (3:20 minutes) - Executive producer, Joseph Mallozzi is on set during the episode, "Awakening" and gives viewers a tour of the Seed Ship, which is older than Destiny. For those incredibly interested in the Seed Ship, this is a fabulous feature. But even if you're not, it is still worth the watch. Mallozzi gives great insight about certain things while giving the tour!

Saying Goodbye to Sgt. Riley (2:59 minutes) - In one of the most meaningful features on the DVD, this feature says goodbye to actor, Haig Sutherland who talks about his time on the set before his big farewell. Actor, Patrick Gilmore gives an informal interview with Sutherland on the set and footage of the cast and crew giving him a round of applause on his last day packed quite an emotional punch for those viewers who were invested in the character of Sgt. Riley. Sutherland's goodbye speech was also shown, which was short, simple, but very sweet and will not be forgotten, especially thanks to the fact that it is on this DVD. Having this feature on the DVD shows the viewers how much every member of this ensemble show really matters. The cast and crew and the team behind picking the special features really care about each other and what the fans want and this feature displays that so well. Job well done.

Lou Diamond Phillips on Guest Stars (2:02 minutes) - Lou Diamond Phillips briefly talks about less than a handful of the SGU guest stars, including Victor Garber, David Hewlett... and aliens. Oh, actually that's really all this feature was about... Phillips working with the aliens, what with the language barrier and the aliens not getting some of the jokes on set and in the script. This was probably one of my least favorite features, as it was quite misleading and did not give any insight as to what Phillips thought about working with many of the guest stars or at least what he thought about their contribution to SGU.

Disc 2
Lt. Scott Gets Hit By A Car
(3:01 minutes) - This feature follows actor, Brian J. Smith on the set of the episode "Cloverdale" during the scene in which his character gets hit by a car. The feature gives a step by step look at the behind the scenes of this scene as well as a post-hit interview with stunt performer, Brent Connolly. As "Cloverdale" is one of my favorite episodes of the season, it was a lot of fun watching Smith, Connolly, Stunt Coordinator, James "BamBam" Bamford, and executive producer, Brad Wright give viewers commentary every step of the way during filming of the car stunt. While a short feature, it packs in quite a lot of great footage so be sure to watch.

Inside Cloverdale with Brad Wright (3:37 minutes) - Executive producer, Brad Wright talks about the episode, "Cloverdale" which is one of the most unique episodes of the series. This feature was disappointing only because it was so short in length. Could anybody else sit through an all day analysis of just this episode alone? I could.

How to Get Sucked Into Space (3:07 minutes) - Actor, Brian J. Smith, Stunt Coordinator, James "BamBam" Bamford, and Director, Andy Mikita take viewers into rehearsals for Smith and on the set of the episode, "Trial and Error" where Smith's character is sucked into space. Whoever had control of deciding what made it to the bonus features did a fabulous job because there is plenty of Brian J. Smith and plenty of intriguing behind the scenes footage that will make fans appreciate all of the work that went into this show. Great job with this feature!

SG-U Welcomes You to New Mexico’s Bisti Badlands (19:41 minutes) - This feature takes viewers off set and on location shooting in New Mexico! Robert Knepper's interview was quite entertaining and inspiring. To see him so happy doing what he does will make so many smile and encourage others to be just as happy as he looked on location. He loves his job and you can clearly tell in this feature. Also showcased were the topics of scouting, how the weather effects shooting equipment, shooting documentary/theatre style, etc... Perhaps because the DVD features a very lengthy extra off set, they've got my viewership for all of the rest of the extras. This location that the cast and crew shot at was one of my favorite settings on the show, so you can imagine my delight. You will be pleased with the behind the scenes footage that was acquired as well. Also appearing in this feature are executive producers, Robert C. Cooper, Brad Wright, actors, Robert Carlyle, Brian J. Smith, Jamil Walker Smith, Julia Benson, Director of Photography, Jim Menard, and 1st AD, Bill Mizell.

Disc 3
Deconstructing Destiny
(27:24 minutes) - Actor, Patrick Gilmore hosts this featurette which is split up in a number of segments (Power, Weapons, Shields, FTL Drive, The Ancient Chair, Communication Stones, and The Bridge) as the executive producers talk about the different components of Destiny... how Destiny works. What I found to be very interesting was the mention of creating the rules in this sci-fi world. This is a fantastic deconstruction of Destiny that many fans will appreciate. Appearing in this feature are executive producers, Brad Wright, Carl Binder, Joseph Malozzi, and Paul Mullie.

