What to Watch This Weekend: Netflix Edition #6

Each weekend, I recommend a movie, documentary, and TV series that I found through Netflix or started watching because it was conveniently on Netflix and I had been meaning to get to that movie/documentary/TV show for some time. If you have any recommendations, feel free to leave a comment!

Movie

Another Earth

After a strange Earth-like planet is discovered, astrophysics student Rhoda accidentally slams her car into the vehicle of John, killing his family. In time, Rhoda and John begin an unlikely romance, but Rhoda begins to wonder about the other planet.

The pacing of this movie is slow and there’s a lot more that could have been explored but I accepted the movie for what it was after the ending that it had. Loved the ending. Is there going to be a sequel? Is the ending where you think the movie should have taken off instead of conclude at? What are your thoughts?

Documentary

Small Voices: The Stories of Cambodia’s Children

A revealing look at the difficult challenges street children in Cambodia face every day, this documentary chronicles the stories of Charam, Leakhena, Meng Ly, Layseng and Hov Nhagn, five youngsters struggling to overcome their illiteracy and poverty. This emotional tale of heartbreak and hope profiles how one local shelter, the Cambodian Children’s Fund, works hard to help a population the rest of the country ignores.

TV

Hart of Dixie

New Yorker Zoe Hart’s dreams didn’t involve patching up the locals in a tiny town in the Deep South, yet that’s exactly where the fast-talking city girl finds herself when she ends up inheriting a medical practice in Bluebell, Ala.

I was so excited when it was first announced that Rachel Bilson was coming back to the small screen. Then we all learned what the show, Hart of Dixie was about and it didn’t seem very interesting but I told myself I’d give it a shot. Then promos started to air and I was really turned off by the whole show, so I decided not to watch the Pilot. One day last fall, the promos for the first few episodes of season two were practically calling my name, so I decided to check Netflix and sure enough, the entire first season was streaming. Best decision I ever made! I usually watch the Pilot episodes of every show I am interested in but sometimes, I don’t. I’m so mad I let the promos get to me on this one! I hate when promos don’t capture the heart of a show and that’s what happened with the marketing campaign of the first season in my opinion. I am fully on board with Hart of Dixie and cannot wait for season 2 to stream on Netflix (or Hulu or come out on Blu-ray, whichever comes first) so I can catch up on a nice summer day before season 3!
