Check out last week’s review here.

So we left off in part one of the season 8 premiere with host McKenzie Westmore telling the artists that they had to create not two but three designs, the third dealing with monkeys. Because the first two aliens didn’t crash on earth but a planet led by primates who aren’t happy about the crash landing. The challenge? Create a tyrannical primate which will impress guest judge and legend, Rick Baker (Planet of the Apes).

The choices for inspiration? Squirrel Monkey, Brown Lemur, White Faced Capuchin, Mandrill, and Olive Baboon. Team Laure chose the Squirrel Monkey. Team Anthony chose the Mandrill. I knew someone was going to pick the Mandrill. I mean, come on. How could you not? And finally, Team Rayce chose the White Faced Capuchin.

Since the challenge was so daunting, they got an extra day to complete it which is awesome. I wonder how many more olive branches will be extended to them throughout the season. Anyway, I of course was anticipating all of Team Laura’s looks but since Team Anthony took the Mandrill, I was really looking forward to seeing their Mandrill inspired creation.

As for inside the lab, Kelly on Team Anthony seemed to be having some pacing issues. At last looks, I was really worried about Ben who has a ton of experience but ended up without a signature look as part of the creations this week. On the stage? I loved Team Anthony’s looks! They did a really great job with the Mandrill and the aliens but especially the Mandrill. Team Rayce’s aliens were really off putting which I loved and their monkey was dynamite. Team Laura had great aliens but the monkey was a let down for me which is not at all what I was expecting!

The judges? They loved Team Rayce who was the top team. Yeah, I think it’s safe to say Team Rayce really was the best team this week so that was no surprise. The winner from Team Rayce was Logan. Congrats, Logan!

Finally, they weren’t a fan of one of the aliens from Team Anthony and the primate from Team Laura – as expected… that primate did not work at all. Really disappointing. It ended up that Kelly, Gregory, and Ben were on the bottom this week and I was hoping with everything that Ben wouldn’t get eliminated. Thankfully, he didn’t get the boot.

I thought Kelly was going to get eliminated but it turned out to be Gregory. I didn’t find Gregory particularly memorable (though it’s hard to be compelled by all of the artists in 2 episodes) so I wasn’t too bummed by his elimination but I do hope this isn’t the last we see of his work! What do you think?

Stay tuned for Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) to guest judge on the third episode, “Let the Games Begin” next week!

Face Off airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on Syfy.