Disc 4
A Day in the Life of Jamil Walker-Smith
(5:54 minutes) - Viewers follow Jamil Walker-Smith from his morning walk to the studio all the way until the last hour of filming for the episode, "Alliances." While it was fun to watch him basically give the fans a tour of his life on set, what I found to be the most entertaining was Min-Na's facial expressions when she was in the shots behind him. She is hilarious.

Transplant Day (5:09 minutes) - Patrick Gilmore, Alaina Huffman, Jamil Walker-Smith, and executive producer, Carl Binder talk about "surgery day." Huffman talks about her technical advisor and working with the prosthetics and organs. This is more of an in depth discussion than I expected, especially thanks to Michelle Lemieux and Celine Godeau from WCT Productions.

Sitting Down with Mike Dopud (3:37 minutes) - This is basically a brief character analysis of Mike Dopud's character (Varro), which also includes comments from writer/producer, Carl Binder, executive producer, Joseph Mallozzi. I'm not particularly al that connected to Varro outside of his relationship with Alaina Huffman's character, so this feature did not grab me. However, Varro fans will appreciate it!

Bringing the Bridge to Life (3:48 minutes) - Executive producer, Brad Wright and set decorator, Mark Davidson give viewers a brief LED 101 class which may interest some and may not interest others. So depending on your preference, this may be a musts see or skip.

Louis Ferreira vs. Colonel Young (4 minutes) -If you didn't know that Louis Ferreira was a clown on set, this feature will make you smile and laugh so, so much! This feature takes viewers on the set of various episodes, following Louis Ferreira and his crazy antics throughout. With Ferreira in the cast, every day must have been a joy on set! This is definitely a must see if you want to smile.

Disc 5
Pitches: A Journey of Friendship and Discovery
(25:41 minutes) - Patrick Gilmore and Peter Kelamis jokingly pitch a new story line for SGU. From writing to rehearsing and pitching to the execs, these guys do not give up. Alaina Huffman, Carl Binder, Lou Diamond Phillips, Joseph Mallozzi, Louis Ferreira, Brian J. Smith, Jennifer Spence, Julia Benson, Elyse Levesque, and Brad Wright also appear in this satire. Phillips takes off his pants! Or does he... watch to find out! You also don't want to miss the "We Be Jammin" montage.

Behind the Season 2 Finale: Gauntlet (9:34 minutes) - Viewers catch up with actors, Patrick Gilmore and Peter Kelamis yet again as they introduce the feature in which the cast and crew take a look back on memory lane and express their gratitude for this experience.

Own Stargate Universe: Season 2 on DVD today.

TV Review: Series Premiere of Wilfred

Photo Credit: Michael Becker / FX

Wilfred is a half-hour, live-action comedy about "Ryan," a young man struggling unsuccessfully to make his way in the world until he forms a unique friendship with "Wilfred," his neighbor’s canine pet. Everyone else sees Wilfred as just a dog, but Ryan sees a crude and somewhat surly, yet irrepressibly brave and honest, Australian bloke in a cheap dog suit. While leading him through a series of comedic and existential adventures, Wilfred the dog shows Ryan the man how to overcome his fears and joyfully embrace the unpredictability and insanity of the world around him.

Wilfred is based on the critically-acclaimed Australian series of the same title and was adapted for FX by David Zuckerman (Family Guy, American Dad, King of the Hill).

