Thursday Trails #1

New year, new feature (feel free to participate)! I’ve just created…
Thursday Trails!

Each week, I will post a new Thursday Trails topic here at Hollywood the Write Way that will act as a guide to a trail. Update: This feature will take place max. once a month, min. once per season. You can also see the bottom of this post for future topics.

The goal is to list 1-3 songs or albums (includes scores and soundtracks), 1-3 TV shows or specific episodes, and 1-3 movies (includes major motion pictures, TV movies, indie movies, and documentaries) that will lead to 1-3 book recommendations. The goal is to get people to expand their horizons and see that there are great TV shows, movies, music, and of course books out there. There’s something for everyone in every medium.

If you participate, you can mix & match if you aren’t able to find matches for a certain area or just pick one area to focus on. For example, if you don’t watch a lot of TV, you can pick more music or movie choices but there must be at least 3 recommendations in the entire post that lead to your book(s) of choice. You also do not have to link everything up or include a synopsis for everything. Images though are highly recommended.

If you participate, all I ask is that you link back to Hollywood the Write Way on your Thursday Trails post AND comment on my TT post that week.

Here is today’s topic: Love That is Hard to Find/Hold On To

TV

Jericho
iTunes, Amazon, Netflix Streaming

Jericho is a drama about what happens when a nuclear mushroom cloud suddenly appears on the horizon, plunging the residents of a small, peaceful Kansas town into chaos, leaving them completely isolated and wondering if they’re the only Americans left alive. But in this time of crisis, as sensible people become paranoid, personal agendas take over and well-kept secrets threaten to be revealed, some people will find an inner strength they never knew they had and the most unlikely heroes will emerge.

Lost Girl
iTunes, Amazon, Netflix Streaming

“Lost Girl” stars supernatural seductress Bo (played by Anna Silk, “The Ghost Whisperer”), a Succubus (a powerful female entity in folklore) who feeds off sexual energy. Raised by human parents, Bo had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl next door — until she “drained” her first boyfriend to death.

Bo has since hit the road alone and afraid. She discovers she is one of the Fae, creatures of legend and folklore, who pass as humans while feeding off them in secret, as they have for millennia. She is faced with choosing an allegiance between the Dark or Light Fae clans. Bo decides to take the middle path between humans and the Fae while embarking on a personal mission to unlock the secrets of her origin, protecting humans along the way.

Dollhouse
iTunes, Amazon, Netflix Streaming

Echo (Eliza Dushku) is an “Active,” a member of a highly illegal and underground group who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Confined to a secret facility known as the “Dollhouse,” Echo and the other Actives including Sierra and Victor carry out engagements assigned by Adelle, one of the Dollhouse leaders. The engagements cater to the wealthy, powerful, and connected, and require the Actives to immerse themselves in all manner of scenarios — romantic, criminal, uplifting, dangerous, comical, and the occasional “pro bono” good deed. After each scenario, Echo, always under the watchful eye of her handler Boyd, returns to the mysterious Dollhouse where her thoughts, feelings, and experiences are erased by Topher, the Dollhouse’s genius programmer. Echo enters the next scenario with no memory of before. Or does she?

Movies

Contagion
Netflix

Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (‘Traffic’) creates a “germophobe’s nightmare” (Variety) in this harrowing thriller about the outbreak of a deadly virus. Told from the perspective of a variety of characters close to the disease-the first victim’s husband, a CDC agent, a World Health Organization investigator, and various experts, doctors and scientists-the film follows their desperate race to stop the epidemic before it grows completely out of control.

The all-star cast includes Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Bryan Cranston, Jennifer Ehle and Sanaa Lathan. Directed by Steven Soderbergh; written by Scott Z. Burns.

TiMER
Netflix Streaming

What if a clock could count down to the moment you meet your soul mate? In this alternate version of present day Los Angeles, a revolutionary device called the TiMER fulfills this very fantasy. For a reasonable installation fee and a moderate monthly charge, a TiMER is implanted in the wrist and promises to accurately display the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds until the owner’s date with destiny. However, things aren’t so easy for Oona O’Leary (EMMA CAULFIELD, Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Oona faces the rare dilemma of a blank TiMER; her soul mate—whoever and wherever he is—doesn’t have a TiMER.

(500) Days of Summer
Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, Netflix

This is a story of a young man’s no-holds-barred love affair. Tom still believes in the notion of a transforming, cosmically destined, lightning-strikes-once kind of love. Summer, the girl, doesn’t. But that doesn’t stop Tom from going after her, again and again, like a modern Don Quixote. Suddenly, Tom is in love not just with a lovely, witty, intelligent woman but with the very idea of Summer, the very idea of a love that still has the power to shock the heart and stop the world.

Novel

Delirium by Lauren Oliver
Goodreads

Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing.

They didn’t understand that once love — the deliria — blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the government demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.

But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love.

  1. Hi Melody,

I have put Thursday Trails on my to-do list, although I think it may blow my mind trying to link everything together. I'm thinking that I might start from the book and build my trail from there…

  2. Hi Belinda!

Thanks so much! You totally DO NOT have to link everything up! You don't have to include the synopsis of each either! The only thing that is highly recommended are the images. Looking forward to your trail! 🙂