Having never seen the original Australian series, I can say that viewers of the original comedy will be very proud of the American adaptation. The team behind this production is so smart and so incredibly clever. Wilfred is hilarious! Having seen them, I can say that the writing for the first three episodes will have viewers rolling on the couch laughing hysterically. The writers do not hold back, so the fact that these actors can deliver these lines (and actions) with a straight face is beyond me. But wait, did I mention that this is a dark comedy? Yeah. In the first episode, Ryan attempts to kill himself, to no success, especially after going through a number of drafts for his suicide note. But when he meets his neighbor and her dog, his life is changed forever. While the world sees Wilfred as a dog, Ryan sees a man in a dog-suit. And this Wilfred loves to smoke weed. Needless to say, the two get themselves into some very adventurous situations. Ryan wants to impress Wilfred's owner while Wilfred wants an honest friendship with Ryan, and there's more that goes on but I do not want to spoil it. It is also wildly funny the situations that they get each other into. Now while Wilfred is pretty crude, every episode has a message (the first three main themes being happiness, trust, and fear) and every episode begins with an intellectual quote. So if you plan on sitting down for a half hour a mindless television, this is the wrong show. You'll laugh so hard until it hurts (especially if you get all of the puns) and after the fact you'll realize that you came out seeing, say, happiness in a different light. Bottom line, Wilfred is a hit! Wilfred is such a great show! I highly recommend that you turn to FX and watch the series premiere tonight at ten!

Guest stars for season one include: Ethan Suplee, Chris Klein, Ed Helms, Rashida Jones, Jane Kaczmarek, Nestor Carbonell, John Michael Higgins, Mary Steenburgen, Peter Stormare, George Coe, and Dwight Yoakam.

Wilfred premieres tonight at 10/9c on FX.

New Image From "Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation"

Set in new owner Bonnie’s bedroom, “Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation” features Woody (voice of Tom Hanks) and Buzz (voice of Tim Allen) and the rest of the favorite “Toy Story 3” toys as they create the ultimate Hawaiian vacation for Ken (voice of Michael Keaton) and Barbie (voice of Jodi Benson). It seems Ken badly miscalculated their travel arrangements, so the gang has to create a dream getaway in Bonnie’s Midwestern bedroom—in the middle of winter. “Hawaiian Vacation” also features the voices of Joan Cusack, Wallace Shawn, Don Rickles, Estelle Harris, Blake Clark, Bonnie Hunt, Timothy Dalton, Kristen Schaal, Jeff Garlin and John Ratzenberger.

While I have no desire to see Cars 2, this Toy Story short film appears exclusively with the computer-animated sequel... so, what am I going to do to see this short film come June 24, 2011? Will you head out to theaters June 24th just for this short?

Broadway Tour Review: Next to Normal

When Rent closed on Broadway, it did not take as long as I expected to find my new favorite original musical on Broadway. And then Next to Normal closed on Broadway. But this week, Broadway fans in the Philadelphia area are coming together to see the cast and crew of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning hit musical on tour and it is fantastic!

It was wonderful to see Alice Ripley again in her 2009 Tony Award winning role as Diana, a wife and mother with a mental illness who is struggling to find happiness in her life, herself, her mind - which is far from normal. Ripley played her part to the nines, even though it seemed as though this already husky voice was a bit under the weather. A line here and there was inaudible or flat which is why it seemed she could have been under the weather. But it worked because Diana seemed more down on herself than the first time I saw the musical. Whether that was due to Ripley's cold or due to character growth is anybody's guess, but it worked. Emma Hunton (Spring Awakening) is just as wonderful as original Broadway cast member, Jennifer Damiano. In fact, there were some instances when watching her, I thought I heard Damiano's voice. Now there's a unique tone to original Broadway cast member's Adam Chanler-Berat voice that makes me melt every time I hear him sing. So, Preston Sadleir had very big shoes to fill as Henry. It brings me great delight to share that Sadleir not only filled those shoes but molded them into such a colorful way that fits the story so well. What a talent. What a talent.

Curt Hansen (as Gabe) will never let me hear the song "I'm Alive" the same. He truly brought this song to life in a way that I had yet to hear (and see), so it is now one of my favorite numbers of the musical. Other favorite numbers that I enjoyed all too much opening night in Philadelphia were "I Am The One" as well as "Make Up Your Mind/Catch Me I'm Falling." The harmonies were off the chart incredible. The way that these singers play with the scale and the way that these actors deliver their lines, it is quite fascinating to see. While a drama, there is quite a bit of comedy, so to see how different actors portray certain lines and sing certain songs, it makes or break a number. And the entire cast made every number that much more memorable. Asa Somers (as Dan) was a delight to see. He took a less aggressive approach as Dan, which was refreshing to see. There were certain high notes that he struggled to hit but he brought every number home just as rock star, Jeremy Kushnier did as Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine. The casting was truly brilliant for this touring cast. The cast was honestly just as wonderful as the original... and that is not easy to do! The musicians were wonderful as well. Having seen Next to Normal in a partial view the first time, it was quite a thrill to see the musical from the center this time around where I could see not only all of the cast but all of the musicians, who are placed on the stage, within the house. In fact, because of the way that the house is set up on stage, nothing gets lost in translation from Broadway to the tour. So there are no excuses not to see this musical when it comes to your town. And the music is so good! Less than a handful of times did the music overpower the vocalists but for the most part, the two played hand in hand very well. More on the music in a bit.

Next to Normal is truly one of the most gripping family dramas I have ever seen. And the emotions are just as strong after the first viewing. In my first viewing of the musical on Broadway, tears would not stop pouring during the numbers, "How Could I Ever Forget," "Why Stay?," and "So Anyway." Having witnessed a friend experience events scaringly similar to Diana's since then, I approached the musical with brand new eyes this time around and was gripped to my seat with empathy that I thought I witnessed the first time around but really hadn't until now. There are so many messages to get out of this musical, but my favorites have to be those of self-reflection, sacrifice, and defining happiness. There is so much depth to this story, it has really earned the right to its own class for a Psychology major. The rockin' music by Tom Kitt (which will have you feeling electric) as well as the book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey alone will take listeners to an emotional level they have never been before. You can simply listen to the Next to Normal original Broadway cast recording to understand why the show was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2009. But you'll be doing yourself a great disservice by not catching the musical when it is in a town near you. Next to Normal is definitely worth taking the entire adult family to see. Walt Disney Pictures Releases John Carter One Sheet

From Academy Award–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”—a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

Cast: Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, Bryan Cranston, with Thomas Hayden Church and Willem Dafoe
Director: Andrew Stanton (WALL•E)
Producers: Jim Morris and Colin Wilson

This seems like a very gripping action packed adventure and the cast is quite an incredible group of talent, so I am definitely intrigued and cannot wait for a trailer to be released! Stay tuned for that coming soon.

John Carter hits theaters March 9, 2012. For more information, visit Facebook or Twitter.

ICYMI: Voice Over Actors Are Cool

As San Diego Comic Con is approaching, I wanted to briefly share a memory of a time when I didn't just go to panels at the con with big TV and film stars. I remember in 2005, I decided to go to a voice over panel just for fun and it was actually my favorite panel of the day! I still remember how much life there was from the panelists and how much genuine passion that the panelists had, even after working in voice over for so many years. Voice over acting is not as easy as it sounds, as I learned in the panel. You really have to be on your toes and this is a profession full of talent that truly does not get enough credit. So if you're heading to Comic Con this year, try to fit it in your schedule to sit in on a voice over related panel. You might even meet the voice behind a Disney Princess, Spongebob, or a number of other popular characters!

Also, be sure to check out my interviews with young actors, Dan Milano (Robot Chicken), Josh Keaton (The Spectacular Spider-Man) among others who have a lot of great insight into the profession, having done it for years.

And if you're interested in voice over acting, be sure to check out the Studio Center which has centers across the states to help up and coming voice talent hone their craft among other services such as video production and music production.

Interview: JoJo On Jumping Trains, Marvin's Room, Living in Los Angeles, & More

If you haven't been keeping up with JoJo since her first two albums, JoJo and The High Road released, you are missing out on the best mix tape of 2010, Can't Take That Away. Now a young woman with more life experience and more knowledge of not just music but the music business, JoJo is set to release her third album, Jumping Trains later this year.

JoJo's strength is truly underestimated. Over the past few years, JoJo has pushed through one great record label battle. Because of her persistence in standing up for her art, fans across the globe can now expect a new album in the coming months. As a longtime fan of hers (and I mean, I was heading out to my local mall when she made a Radio Disney appearance back in the day), I am thrilled to share my interview with JoJo in which she talks about her upcoming album, her "Marvin's Room" response song, Los Angeles, traveling, and much more. Check it out below:

Starting out with your most recent success, are you shocked at the response from the urban blogs of your “Marvin’s Room” cover?
I was completely shocked! It came to me so randomly. When I heard the song, I listened to it three times. My best guy friend said to me, "Jo, you have to listen to this song. You're going to love it." So I said okay and I hung up the phone to listen to it. In the car ride from the hotel to the airport, I wrote my take on it. I was obviously super inspired by Drake and his melodies and the whole vibe of the song. I was very nervous to play something so explicit but with no risk, there's no reward. So I wanted to take that chance in doing something that was honest and in your face and indicative of what's going on around me, being a young woman in my 20s.

When is the new album, Jumping Trains set to be released?
Since we're still mixing the album and choosing the title songs, there's a lot of people involved in the process so it doesn't go as quickly as you know, we'd want it to. But we're looking for a fall release date.

And what about the music video that you recently shot?
We shot a video for the buzz single, “The Other Chick.” We were ready to move forward with “The Other Chick” but I am the type of person who never stops recording. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe that's a bad thing (laughs) but anyway, we got to the studio and made a few records that the label flipped over. So we thought that maybe we should re-evaluate the plan and go with one of those tracks. I'm totally comfortable with that. All of these songs are my baby so I'm not necessarily attached to one more than the other. So our plan right now is to shoot another video and move forward, go to radio, and do all of that stuff for one of the new songs.

“The Other Chick” is perhaps the most honest that we’ve heard from you on this level. Did the decision to share such honest songwriting on this album come naturally or did you ever have any hesitations about sharing certain things?
Sometimes there's a hesitation but it's very therapeutic. It might be selfish because it might make the people that I am talking about feel uncomfortable but what are you going to do? I think that people connect to the truth and raw emotion. I wanted to be transparent. I wanted to say things that we all think in our head but don't know how to put into words and say. I strive to say things that might be bold or are a little off the edge... but I think we're all a little crazy at the end of the day. (laughs)

You mentioned earlier that you are constantly recording so what exactly is on the new album time line wise?
The majority of this body of work is from after the mix tape. One song that stood the test of time is in fact, "Jumping Trains." I recorded that song a significant amount of time ago but it applies even more today than when I first recorded it. I think that's the oldest record that lives on here but the rest of them are quite recent, mixed in with a few that just remained firm in our minds. I recorded about 100 songs. The goal was to take songs that we loved and replace them with songs that we loved even more. It's hard to let go of certain songs but what we've come up with, I think is a cohesive body of work.

Please do not let those songs go. 100 songs? We want to hear them!
I know, I know! I don't know what to do with them. (laughs)

Now your music has a common theme when you listen to "Leave (Get Out)" and then "Too Little Too Late" and more recently, "My Time is Money." I also love how you always touch upon inspiration like with "Keep On Keepin On" and "All I Want Is Everything" but what other subjects will you touch upon on the new album?
One of the themes that I explored on this album is independence... and making a name for yourself, being a strong young woman. I think one of the things that is most explored is being strong and vulnerable. In most of the songs, I walk that line of having my guard up and having an edgy exterior, you know, metaphorically having a razor blade under my tongue. But I'm still a young girl. I'm still sensitive, emotional, I care. It sounds kind of deep but that was my intention with each of these songs, to express that line that I think a lot of us walk.

And there's no place like Los Angeles so can you talk about the inspiration you've found since moving to LA as well as your favorite and least favorite aspects of the music community there?
That's a really great question. I've had the opportunity to travel the world from a young age and then of course, there's no place like home, there's no place like New England. But Los Angeles has certainly influenced this album. Jumping Trains is a bit inspired by my move from Boston to LA. It's given me the opportunity to grow, develop, and be around like minded people. I've also been around some really shady people. For the most part though, I've really gotten the chance to be around people that inspire me and be constantly in the studio jumping from session to session just learning and absorbing so much.

I've also had the opportunity to understand what the night life is like. It's important as an artist to look at the people dancing and moving, and seeing what the common thread is between all of the different genres of music that pull people in. What's great about LA is that it is a melting pot but there's a lot of people out here who are trying to do the same thing. So that's a double edge sword. It's a good thing and a bad thing. But there are people from all around the world here, so it's a great place to be inspired and be young. I am honestly having the time of my life here.

With your first two albums having more of a pop feel to them, do you still feel connected to that pop sound since you've moved to LA and recorded more of a colorful array of sounds for Jumping Trains?
I'm proud of what me and my team accomplished with those two albums but to be honest I do feel a bit of a disconnect. I was so young. I was just so excited to be in the studio and have those opportunities but I didn't know what it all meant. I don't think that it was purpose-driven. Based on the pop sound that was represented on the first two albums, this album is just a little more cut dry. This album is a pop record but it's pop with an anger management problem. It's infused pop. It's infused with all of the other things that I love like hip-hop, country, soul, and whatever else. Because I was able to really take my time with this, it's come out more eclectic and still very cohesive.

That's so interesting that you brought up country because I wanted to ask if we would get just a bit of that vibe on this album. Can you elaborate on that?
Yeah. One of my favorite songs that I recorded, "Paper Airplanes" was unfortunately leaked. But a lot of people are saying that it has a country feel in the sense of the melody and the songwriting. When I say that I'm inspired by country music, I really mean lyrically. I think that country songwriters are some of the most impressive. They are creative storytellers so I really got a hold on that inspiration.

In a recent interview, you talked about your collaborations for this project and mentioned Rodney Jerkins and The Messengers to name a few... but did you work with Ryan Leslie for the album or do you plan on working with him again?
I love Ryan Leslie! I am such a fan of his work. We worked together on my last album but we didn't work together for this album. Though I am certainly open to working with him again in the future.

Who would you say are your favorite artists under Interscope, the label that you are now under?
Certainly Lady Gaga and Gwen Stefani. The list goes on and on when you look at the roster. I think it is a really impressive place for females. Look at Fergie, Gwen, Nicole Scherzinger, and Lady Gaga.

And which of those is your number one dream to duet with?
I would say Gwen Stefani. She's the coolest woman on the planet. She exudes cool.

Now you've been very interactive with your fans on Myspace and Twitter. What's your favorite aspect of social media?
I love the ability to invite people into your world by sharing things so quickly, like what your listening to, what inspires you... I think you get to create an environment from your background picture to your profile picture to the way that you tweet and writing in ALL CAPS. You know what I mean? You're able to create an environment that gives people an inside into what your whole persona is.

So are you done with Tumblr? Are you going to create a new account?
Oh God, that was a nightmare! I don't know what's going on with that Tumblr. It was originally my Tumblr for a couple of months and then somehow it got hacked into. I haven't had control of it for months now. I feel a little violated and freaked out. So I think I'm really turned off now and I won't do it.

Back to Twitter then. I noticed you mentioned in one of your tweets that one of your goals was to buy an acoustic guitar. What’s the update on that?
I love your questions. Well, my update is that I did go to Guitar Center and I purchased an acoustic guitar. (laughs)

Nice. So what was the first song that you learned how to play on guitar?
When I was growing up, me and my dad would sit across from each other and he would play me chords. I think the first song that I ever learned how to play was "Margaritaville" which isn't quite appropriate but it's 3 chords, so I think that's why he taught it to me. (laughs)

Who are you listening to right now?
The artist that I've been listening to the most consistently for the past five years has been D'Angelo (laughs). Also, Bilal. His album is called, "1st Born Second." I love Cee Lo's album. I'm really in the neo soul vibe right now. I love Erykah Badu and Common. I'm a huge John Mayer fan, he's a constant in my life as well. I am always listening to him. Jill Scott. I am also really into Rascal Flatts. I know that's random but I really, really like their music.

As you were recently in New York for a Girls Who Rock Event, did you get the chance to see a Broadway show and are you interested in pursuing Broadway?
I didn't see any shows this time. The last show that I saw was In The Heights. Jordin Sparks was in it and it was so amazing. I love theatre. It takes a whole different mindset and work ethic to be on Broadway. Whenever people say that they've been on Broadway, I tip my hat to them because I know it's not easy. I would absolutely love to do it one day. I think it would be a great challenge, an incredible memory, and a way to further explore what it means to be a performer.

Lastly, aside from songwriting and singing, what else can we expect to see you do... perhaps some more acting?
I would love to! Though I've been so excited and obsessed with this upcoming album that I haven't even opened my mind up to pursing more films. But it's certainly a passion of mine so I can't wait to do more acting in the future. I also want to continue my education and get a degree. I'm really interested in sociology. Specifically, I want to study cultural anthropology and musicology. I'm really interested in seeing what defines cultures and how music plays a part in that. I would also like to travel and see more of the world, just soak up culture and learn as much as I can. I'm also a foodie! I would love to explore and try different delicacies. I'm all about it!

Stay tuned for JoJo's album, Jumping Trains this fall.
